if you are looking for something to do tomorrow in nyc! i am hosting a nature drawing and writing class! it will be extremely fun!! buy tickets here!! 🦉🧪 www.caveat.nyc/events/pigeo...

eastern red-backed salamanders are the most abundant animal in the eastern forest by total mass, yet they're largely absent from some of nyc's forests. this post, the first of three examining salamanders in nyc, explains why! 🧪 open.substack.com/pub/ryanmand...

NYC friends I'm going to be doing the hard sell on each and every one of you for this AMAZING new book by @ryanfm.bsky.social so you might as well just buy it right now. I love the nature in this city and it could have no better champion than Ryan! 🏙️🌿🪶🦋🦎🐸🌳🐜🍄🏙️

If you’re like me and your favorite things are nature and New York City, I’ve got the book for you. It’s informative, funny, and has these fantastic illustrations. Congrats to @ryanfm.bsky.social!

Just ran into a bird tour (that apparently turns into a drag show later) for @ryanfm.bsky.social’s new book, and I asked someone about it and they told me to look it up on Bluesky!

Look: A new nature book by the wonderful @ryanfm.bsky.social called WILD NYC! Ryan is a truly gifted naturalist and writer whose turns of phrase AND nature sightings both make me jealous quite often, so you will want this book. bookshop.org/p/books/wild...

Incredibly stoked for @ryanfm.bsky.social's book to be out, with illustrations from @chelseabeck.bsky.social. Epic team.

my book is out!!!!! yes!!!! thanks everyone for the support and i hope y'all like it. if this is the first you're hearing about it, it's a nyc guide called wild nyc. if you want to check it out, link in replies. below that, i'll also put an edited excerpt that's in my newsletter. 🧪🦉🪶

Hey! Check out @ryanfm.bsky.social's new book!! I love the cover!! 🧪🦉 bookshop.org/p/books/wild...

a thing that actually feels kinda unique to new york city is the money laundering front that also just serves incredible food. uninhibited by the need to turn a profit the chef just does whatever they want and the results are often spectacular. only in ny baby

hello! my book WILD NYC releases in SIX DAYS and I have some really fun events scheduled - please consider joining me if you're in nyc! the biggest one: we're hosting an irreverent writing and drawing class at caveat! may 3, 1:30-3, tickets $15 available here. 🧪🦉 www.caveat.nyc/events/pigeo...

back from a 5 hour red eye flight after several days of early mornings sitting on the floor with my spouse who just pointed at the cat and said "i was just thinking about how existentially everyone in the world is just a girl"

in honor of april fools i did a quick little post about a very foolish bird 🧪🪶 open.substack.com/pub/ryanmand...

a cattle egret (rare in nyc) is at the cemetery near my apartment but it's really skittish and flushes quickly when people get too close. well, today i was there looking at ducks when the egret out of nowhere plopped down in front of me to pick bugs off of a dead snapping turtle 🪶🦉🧪

my favorite bird pictures are utterly terrible ones that are somehow still diagnostic. a good birder can take a good picture... but a great birder can snap a terrible iphone photo that still manages to capture the essence of a bird 🦉🪶🧪

My mom just used a Canadianism I've somehow never heard before and it's the best phrase ever created

a tik tok-er with a tiny microphone gestures at me on the street. "hey buddy what are you listening to?" before i can answer the horrible scream of the barn owl blasts out of my headphones on full volume, destroying his microphone instantly

i know this sounds insane but it has worked for me before. last year i heard a cartoony noise in the mountains and told the guide i heard an antshrike and he said there weren't expected antshrikes there. we looked and it was a uniform antshrike, his first for the eastern andes where it's uncommon 🪶🧪

tropical birdsong is really hard because like 50% of the birds just make weird trills and rolls. so you gotta go by voice. foliage gleaners sound annoyed. antshrikes are like cartoon characters. antpittas either sound tired or like they'd be very nice to you. flycatchers want you dead 🪶🦉🧪

for my next newsletter post: a fun essay on how to navigate a hobby (and maybe a world) where confidence and experience aren’t correlated 🧪🪶. ryanmandelbirder.substack.com/p/the-power-...

staring at this pic from today and mumbling “spring is so back” over and over again #birds

the most abundant vertebrate in north america is actually really difficult to see in brooklyn, reliable only from greenwood cemetery (and actress lili taylor's backyard, according to inaturalist). i've been unsuccessfully flipping logs every time i visit the cemetery and finally found one!

My goal for today is to see a lance-tailed manakin. I've heard them many times this week but haven't managed so much as a glimpse.

all daylight savings time woes would be removed by eliminating DST and mandating that workdays end at 4pm

saw a pretty cool bird from my apartment today: a swainson's hawk, who has been returning annually to the exact same brooklyn recycling facility for the past three winters 🦉🪶🧪

after all why not? why shouldn't i wear my new pants for a 7th day in a row?

i love minnesotans 🦉🧪🪶
