Will TikTok go dark again in the U.S.? Or will it find a buyer before the April 5th deadline? Lots of speculation right now, but few concrete details. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Thank you Meta for finally addressing my biggest problem with your apps (they protect my privacy too much)

I am happy to say the "Followers only" reply setting is getting implemented. We're also adding a way to set default reply settings If you want your posts to default to "Followers only," that'll become an option

Is it time to finally leave that social media platform behind? This is something I'm seeing a lot of people talk about, including SMMs. If this has been on your mind, today's TSP newsletter talks about how to leave, when to leave, and where to go. thesocialplatypus.substack.com/p/bye-bye-bye

I disagree with this CTV News article that anyone is “anxiously” waiting to see what happens with the tariffs. Canadians are already hitting back hard by opting for Product of Canada purchases. www.ctvnews.ca/politics/art...

In the words of Liz Lemon: “0h brother.” 🙄

If you’re looking for a new show - I highly recommend North of North on @cbcgem.bsky.social. Heartwarming and funny.

The 1st time the Trump administration tried to ban TikTok (in 2020) Oracle & Walmart were in talks to buy the app. Here we are in 2025 & once again there are reports that Oracle (and a group of U.S. investors) are in talks with White House officials over TikTok. @npr.org www.npr.org/2025/01/25/g...

This is shocking.

We had to get in on the video action too — Bluesky now has custom feeds for video! Like any other feed, you can choose to pin these or not. Bluesky is yours to customize.

📢 Bluesky 1.96.5 rolling out now A couple of quick updates for everybody! Have a great weekend! • On desktop web, clicking your profile pic now opens a quick account switcher • You can now report a DM conversation without opening it • Improvements to gestures on Android

I really long for the days when my biggest social media stress was trying to fit a handle, hashtag and link into 140 characters.

TikTok could be banned. Soon. OR it might not get banned. Soon or ever. I hope this has been helpful

Meta's removal of third-party fact checking and updates to its Hateful Conduct that remove restrictions on topics like immigration, gender identity and gender will likely cause an increase in hateful rhetoric. If your company doesn't have a social media comment policy yet, you need one now.

The US gov't has really poked a bear over this potential TikTok ban. I've seen lots of anti-Meta videos, and lots of TikTokers talking about moving over to the Chinese-based app, Red Note. The app has become so popular that even in Canada (where I am), it's currently ranked 4th in the App Store.

I hit pause on my newsletter last year amid some health issues and life events. But I'm excited to say that I'm back! The first issue went out this morning. Inside the issue: A long-video trend, Meta's "free speech" updates, and a new Gen Z obsession. thesocialplatypus.substack.com/p/its-a-long...

Just finished writing my newsletter for Monday morning. It's the first one in a while. I had to take a break last year due to health issues and some other life events. It feels so good to be back!

What a year! Bluesky opened its doors just last February. Since then, we opened federation, launched video, rolled out trending topics, and a whole lot more. Happy New Year, and here’s to a great year ahead! 🎉

Welcome, Generation Beta (2025-2039). May social media and AI be kind to you. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Great research on what Gen Z got for xmas (the number one gift was a bit surprising): www.tiktok.com/@caseymorrow... FYI: I noticed a lot of Gen Alpha kids unwrapping food items like Ranch dressing and cans of beans. 🫘

Is anyone else surprised that it's officially 2025 and no one has created a movie yet featuring a social media manager dealing with a major PR/or other type of crisis? I feel like so many of us have a story to tell.

Went to the Santa Claus parade in Harrow, Ontario last night. Great parade, but the best part may have been watching these riders take their horses through the Tims drive thru afterwards. 🐴

📢 App Version 1.96 is rolling out now (1/6) In this release: a notifications Mentions tab, reserving your default username when you verify your account with a domain, and other improvements!

The polarizing nature of social media platforms seems to be getting more severe. Someone I know in the post-secondary space recently told me that leadership doesn’t want them to leave Twitter completely and move to Bluesky because they might appear too left leaning. Anyone else experienced this?

I just rewatched Edward Scissorhands, and it honestly felt like the life cycle of some influencers (special skill that at first people love, but then there’s jealousy and they get cancelled). Have I just worked in social media too long or does anyone else see that comparison?

I’m really happy to have Lists back. Thanks @bsky.app 😊

From Liam Payne to Coastal Granddaughters, here are the top trending searches for 2024, according to Google

What I find interesting is how many creators on TikTok aren’t really panicking at a potential U.S. ban. In the past when it seemed imminent, they would share their handles elsewhere. I’m only seeing that occasionally this time. Maybe we’re all a little worn down from everything else going on?

Depending on what's included, I would be open to paying for a Bluesky subscription. I used to pay for Twitter Blue in the pre-Elon Musk Twitter era and liked the added features.

Beautiful morning for taking a walk and grabbing photos at the John R. Park Homestead in #WindsorEssex.

We may also see an increase in Instagram activity and posts on other platforms as U.S. TikTok creators start to shift elsewhere amid a potential U.S. ban.

Great starter pack if you want to check out the academic side of Bluesky.

A few years ago, I led a session on social media safety for children in Grades 1-3, and they asked really sophisticated questions about hacking, and many knew about platforms like LinkedIn. It might be a bit late to enact this type of measure now.

People are often surprised when I tell them this: both Twitter and Facebook/insta/threads are now specifically engineered to downgrade, hide, suppress real journalism. If this platform is different, that's a huge change
