Best Theratronics workers were on strike for almost a full year from an employer that refused to negotiate with them. Through the extreme cold and extreme heat they preserved and got a deal for themselves because they didn't stand down - this is the power of a union 💪

A central part of Mark Sutcliffe's "fairness campaign" was that the feds were shortchanging #ottcity when it came to PILTs - seems like the courts disagree. All this was and has been is an excuse for Sutcliffe to put the blame on someone else for his abysmal financial management.

Kiss of death

Kudos to community members in #Ottawa who disrupted this anti-trans event at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Library and shame on the OPL for allowing this to happen. As an institution thats been supportive of the LGBTQ+ community this is disappointing. They need to apologize.

How many more times do we have to fucking say it: You cannot overdose on fentanyl simply by touching it or breathing near it and our mainstream newspapers need to stop reporting it as fact just because the police say so.

Of course ridership didn't increase, because you lowered the quality and frequency of service! This is exactly the argument everyone made to restore off-peak headways! You cant cut service and expect more people to take the train - its clear Amilcar and head OC Transpo staff are not transit users.

The point many of us made last summer is that frequency matters beyond just capacity. 10-minute headways can mean waiting for the train as much as riding it for multi-stop trips. The commute-centric view of transit is penny wise but pound foolish. www.ctvnews.ca/ottawa/artic...

Insane. This is 20% of all programs at Algonquin being cut while the College's President continues to make close to $350k and the province conitnues to critically underfund post secondary institutions. This has nothing to do with international students.

The solution to fixing the #Ottawa LRT isnt to transfer responsibility to Metrolinx and Toronto-based consultants - its by actually giving the city the funding it needs to serve everyone. The only LRT worse than Ottawa's is the Eglington Crosstown owned by...you guessed it Metrolinx.

Did you catch the news? Apparently boycotts are good now.

Today is the commemoration of the QC Mosque shooting and I'm thinking about my Muslim friends and how Islamophobia has gotten worse here in Ottawa and across Canada. I'm thinking about how the safety of Jews, Muslims and everyone else is intertwined. We need to keep organizing together.

Just remember that this happened under a Liberal government.

Apparently Lansdowne has lost money once again for the 10th straight year. I've got a great idea though - why don't we pour half a billion dollars into it so we can make the hockey arena smaller?! Maybe I should be Mayor.

🧵- (1/5) Council approved moving forward with a renoviction bylaw today, but these councillors all voted no: ❌ David Hill ❌ Matthew Luloff ❌ Steve Desroches ❌ David Brown ❌ Wilson Lo ❌ George Darouze

Not a conincidence one of the few #ottcity councillors to oppose an anti-renovictions bylaw this morning is David Hill who accepted close to 45% of his 2022 campaign donations from those connected to the development industry and is a frequent cheerleader for GOHBA, a prominent developer lobby group.

Toronto: Air rail link is faster than driving. Ottawa: Air rail link is slower than the bus.

ICYMI: My oped in the @ottawacitizen.com over the weekend - it's clear from watching what's happening in Toronto when it comes to transit funding, Mayor Sutcliffe is not doing "all that he can" to ensure we properly fund our transit system - in fact it's just the opposite:

While Mark Sutcliffe continues to play the blame game when it comes to our transit funding crisis, his Toronto counterpart has gotten millions from other levels of govt for the TTC while also improving their system - theres a lot he can learn. From me this AM in the @ottawacitizen.com:

Excellent piece from @samhersh01.bsky.social on lessons to learn, and how to meet promises, negotiate better. Transit needs to be funded as priority 1/ ottawacitizen.com/opinion/hers...

It's clear that this ceasefire couldve been reached months ago - something the Democrats claimed was impossible. I hope the faces of the Palestinian victims of American bombs haunt Joe Biden and Anthony Blinken for the rest of their sad, miserable lives.

In 2025, my rent is increasing by $37.21/month, or $446.52 total. This is more than 2x the impact of a 5.4% property tax increase on the average Toronto homeowner. And my rent both contributes to the public good by offsetting the property taxes on my building and grows my landlord's private wealth.

Nightmare blunt rotation

Two days ago, a homeless man froze to death on the streets of #Ottawa, today CBC Ottawa reports that City staff are opposing a bylaw to stop renovictions that displace people from their homes. I can't think of a more callous reaction to this tragedy.

This is the difference a progressive mayor can make. Instead of cutting transit service and raising fares hoping residents will magically take transit like Mark Sutcliffe, Olivia Chow is actually taking real steps to improve ridership and reliability. toronto.citynews.ca/2025/01/07/t...

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke is now amplifying residential school denialism. It’s just the latest example of his embrace of extreme right-wing conspiracies and how he’s trying to use his position to reshape Canadian politics.

Absolutely fucking devastating. This sort of thing doesnt happen by accident. It happens because our city continues to spend hundreds of millions of dollars subsidizing P3 sports stadiums and endless budget increases for cops rather than affordable housing or community services.

This seems excessive.

We’re excited that Lines 2 and 4 are now open, but we still have some concerns… (🧵) At first, the train will only be running on weekdays and with 12-minute headways. It’s disappointing to get partial and infrequent service considering how long folks have already been waiting.

Austerity and poor planning continue to deprive us of being #OurBestOttawa; the Watson legacy lives on. Yes, line 2 will be good, but like nearly everything this city builds, is it good enough? My guess: 5 years and we start planning to double track at huge cost and disruption.

I'm excited for the Trillium Line to open as we all should be but there are still some glaring issues as this article says: "Unlike the twin-tracked Confederation Line, the Trillium Line has long stretches of single track. If a train breaks down there, there is no way to bypass it." 1/2

The @ottawapolice.bsky.social come to the #ottcity budget meeting saying the same thing every year - violent crime is skyrocketting because we don't give them enough money. Then they get the money and say the same thing again - maybe giving them endless amounts of money...isnt the solution?

holy hell this is sad stuff from CNN

The fact that any politician, organization, faith leader, journalist or individual feels the need to defend this will haunt me for the rest of my days. What's even more terrifying is that they think it's the "principled stance" to take - it really sends shivers down your spine.

Our *public* broadcaster is publishing an article about how we should privatize our *public* postal service. Should end very well I'm sure.

A small amout of justice as the inquest rules Abdi's death a homicide thanks in part to the advocacy of Justice for Abdi and I hope this sparks change but its clear little has changed as the city continues to reward the OPS huge budget increases as they continue to abuse their power.

Trudeau's biggest champion is leaving cabinet, on the day of the fall economic update, and has harsh words for the 'gimmicky' spending of the last couple of weeks.

Another casualty of the vibecession

This article isn't from some left publication or a union - it's from an HR magazine and even they say that forcing workers back to the office has been worse overall for businesses leading to higher employee turnover among other things:

Oh please. This wasn't a personal attack. At the end of the day, Amilcar's leadership has a lot to do with why ridership hasn't gone up. I think someone who makes almost $350k/yr on the public dime deserves some degree of public scrutiny don't you?

Any recent arrivals to this site who should be added to the Ottawa City Chat starter pack? (Or earlier arrivals missed the first time)

Council has just approved the 2025 Budget, and after significant backlash from the community, they backed down on some of the worst fare increases, but what we're left with is still a budget that puts the burden of funding transit on riders. Read more: www.horizonottawa.ca/budget_2025_...
