Depending on which game, the best way to start understanding things is by learning frame data and how a match is supposed to flow. Besides just general spacing, being able to see the attacks and realize when you can punish and with which button makes a huge difference.

Yeah, I've done that for other character ideas. I just then never use characters, or I get in a state of self-doubt thinking people will like those characters more than "me" and end up not doing it...
