Kind colleague I just had a meeting with: "When's the book of your PhD dissertation coming out?" Me: "pls no"

Me to myself while doing final edits on a book chapter I wrote a year ago

Really glad to able to publish this excellent piece by Sean Andrews 🇦🇺 ⚓️ If you have excellent maritime thoughts too, give the submission guidelines a read and pitch me!

These books taught me both where Svalbard is and to never go there due to the inevitable disappointment at the lack of panserbjørne

The Council on Geostrategy is delighted to be hosting the First Sea Lord’s Sea Power Conference 2025! ⚓ @starychsam.bsky.social, our Co-founder (Strategy), is at Lancaster House to provide an overview of the conference Find out more 👇 www.geostrategy.org.uk/first-sea-lo... #SPC2025 #RoyalNavy

On this day 80 years ago, the 11th Armoured Division of the British Army liberated the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. They found 60,000 prisoners and 13,000 unburied corpses. Never again.

It's never easy being a woman in a male-dominated field, but it's always hilarious to hear about the male "colleagues" (thankfully few) who think you're a diversity hire because their own careers aren't going so well. Cry harder, my dudes.

Our latest in The Broadside - the wonderful Matthew Palmer on fast attack craft

On this day in 2022, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the cruiser Moskva, was hit by Ukrainian Neptune missiles. The following day, the fire reached her ammo stores and she was promoted to submarine. It's also my birthday - this was a great gift. Слава Україні!

So every year, the night before my birthday, my friend and I do a movie night. This year, we decided to watch the movie that defined my teenage psyche, The Crow (1994), and then the recent remake. Don't.

I just won an argument over text with an American and signed off with this, we are so back

Did I wear dazzle to another naval conference? YOU BETCHA

How every naval project I'm doing about/with Americans feels now

I'll be in London later this month to talk to @brianklaas.bsky.social at the Conduit Club. We'll explore how dictators fall and what happens when they do. I've been told it's possible to attend the event even if you aren't a member of the club. Register here: share-eu1.hsforms.com/19NvHjniQQu6...

Trying to U-turn on those tariffs, I see

Our second article in The Broadside - the importance of risk, resilience and reconstitution, from the excellent Andy Young

My vibe as the America expert at the European military conference

For context - yields up means prices down, which means people are selling US Treasury bonds. Those bonds are usually what people would buy when stocks are not doing great. Investors fleeing US stocks and bonds *at the same time* is, with apologies for the technical language, a big OH SHIT moment

Some short thoughts from me on EU defence funding in @warontherocks.bsky.social warontherocks.com/2025/04/in-b...

It has really hit home to me this week, spending time with European allies, how much the vibe has shifted regarding the USA - not only for the present, but for the foreseeable future. Not a blip, but a fundamental reorganisation of our outlook. You can't surge trust, and it is largely lost.

I would like to clarify that I am posting this under duress, but I am informed that I must share with you all the abysmal pun I just made... ... le pen marine

For our first article in The Broadside, we are delighted to have this excellent piece from @charlottekl.bsky.social - showing the importance of commercial shipping for maritime security

A pleasure to be among friends, and an honour to be the 🇬🇧 representative among allies 🇳🇱 🇩🇪 🇸🇪 🇧🇪 🇪🇸 Talking ship is always fun, but even more so with such warm Dutch hospitality. Bedankt!

The problem with being the only Brit at a European military conference is that it's like a family holiday gathering - everyone brings up the time their navy beat ours that one time several centuries ago and then makes Brexit jokes

An absolute unit, a heckin' chonker, oh lawd she comin' (Oldest ship model ever found, c1425, Rotterdam Maritime Museum)

My hotel in the Netherlands is full of Americans... from Florida

She's so beautiful

Also, the place I'm staying for this academic conference is called... Brainpark 🤌🏻

I've been in the Netherlands for three (3) hours, and after two glasses of champagne, an espresso martini, and some of the best frites available to humanity I am hereby doubling down on European strategic autonomy

Locking up the classics/econ crossover audience

A small joy for you all, as it makes me smile every time - the power line pylons in northern France look like owls

London -> Lilles -> Brussels -> Rotterdam Four countries by train in four hours. Je t'adore, Europe!
