Today!

Tomorrow!

"A budget is a moral document." Whether or not you're in the arts and/or nonprofits, read:

Hoping you both enjoy it! Please thank Tato for excellent modeling.

PDX-area friends, join me on Sunday 2/23 at 2 pm at A Children's Place Bookstore for a reading and Q&A about my new queer middle-grade novel, MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN! There will be chocolate cherry cordials, for reasons.

A Friday reminder that having your book banned doesn't sell books. Only THE MOST banned books see support, and I assure you all those creators would prefer their books were NOT banned instead. There's no silver lining. It's just the knowledge that ppl hate you! Ok have a good weekend

This is where you go to tell the National Park Service to restore the word "transgender" in its entry on the Stonewall monument. (Scroll down.)

Embrace graphic novels 1/ ?

Already know I'll be rereading and pondering this for a While.

I always appreciate Charlie Jane's newsletter, & was especially glad to read her reflecting about the value of curiosity:

This time with (even more) feeling, and also with book details! MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN is out today: bookshop.org/p/books/moun...

Sara and I started working on Mountain Upside Down well before the current crisis, of course, but it is a book that I’ve thought about daily in recent weeks. Get yourself to a library or an indie and grab a copy. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741912/mountain-upside-down-by-sara-ryan/

My middle-grade debut MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN is out today! Some parts are funny. Some parts are sad. A critique partner asked on seeing early pages; “Is EVERYONE in this book gay?” Mostly, yes. Of course, I'm very much feeling this meme...

Settling in for a writing session at a new-to-me spot that reminds me of old(er) Portland, grateful for spaces like this.

Novel research + distraction: I've been looking for photos of boxcar interiors in the 1930s. I like that in this 1937 Arthur Rothstein photo, you can see warnings: Dangerous to Leave Doors Open. Close or Hook Back. Clean Thresholds Before Closing Doors. www.loc.gov/item/2017775...

How lovely to be scrolling through @autostraddle.bsky.social's Most Anticipated Queer Books for February list, avidly noting titles to place holds on and buy, and see my book cover in excellent company! www.autostraddle.com/the-most-ant...

Now more than ever.

If you want a distraction from...all the things, may I commend to your attention Hilobrow's MacGyver Your Enthusiasm series, analyzing and celebrating favorite TV shows from the 1980s. I wrote about Remington Steele: www.hilobrow.com/2025/02/06/m...

An important thread.

Really appreciate this essay from Renee Watson. She's talking specifically about children and grief, but learning how to make space for grief is important no matter what age you are: www.romper.com/life/how-to-...

If you have a #KidLit book launching Feb.3-9, reply with book cover (use alt text), title, author & illustrator, publisher, launch date, link where people can find more info. Pls add good karma to universe by helping to boost! It's a tough time to be launching books. #KidLitLaunches #Edusky More 👇

For all the cisgender people looking for an instruction manual on what to do next, here you go: medium.com/@sbearbergma... (From the inimitable @sbearbergman.bsky.social )

Authors, if you see this, it’s a sign to post the first line of your book. "If you think about it a certain way, it should be easy to tell the person who's been your best friend since third grade that you like her." MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN, February 2025 bookshop.org/p/books/moun...

Make room on your bookshelves for Louise Erdrich’s BIRCHBARK HOUSE series! It offers a critical counterpoint to Wilder’s books, which may find renewed interest with Netflix’s "Little House on the Prairie" reboot. #kidlit

I tore through Nico Lang's AMERICAN TEENAGER. Grateful to them for writing it, and to the youth & their families who let Lang so deeply into their lives. Also love the jacket art by Pace Taylor. Read this thoughtful Ms. Magazine interview with Lang, then read the book: msmagazine.com/2024/10/04/n...

Indeed. Next month, in fact: bookshop.org/p/books/moun...

What Andrew says.

Btw Authors Against Book Bans ( @authorsabb.bsky.social ) might seem kid lit driven bc so many challenges are happening in schools, but I think every author should consider joining. Book bans are bad for everyone. www.authorsagainstbookbans.com

This weekend #ReadFreely with @authorsabb.bsky.social & your local indie bookstore! I picked up AMERICAN TEENAGER: how trans kids are surviving hate and finding joy in a turbulent era, by Nico Lang, and UNSUITABLE: a history of lesbian fashion, by Eleanor Medhurst.

This is more important now than ever. If I already know what an article is going to say, I *don't read it*. No point in being reminded of what I already know in ways that are designed to freak me out and prevent me from taking in any actual new info.

More true now than ever. In the three years since I wrote this, every aspect of the banning crisis has become more dire for authors, librarians, teachers, and readers. "Bans sell books!" ranks with "It's so cold! Climate change isn't real!" among things only the most ignorant assholes say.

If you've seen today's Dept. of Education announcement calling book bans a "hoax," please do not despair. Numerous organizations across the U.S. are working hard to preserve the #freedomtoread. Authors & illustrators, please join us (no fees! no fundraising!) at www.authorsagainstbookbans.com/.

I so appreciated reading this. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025... - thank you Nikki
