Census working paper showing that more accurate weather predictions save lives www.census.gov/library/work...

One reason I wish more humanities-oriented people would engage with AI is that models are writers, trained on words, producing words. There are strengths & weaknesses in the models that can only be seen if you engage deeply with them as writers. They do not show up in coding benchmarks or tests.

Unbelievable news. Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers. New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Are you an economist thinking about leaving federal government service? Come to this @sgeecon.bsky.social seminar to find how others made the transition to academia, nonprofits, the private sector, etc.

Good morning #Bluesky

We streamlined six new DID-like estimators and created this tutorial for implementation in R. yiqingxu.org/packages/fec... Hope you no longer need to spend months figuring out what these estimators are and how to use them.

Yes we do.

Short note on provision of "raw" data in replication packages. "Raw" are data files exactly as downloaded from original source. Not renamed, not converted, not made prettier. All that is important, and is the next step, for which you provide code (or instructions). But "raw" is as "raw as it gets".

Former Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on here! Welcome, @ericagroshen.bsky.social! If you care about workers, employers, jobs, and the federal statistical system, an essential follow.

We are seeing some impact on reproducibility efforts with the transition to the new US administration. For now, I suggest that you make backups of any data that required you to actively interact with the Federal government, as there may be a delay in response times.... #openscience

TPI International Productivity Research Conference: Call for papers http://dlvr.it/THcbFb #Econsky

This is an amazing paper. Physical injuries induce workers to pursue higher ed retraining --> they end up earning more than they were pre-injury. Bottom line: Not enough mid-career workers realize they should be re-skilling. (Feels a little like the Leavitt coin flip paper on status quo bias.)

#econsky I take a strange pleasure in there being yet another reason that prior DID papers could be wrong. [That said, failure to reject the null n.e. null is true. Your point estimate is still your best guess of the pop parameter. But still ... DID papers can suck it! 😜] doi.org/10.1002/jae....

Submissions due next Friday, January 31st for the Society of Government Economists Annual Conference. #CallforPapers #Econsky www.sge-econ.org/sge-2025-ann...
