Lots of days like this in Ireland lately!

To celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge, we’re running Irish language events between 1-17th March. We’d love for you to join us. The events are open to all. 💚 #SnaG www.nli.ie/news-stories...

Just in case you thought veganism was somehow inherently peaceful or enlightened.

Hey gang. Heard from an insider that ordering free tests will end tonight at midnight. Get yours now. special.usps.com/testkits

Scottish place names are full of ghosts. They describe fields that are no longer there, forests long felled. Gaelic carries the memory of people, land, and place. I wrote about it here: kristie-de-garis.ghost.io/scottish-gae... #Scotland #Gaelic #Writing #Gàidhlig #Place #Language

Great thread. I'm not the only history lecturer who expends significant effort trying to get students to go and find the book they need in the library in order to force the realisation that the books next to and near it -- which they didn't know existed -- are going to help them too.

I've almost ceased to be amazed when new evidence emerges of earlier dates for evidence of indigenous peoples activities. This one is huge though. Both early and later indigenous groups were less nomadic than commonly believed. www.popularmechanics.com/science/arch...

Stumbled across this today ... Crusaders or no, I still think some of these poses just look uncomfortable!

Ooooh shiny!

I'm particularly excited about the lecture on the Song of Amairgen and Cecile O'Rahilly's lost work on the Táin Bó Cúailnge

NEW! Dr Martin Goldberg of National Museums Scotland talks about the translation of THAT Old English runic inscription on the huge Hiberno-Scandinavian silver broadband armring from the Galloway Hoard. Part 1 of 3 🎬 Thanks to @ntlmuseumsscot.bsky.social @brucester74.bsky.social

New blog this morning! "Embedded deeply in the story is a larger theme of breakdown... What if Ragnarök is not the end of the world, but a cyclical curse triggered by a breakdown in relationships?" glassewitchcottage.com/2025/02/03/r... #HeathenSky #PaganSky #WitchSky

Hey friends. Just some thoughts from someone who's a bit homestead-y around the edges. Grocery costs are going up (and may get dramatically worse depending on what the orange menace does) and most of us are barely getting by as is. Here's what I'm doing to try to manage that. ~ Stock up on (1)

NEW: Federal workers are starting to receive a copy of the court's restraining order against the Trump administration barring the regime from freezing federal grants and financial assistance. Excellent work, and worth the read:

For the saint that's in it today, the etymology of the name "Brigit": Modern Irish Bríd [ˈbʲrʲiːdʲ] < pre-reform Irish Brighid < Old Irish Brigit [ˈbʲrʲiɣʲədʲ] < Primitive Irish *Brigēddī [ˈbriɣɛːdːiː] < Proto-Celtic *Brigantī < Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥g̑ʰn̥tih₂- "high one, elevated one (fem.)". /1

It's an important time to be sure of facts and history. The US border changed many times in the last 200 years, and in doing so it often divided related and closely connected communities. Modern citizenship *cannot* be determined by looking at someone. That is inherently racist.

🙌Funded PhD Opportunity!🙌 Please do share widely. The DCU School of History and Geography is currently advertising paid PhD opportunities esp in Medieval Ireland, the history of Irish towns and cities, legal history and women’s and gender history www.dcu.ie/historygeogr...

Really enjoyed "Ember of the Hands" (thanks @thecelticist.bsky.social for posting the reck) - about less known aspects of Norse life and culture from the perspective of archeology - life of woman, homes, games, instruments, slaves, childbirth etc. Illuminating and fun to read, highly recommend.
