NEW VIDEO: As Republicans work on betraying the American people, Democrats are finding a path forward. Former Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill and I sit down to discuss Elon Musk’s failure at DOGE, Trump’s obsession with tariffs, and the future of the Democratic Party. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCxm...

Now that Trump has blasted Leonard Leo, don't let the right wing sanitize the Federalist Society. Its members have been supporting voter suppression for years, its judges are among the hardest on voters. What will come from Trump now will be far worse, but do not judge democracy on a curve.

Vought gets a little salty after Dana Bash plays the clip of him saying that he wants federal bureaucrats to be "in trauma," telling her "you cherrypicked the quote" (she literally just played the clip)

End the interview right there

@jamestalarico.bsky.social: "The Christians in Congress should be feeding the hungry, but they're cutting food stamps. They should be healing the sick, but they are cutting Medicaid. They should be standing up to the billionaire class, but instead they're cutting their taxes."

The cost to repair D.C. streets after Trump's upcoming military parade could cost as much as $16 million, according to U.S. military officials.

As an indication of the upside-down we are now living in, a Ukrainian friend who lives in Kyiv under the daily threat of aerial bombardment reached out to me today: “Are you doing OK? I’ve been following the news about American universities and it sounds bad.” 🙃

Remember when Donald Trump got caught with all sorts of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago after saying he didn't have anything, and then he got indicted but the judge slow walked the case to death? Yup. He did that.

its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....

Raskin: This is a gangster state. This is not basically a legitimate government that is sometimes doing corrupt things. This is an essentially corrupt enterprise. It's like watching The Sopranos. Every day, they get up and they try to figure out how to plunder and pillage the people

My heart so aches. What unfathomable pain they endured. “‘It was the worst food I've ever had at a Trump golf course,’ Nicholas Pinto, … who poured around $300,000 into Trump's coin, told Wired of the entree, a surf-and-turf dish that included halibut and filet mignon.” apple.news/AW1ON4_itRY-...

the return of the know-nothings

“.. the most brazen use of government office in American history, perhaps eclipsing even Teapot Dome, Watergate .. “.. ‘I’ve been watching and writing about corruption for 50 years, and my head is still spinning’ ..” @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/05/25/u...

The Supreme Court is contending with many of Trump’s policies using the “emergency docket,” which fast tracks cases to SCOTUS. @profmmurray.bsky.social says the process lacks transparency, and @dahlialithwick.bsky.social says it’s the “the worst possible way” to show legitimacy. #Velshi

We make jokes about this sometimes because it’s laughable. But when journalists try to make sense of the nonsensical, rational out of the irrational, and coherence out of the incoherence, they affirmatively do the public interest great harm.

“The judges are not ‘deranged,’ Madam Attorney General.” @judgeluttig.bsky.social has a message for Pam Bondi. And he warns that Trump’s war on the judiciary could end in catastrophe for the rule of law. #Velshi

Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.

Golden Dome is a missile defense fantasy so staggeringly unworkable it makes Fyre Festival look like a military success. It will never work. It will never be built. But Elon Musk and defense companies will make billions.

Angie Craig: "I have no idea why we think it's a good idea to repeal a tax on silencers when we are going to feed fewer children in our country as a result of this. It's a moral damn failure is what it is."

Read this please, and somebody send it to Clarence. Thanks!

Let’s break this down—because the gaslighting is wild: 📌Oct 2022 – Biden signs EO to cut drug prices 📌Jan 2025 – Trump takes office and kills Biden’s EO to cut drug prices 📌May 2025 – Trump signs his own EO to lower drug prices Trump canceled Biden’s plan then brought it back w/his name on it.

I don’t know if it is “stupid” to decline a gift from a foreign government, but it is ethically and constitutionally required. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/12/u...

Chris Murphy: "Let's be clear what this trip is all about. This is President Trump's corruption tour of the Middle East. He is going to the gulf to collect tribute. What's happening here is an extraordinary level of corruption. We shouldn't pretend this is business as usual."

So that all can read, I am gifting today’s NYT piece on the lawless presidency of the 45th President of the United States. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/28/o...

Oh wow. Note: This response (below, which is real) to Trump’s tweet depicting himself as pope is from the New York State Catholic Bishops, who represent the collective bishops of the state. Among them is Cardinal Dolan of NYC, who Trump appointed to his new religious liberty commission this week.

Update: the Trump administration has proposed cutting the National Park System by $900 million, about one third of its budget.

Today, May 1, is Law Day. For D.C.Bar members, one small but important way to take a stand in support of the rule of law is to support Diane Seltzer for D.C. Bar President. We must defeat her opponent Brad Bondi, brother of the current U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. Please vote here: www.dcbar.org

Gutsy, gutsy move here.

The most revolting Oval Office presser since Feb. 28 (the Zelensky one). Even just hitting a few of the lowlights of this will leave you sickened and dismayed. BUT it's also clarifying. Anyone who has been talking about "the road to authoritarianism" can stop that now. The road is behind us.

We often look back on the seminal moments in our history and wonder "What would I have done?" This is our moment. This is our time. We must stand up. We must speak out. We must do everything we can to stop a President who has every intention of destroying our democracy.

In a scathing dissent, Ketanji Brown Jackson slammed the court's ruling made under the “shadows of our emergency docket." “Make no mistake: We are just as wrong now as we have been in the past, with similarly devastating consequences. It just seems we are now less willing to face it,” she wrote.
