NASA’s Curiosity rover appears as a dark speck in this contrast-enhanced view captured on Feb. 28, 2025, by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Trailing Curiosity are the rover’s tracks, which can linger on the Martian surface for months before being erased by the wind.

"We achieve some measure of adulthood when we recognize our parents as they really were, without sentimentalizing or mythologizing, but also without blaming them unfairly for our imperfections." ❤️☮️🌎 Carl Sagan ; Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

"The entire evolutionary record on our planet, particularly the record contained in fossil endocasts, illustrates a progressive tendency toward intelligence. There is nothing mysterious about this: smart organisms by and large survive better and leave more offspring than stupid ones." Carl Sagan

"We are star stuff, which has taken its destiny into its own hands. Our own planet is only a tiny part of the vast cosmic tapestry, a starry fabric of worlds yet untold. Those worlds in space are as countless as all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the earth." Carl Sagan ❤️☮️🌏

"Science is an enterprise that gives its highest rewards to those who disprove the views of its most revered figures. Religion is exactly the opposite. Religion doesn’t want any criticism of its most revered figures. Science makes progress." Carl Sagan "Science Makes Progress" ❤️☮️🌏 #carlsagan

"Here it is, a fragile, delicate, pale, blue dot, and that's where we live. That's where every human has ever lived, and you can see the vulnerability at a glance. And that gives a humbling, and I think character-building, sense of where we are." Carl Sagan "Pale Blue Dot" (Charlie Rose Interview)

Raikoke Volcano on the Kuril Islands rarely erupts. The small, oval-shaped island most recently exploded in 1924 and in 1778. The dormant period ended around 4:00 a.m. local time on June 22, 2019, when a vast plume of ash and volcanic gases shot up from its 700-meter-wide crater.

The Cygnus Loop is a supernova remnant left over from a massive stellar explosion that occurred 5,000 to 8,000 years ago.

"It is no accident that, whatever their human flaws, and how ever moribund the human space program has become (a trend that the Hubble Space Telescope repair mission may have helped to reverse), astronauts and cosmonauts are still widely regarded as heroes of our species." Carl Sagan

“..Difficulty in attempting to restructure American societies arises from this resistance by groups with vested interests in the status quo. Significant change might require those who are now high in the hierarchy to move downward many steps. This seems to them undesirable and its resisted.” CS

"..every cell is a triumph of natural selection. And we're made of trillions of cells. We are, each of us, a multitude. Within us is a little universe." Carl Sagan ; Cosmos

Happy 35th birthday to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope! 🎉 🎂 This image features a pillar of cold gas and dust about 9.5 light-years tall. However, what you see is just a small piece of Messier 16–better known as the famous Eagle Nebula.

An Almost Everything Sky (APOD: 2025 Apr 23) This surprising sky has almost everything. First, slanting down from the upper left and far in the distance is the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy.

Last year, Hubble shared this jaw-dropping view of HP Tau. This triple-star system, located 550 light-years away, illuminates clouds of gas and dust around it. Most T Tauri stars are younger than 10 million years old. For context, our Sun is about 4.6 billion years old!

"If some good evidence for life after death were announced, I’d be eager to examine it; but it would have to be real scientific data, not mere anecdote. Better the hard truth than the comforting fantasy." Carl Sagan ; The Demon-Haunted World ❤️☮️🌏 #carlsagan

About 160,000 light-years away, the star cluster NGC 1850 shines in this image from Hubble's 33rd year.

"The difficulty in attempting to restructure American and other societies arises from resistance by groups with vested interests in the status quo. Significant change might require those who are now in the hierarchy to step down. This seems to them undesirable and is resisted." Carl Sagan ❤️☮️🌏🔭

"The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand." Carl Sagan ; Pale Blue Dot #carlsagan #science

“Modern science has been a voyage into the unknown, with a lesson in humility waiting at every stop. Many passengers would rather have stayed home.” Carl Sagan ; Pale Blue Dot #carlsagan #science

“...there is no deeper religious feeling than the feeling for the natural world. I wouldn't separate the world of nature from the religious instinct...I would not even object to saying that the sense of awe before the grandeur of nature is itself a religious experience.” CS

The Orion Nebula in Visible and Infrared (APOD: 2025 Apr 20) The Great Nebula in Orion is a colorful place. Visible to the unaided eye, it appears as a small fuzzy patch in the constellation of Orion.

"A universe in which everything is known would be static and dull, as boring as the heaven of some weak-minded theologians. A universe that is unknowable is no fit place for a thinking being. The ideal universe for us is one very much like the universe we inhabit." Carl Sagan ❤️☮️🌏

"We live in a society absolutely dependent on science and technology and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. That's a clear prescription for disaster." Carl Sagan #science #technology

"It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas." Carl Sagan "The Burden of Skepticism" ❤️☮️🌏 #carlsagan

"We can pray over the sick or we can give them medicine. The scientific treatments are far more effective than the alternatives. The faithful would rather see their children die than give them antibiotics. Abandoning science means abandoning much more than air conditioners, radios, and fast cars."

The interplanetary scene was captured in clear but moonlit skies from June Lake, California on April 14. Seen against background of stars toward the constellation Andromeda, the comet was then some 10 light-minutes from our fair planet. Comet C/2025 F2 SWAN (APOD: 2025 Apr 18)

“Science is a way to call the bluff of those who only pretend to knowledge. It is a bulwark against mysticism, against superstition, against religion misapplied to where it has no business being.” Carl Sagan : The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

“Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking; a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility." Carl Sagan

The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.

"Science has beauty, power, and majesty that can provide spiritual as well as practical fulfillment. But superstition and pseudoscience keep getting in the way, providing easy answers, casually pressing our awe buttons, and cheapening the experience." Carl Sagan "Does Truth Matter?"
