Taking the kids to Pizza Hut and Dog Man as a half term treat. Signing up to a free trial of Amazon Prime to get 2 for £10 cinema tickets. Looking up the code for a free kids' buffet. When did life get so complicated? Remember back in 2005 when it cost £5 to go to the cinema and that felt expensive?

"When you say 'Children's fantasy?' They say 'Yes Lewis!' But Pullman's in the house to show you what True is. You call it Narnia but it's the land of Nod Now watch this little girl on a quest to kill God."

Probs to all the parents at this playground in February. Extra probs to the parents of tinies brightly pretending to go shopping and pushing people on swings instead of shivering on a bench on their phone like me.

Time for my regular post for new writers about picture books. You do NOT need illustrations to submit a picture book text to an agent or publisher. Please do not pay anyone to create illustrations for you. It’s not necessary, you just need the text.

Happy "Microsoft trying to force CoPilot subs" day in the UK for all who celebrate. (They just pinged me my renewal notice with it carefully worded to sound like a compulsory general price increase). 1) Go to your account page 2) Hit cancel 3) Change sub back.

After I watched It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood I told my then five-year-old "I like you just the way you are." "I like you just the way you are too, Mummy," he said and WOW Mr Rogers was right, that's some powerful shit right there.

My child, clutching a large, obvious toy with a nominal booklet attached. "I really want this book. Because I ... just really want to learn about gold." #hmm #ScholasticBookFair

I'm an optimist. It's probably one of my defining characteristics. Optimism is INCREDIBLY useful if you're trying to do hard things. It is also a problem if you are trying to do hard things which intrinsically take a long time, because you're permanently disappointed they haven't happened already.

My most boomer opinion is that a single first class stamp should not cost £1.65.

My friend Garrett once absolutely skewered a guy for saying something sexist, and when someone else tried to defend him by saying 'he's just saying it to get a reaction' Garrett followed with 'well this is the reaction, is anyone enjoying it?' The sexist was silent the rest of the night.

Reminder - there is a once in a generation opportunity to recruit the best US brains fleeing Trump

Three cheers for @bookshop-org-uk.bsky.social for bringing back their Read It Forward initiative. 10% of every children’s book sale made via the platform in Feb 2025 (inc pre-orders) will be donated to charities @booktrust.org.uk & @scottishbooktrust.bsky.social 🛍️ #ReadItForward buff.ly/4gkTga1

I’m supporting @bookshop-org-uk.bsky.social's brilliant #ReadItForward campaign this February – buy any children's book from them (hopefully mine!), and they'll donate 10% to @booktrust.org.uk and @scottishbooktrust.bsky.social! More here 👉 alastairc.com/blog/2025013... #KidLitUK

Important update from the Pratchett estate about the Good Omens graphic novel. www.kickstarter.com/projects/dun...

My mum used to run an after school club. They got so fed up of parents being late they introduced extra fees per 10 minutes late. Late pick ups soared. Parents tried to be on time when it was putting staff out, but were willing to pay a fee for a service they wanted. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

A fact I like to point out in my classes is that by the beginning of the Civil War, every white-controlled Christian denomination in the American South had developed a pro-slavery theology and adopted it as their official position- except for the Quakers.

In The Handmaid's Tale, Quakers were at the heart of rebellion against the regime. Nice to see @margaretatwood.bsky.social being right about something again.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #165345: Getting published is hard enough. But staying published is harder. The literary world is filled with once-successful authors who can't get a publishing deal any more. That's why it's important to stay in touch; keep flexible; change, when you have to.

Jesus. Twister in Donegal right now.

Since this is making the rounds. Just.... no. After Jesus says, "Love your Neighbor," someone asks, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus responds with the Parable of the Good Samaritan, in which he tells the audience that the ethnic group they hate the most are their neighbors. ⚓ #ActuallyReadTheBible
