How much will global warming 'cost' global GDP. A range of assessments nicely laid out in this table. Source: cepr.org/voxeu/column...

Name this band

It's happening... they selected one of the 3 bids, informed them YESTERDAY, and are announcing plans for (Canada's FIRST) high-speed rail line, this morning. Now, will it actually see the light of day? Not the first time a high-speed rail project has been "announced"...

It’s like they’re actively trying to make the UNFCCC even more of a joke than it is

Why it's important how we define Net Zero👇The argument that "warming stops when we reach Net Zero" assumes residual land & ocean CO2 uptake brings down CO2 ppm after Net Zero. IF instead we consider those residual removals as "offsets" for Net Zero, warming will continue!

Despite Ottawa Winters warming by about 2°C over the last half Century, the average amount of SNOW per year is virtually unchanged. One explanation: A reduction in the number of days during which falling precipitation will be snow, and an increase in the amount of precipitation during that time🤷🏻‍♂️

Sad. This empty lot used to be a Greyhound bus station back in the days when intercity coach bus services were much more available in this country.

Each year, Arctic Sea Ice Extent reaches a low point in September. But over the last 15 years or so, the September minimum extent *appears* to have plateaued... 🧵Thread on this why this is happening, and how it's hiding catastrophic changes...

My latest…

Another great synopsis by Bob Berwyn. One weird thing about the debate between “it’s worse than we thought” and “the truth is bad enough” is the latter’s “truth” is pretty much in line with the former’s vision of what is expected to be “worse”😬

During La Niña no less…

Ten years ago Greta was… 11 years old🥴

❗️Highest temperature ever recorded this early in the year across the Northern Hemisphere.

Finally *officially* cross-appointed with the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at uOttawa (I'm listed on the faculty webpage now so it must be official😅). Happy to supervise incoming grad students there too!

Great video clip breaking down how climate denier talking points about wind power ended up in Taylor Sheridan’s new show Landman youtu.be/wBC_bug5DIQ?... ht @thedisproof.bsky.social

Oh hey! The chapter I wrote with @ryankatzrosene.bsky.social on "Teaching Students about the Environment in an IR Theory Course" is out! We've included some great resources + talked through teaching environment for folks who might have little background link.springer.com/chapter/10.1...

2025: Warmest January globally... 4th warmest across Canada... but in Ottawa it was the 52nd Warmest over the last 142 years.

Just showed the documentary film version of Oreskes' book to one of my classes. It continues to serve as one of the most important socio-political analyses of the Century, explaining how we got to where we are today (including how we ended up with a climate denier US President).

Meanwhile, over on the other site...🥴

Losses from disasters in Canada are increasing, on average… *even when levelling for GDP growth*

It's like we're trying to take the *worst* aspects of SSPs 3, 4, and 5 and combine them to form SSP345-8.5☠️

More of this!👇

The value of catastrophic losses in Canada is trending up. So is GDP. Altogether, losses as a percentage of annual GDP is trending up too.

New paper says we're within 20yrs of breaching 1.5C... TBH, while statistically this may be the case, it's worth noting that over the last 50 years the longest a record-hottest year has maintained that record is 6 years. Further, rate of warming is faster now than 50 years ago.
