The first map of Springfield, Illinois, was printed in 1856. The city’s population was around 7,000, and a local politician named Abraham Lincoln was on his way to national prominence. SangamonLink.org, the digital encyclopedia of Sangamon County history, makes its Bluesky debut with this post.

it is honestly kind of striking to me that the founders were basically on target re: “things that could end our republic”
