It frustrates me so much how nobody in the general public understands the "war is politics by other means" maxim. Nobody besides a few sadists are actually "pro war", but ending wars often comes with concessions which really are more painful than continuing the war

Let’s be clear: This is the end result of 30 years of conservative thought. Small government, free markets, blah blah, all of it ended with this: the indiscriminate firing of the scientists who predict the fucking weather. Their goal is to literally drag us back into the dark ages.

As you read this "Exclusive" on the lead FBI agent spilling the beans on their "SARS-CoV-2 came from a lab", the thing that sticks out is the fact that they have absolutely nothing suggesting it did. Bupkis. It's the same ignorant misrepresentations and conspiracy theories, 👇 being but one example.

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world. www.science.org/content/arti...

This story is pretty funny. NIMBYs will lie about absolutely anything. “Mom hated that tree” publicola.com/2025/02/24/a...

Appeasement was a deliberate approach to buy time for rearmament, in large part because UK intelligence had a completely wrong view of what Germany's actual capability was in 37-38 This is collaboration with the enemy

Another way to put this: Musk and his twerps have exposed us to pandemics, broken science, stolen all your data, endangered the U.S. payments system, threatened air traffic control, and cut off HIV medication to 20m people in order to save ::checks notes:: 2/10th of a percent of the federal budget.

democracy in michigan and wisconsin was crushed to the point of near-irreversibility until 2020 -- vastly worse than what trump seems likely to be able to do before 2028 -- and we fought back, inch by inch, until we took it back, despite Republicans having both structural advantages and real support

seems like it is a big deal that the unifying ideology of the doge team is neo nazism

One of the questions after my talk today was about scientists refusing to buck the administration because they fear losing their jobs. I said that a lot of self-styled apolitical scientists lost their jobs this week, so silence will not save them. Respond and keep your values and dignity.

Make no mistake. This is an all-out attack on health in America. Not only is the EIS vital to controlling infectious disease; it was where a remarkably high fraction of our public health leaders received formative training and experience. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

I’ve noticed some folks surprised by the recent politicization of health (eg COVID, gender, data, etc.). Public health & politics have always been intrinsically related. For good & bad. It’s myopic to think they’re not, & history has shown this dynamic for millennia (1/n)

Führerprinzip.

It could be argued that I’ve wasted 20 years of my life doing the same. My first article about RFK Jr.’s antivax conspiracies was in 2005.) Most—although, in fairness, not all—of my colleagues looked askance at my activism, as though it was a quirky hobby rather than very, very necessary.

without immigrants, American science loses without science, America loses simple as that

There will be nothing left of biomedical research in the US when Trump is done. Just think about that and anytime you or someone you love has been sick or dying. www.science.org/content/arti...

I will never get over all the very serious national security knowers in the Senate who just voted to confirm Grayzone Kim Philby www.npr.org/2025/02/12/n...

Here’s my post on the NIH indirect costs slash-and-burn. God, these people are exhausting:

Attack #2 in Trump's war on science. We cannot let this stand. www.science.org/content/arti...

WAY surpasses Watergate. It’s the most serious constitutional crisis since 1861.

It was always apparent but now it's increasingly undeniable that all these 20-something DOGE employees were chosen not *in spite* of inadequate vetting but *because* they would not pass vetting. Trump & Musk chose the people who seemed the most willing to commit illegal acts on their behalf.

Super Bowl USAID Save Foreign Aid

Cargo cult fascism folks, they're saying it more and more, big strong men with tears in their eyes, they're saying, sir, they're building a papier-mâché idol of the past, and I ask why, and they say, sir, it's because they can't tell the difference the form and the function of power. Sad!

one thing that tends to work very well in large organizations is when someone demands a complete switchover of a fundamental IT system on an accelerated timetable

Genotype D1.1 of H5N1 confirmed in Nevada cattle, which is the one circulating in birds and not B3.13, causing the wider cattle epizootic in the U.S. In other words, this is a second observed jump from birds into cows. Keep rolling the dice, shall we? www.feedstuffs.com/agribusiness...

This post is dedicated to all the folks On Here who ranted about “the Blob” during the last campaign and then decided that Trump would be an improvement because he allegedly represented a foreign policy of restraint. You fucking idiots.

Those who say nothing against the fantasy of expelling 2m Palestinians from Gaza, have no right to say anything against fantasies of expelling 7m Jews from Israel.

Khmer Douche

Counterpoint: no one should have any chill about this whatsoever

Heads up everyone. Contacting their office is actually one of the most impactful things a citizen can do. So on the off chance these rumors are true please respectfully reach out to Senator Whitehouse’s office and voice your concerns about RFK’s nomination www.whitehouse.senate.gov/contact/emai...

It's strange how all of these "earnest defenders" of RFK Jr somehow don't have the time to actually examine what he says in detail and would rather defend an imagined version of him.

In any free and functioning democracy preemptive pardoning of public servants for doing their jobs to avoid politically-motivated malicious charges shouldn't be thing. What's become painfully obvious with MAGA and their useful idiots like RFKjr, Bhattacharya and BSNow is that this became necessary.

Research funded by NIH is the foundation for these advances -- contact your Congress person to support continued funding for science. 🧪

No. You are lying to vulnerable parents and taking their money while providing no clinically meaningful interventions. Thanks for asking.
