Spinch approves of kind words from @thehornbook.bsky.social, @publisherswkly.bsky.social, and Kirkus about MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN.

Grateful for @clairewillett.bsky.social covering these incredibly depressing & infuriating developments.

I'm so honored to have been recognized by the Oregon Young Adult Network for work for and with teens! oyanpeeps.wordpress.com/2025/04/30/c...

What Maggie said. I just donated to @flfreedomread.bsky.social, hope you will too & help spread the word:

Here's the latest from the IMLS, including what you should be preparing for in the library world right now: buttondown.com/wellsourced/...

The latest from Kelly Jensen, who's been doing invaluable work tracking censorship for years. Follow her if you're not already!

No community is immune from censorship. That's why we ALL must #UniteAgainstBookBans. You have the tools to make a difference. Need a plan to take action? Use our toolkit to organize your community: uniteagainstbookbans.org/toolkit/

Head’s up: Make sure you’re registered to vote in time for Oregon school board elections! sos.oregon.gov/voting

Today, SCOTUS hears a case on whether hearing a story read about a child who has a gay uncle constitutes a violation of freedom of religion. Why should we care? Because public education belongs to all of us, and all means all. Kids with LGBTQ+ families are part of the all.

Cool new resource alert! "The Graphic Novel Library exists to break down barriers for librarians and educators, and to support robust graphic novel and comics collections in libraries and classrooms." www.graphicnovellibrary.org

New history comic! Artist @samnakahira.bsky.social created this comic about the history of the Japanese American community in LA's Crenshaw neighborhood. Read up! www.crucialcomix.com/comic/it-was...

Just finished reading THE CARTOONISTS CLUB by @goraina.bsky.social & @scottmccloud.bsky.social and it’s a delight: sweet, informative, inclusive. Great for young readers and anyone else who wants to make comics or just learn more about them. There's a fun activity kit too:

Random throwback album rec: Grace in Gravity (The Story, 1991). Includes songs inspired by Far Side comics and an e.e. cummings poem. I was introduced to the band via a track ("The Alarm Is On Love") on an actual mix tape.

It's always slightly cognitively dissonant to hear music (in this case, Donna Summer's "Let's Dance") in a context wildly different from its original intended milieu; in 1978, did she or anyone think it'd be playing in a PDX coffeeshop in 2025? Where, to be clear, no one is in fact dancing.

Self-stowed Spinch.

I'm always a fan of @ouropinions.bsky.social, but this ep about fascism & book bans is particularly great. I appreciate the thoughtful consideration of why satire isn't always the best tool for resistance, & the info about @authorsabb.bsky.social: ouropinionsarecorrect.libsyn.com/encore-episo...

This is tonight! There will be cordials!

My first two YA books are in here too; they got the English *and* German editions of my first. Also the first article I published in an academic journal, which was, ironically, about librarians incorporating new technologies into reference work.

Friday 3/21 at 7 pm at @powells.bsky.social Cedar Hills, I'll be in conversation with @kylelukoff.bsky.social about MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN and his latest, A WORLD WORTH SAVING. Join us!

Today's the grand (re)opening of Always Here Books and I'll be hanging out there from 4PM until...?? Come celebrate this swell queer & trans worker-owned bookstore in their excellent new space! www.alwaysherebooks.com

Many authors are getting their books — their art — banned by people who know nothing about the purpose of art, people who care nothing about the meaning of novels. I guarantee you none of these authors believe getting banned is a badge of honor. It’s an insult, every time.

Latest research reading: BETTER ANGEL by Richard Meeker, a 1933 gay coming of age novel. Yes, really. Glad to have gotten hold of a used paperback of the 1987 Alyson Publications reissue.

I'm reading YOU DIDN'T HEAR THIS FROM ME by @mckinneykelsey.bsky.social, & think it pairs well with STORIES ARE WEAPONS by @annaleen.bsky.social; different lenses, but both investigating stories, truth, persuasion, how information travels, how narratives can be manipulated. Strongly recommend both!

Today!

Tomorrow!

"A budget is a moral document." Whether or not you're in the arts and/or nonprofits, read:

Hoping you both enjoy it! Please thank Tato for excellent modeling.

PDX-area friends, join me on Sunday 2/23 at 2 pm at A Children's Place Bookstore for a reading and Q&A about my new queer middle-grade novel, MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN! There will be chocolate cherry cordials, for reasons.

A Friday reminder that having your book banned doesn't sell books. Only THE MOST banned books see support, and I assure you all those creators would prefer their books were NOT banned instead. There's no silver lining. It's just the knowledge that ppl hate you! Ok have a good weekend

This is where you go to tell the National Park Service to restore the word "transgender" in its entry on the Stonewall monument. (Scroll down.)

Embrace graphic novels 1/ ?

Already know I'll be rereading and pondering this for a While.

I always appreciate Charlie Jane's newsletter, & was especially glad to read her reflecting about the value of curiosity:

This time with (even more) feeling, and also with book details! MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN is out today: bookshop.org/p/books/moun...

Sara and I started working on Mountain Upside Down well before the current crisis, of course, but it is a book that I’ve thought about daily in recent weeks. Get yourself to a library or an indie and grab a copy. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741912/mountain-upside-down-by-sara-ryan/
