Not a day goes by that I don’t think about all the voters who stayed home. We are going to have to find a way forward. The system is collapsing on the most vulnerable and it’s utterly shameful.

Hi friends. I haven’t fully made the transition to BSky yet because I’m so burnt out on social media. But I wanted to share something I just put on up Twitter. Khadijah and I are trying to remind everyone that Dr. Victoria Copeland still needs us to show up for her. www.gofundme.com/f/help-vs-me...

Critical hearing today at the CA state assembly on male violence against women & girls online. @safiyanoble.bsky.social called the abuse “a massive threat to our civil and human rights,” @moiradonegan.bsky.social referred to its “dignity tax” & @cagoldberglaw.bsky.social called for accountability.

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

#TVOff #WeNeedJoy — turn your TVs off after @joyannreid.bsky.social ‘s final show on the utterly shameful @msnbc.com that fired her for speaking truth to fascism. Wake up everyone, this is serious. We love you Joy-Ann, and we will continue to support you ♥️

You have been a champion for the public, for science and for accountability long before anyone knew! Thrilled to see this recognition that you absolutely deserve @alondra.bsky.social ♥️🥂

If we followed each other on Twitter, will you ♥️ this post so I can find you again over here, please? Thank you! Have a great day and keep fighting genocide and fascism!

I’m going to try and get my follow game up today and finally dive into this app even though the font is too small—this is my main impediment to participating. Sigh. The accessibility features on Bluesky are not it.

CARTOON OF THE DAY

lol THESE WHITE STUDENTS? bsky.app/profile/keit...

The thing is people freaked out by “diversity,” are mad if even one of us appears. Mad our credentials look just as good (or better) than theirs. Freaked out by the questions it raises. It’s not rational. Students looked slightly different, profs looked even less different, and they just melted down

In case you missed it: “social justice” and “equity” now interpreted as illegal in education under this far-right U.S. administration. We are experiencing the rollback of civil rights protection that only lasted two generations in American history. www.ed.gov/media/docume...

Now is the time for all my academic colleagues whose identities and/or work are not directly in the crosshairs of this ridiculous administration to step up in solidarity and signal support for your colleagues who are. This pretty much means straight white men not in social sciences or humanities.

Absolutely correct. Every day that the beast Elon Musk walks free is an obscenity.

Landlords getting caught raising rents well beyond the legal 10%. They’re doing this via platforms such as Zillow, all of which could EASILY put in a mechanism to disallow such gouging. But why should they, when they profit, too? www.commondreams.org/news/evictio...

Safe for now. Everyone we know knows someone who has lost everything. The breadth of the impact is wide & the shock & grief is indescribable. Air quality is terrible. Took in friends in need. I made a big pot of chili last night and we just sat up on alert. Thank you for checking on your LA peeps ♥️.

Stay safe LA! Check on your friends and neighbors. We worked a lot of phones tonight to get people evacuated to safety and at least half the people I called don’t have local TV and had no idea the fires were raging just a few miles away! We have lost a lot by losing common & accessible local news. 💔

Last post of the year: Happy new year, from our family to yours! We have much to be grateful for in the face of so much loss and injustice in 2024. ♥️ Wishing peace and love to you in 2025. I hope all your dreams come true.

I’m so proud to be part of this community, and the incredible work CCRI does in the world 👇🏾

Once again, the reason AI is facing a backlash isn’t because people are anti-tech, it’s because this is what AI *actually does* in the world — make services worse and people’s livelihoods more precarious

Accurate. 👇🏾

The Teamsters will launch the largest strike against Amazon in U.S. history beginning at 6 a.m. EST on Thurs., Dec. 19. The nationwide action follows Amazon’s repeated refusal to follow the law and bargain with the thousands of Amazon workers who organized with the Teamsters. Let's fucking go! 🔥

This was a good time. I love talking to smart and caring people 👇🏾

A legend I met once when I was young, who influenced so many of us, and gave us permission to become a lot of what we wanted to be. Rest in power,Nikki Giovanni. You will be missed ♥️ but not forgotten. You taught us the art and power of love.

For those who weren't already wise to Casey Newton's values /approach to tech journalism after what happened with @ubiquity75.bsky.social & @safiyanoble.bsky.social, and who also don't listen to @jathansadowski.com @bigblackjacobin.bsky.social or @techwontsave.us, here is another introduction:

Gary Marcus wrote a classy rebuke of Newton’s nonsense. Bless you, @garymarcus.bsky.social
