Learning losses were huge during the pandemic. Using time diaries, Charlene Kalenkoski and I found that teenagers spent on average half an hour less time in class during the first year when many were attending class virtually. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

W/ demise of NCES, I hope that educ journal editors & reviewers realize that asking authors who use restricted data to run 1 more robustness check, include 1 more adjustment variable, or explore 1 more interaction is functionally equivalent to squashing paper entirely. W/ massive effects on careers.

Share with US students who had their offers of admission withdrawn for PhD programs: Apply to Canada. Check out Canadian professors, and contact us. Our system works differently here, and we are all still, technically, able to accept students for Fall 2025.

Excited to be attending the NBER-CRIW conference on the Changing Nature of Work this morning with my favorite research topic on the program: “work from home”. You can tune in on YouTube www.nber.org/conferences/...

Perhaps the hardest idea to truly understand about trade is that it is fundamentally about cooperation, not competition. I trade goods with foreigners for the same reason I trade chores with my partner: If we reallocate tasks in just the right way, we’ll both be better off.

One reason I wish more humanities-oriented people would engage with AI is that models are writers, trained on words, producing words. There are strengths & weaknesses in the models that can only be seen if you engage deeply with them as writers. They do not show up in coding benchmarks or tests.

Unbelievable news. Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers. New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We streamlined six new DID-like estimators and created this tutorial for implementation in R. yiqingxu.org/packages/fec... Hope you no longer need to spend months figuring out what these estimators are and how to use them.

Yes we do.

Short note on provision of "raw" data in replication packages. "Raw" are data files exactly as downloaded from original source. Not renamed, not converted, not made prettier. All that is important, and is the next step, for which you provide code (or instructions). But "raw" is as "raw as it gets".
