My "don't get me started" opinion is that TV needs to lean into its episodic structure to be truly successful. Otherwise just make a movie.

I've been giving it more thought, and I think one of the things I like best about Spirit Island is the feeling of catharsis that it offers. The game feels impossible at the beginning, but by the end you can wreck your vengeance upon that colonizing scum. Very satisfying two-act structure.

Spirit Island is becoming the sort of game I think about when I'm not playing it. Probably the most complex cooperative game I've ever played, but maybe one of the most rewarding too.

One of my great weaknesses as a game critic is my inability to remember which one is Richard Berg, and which one is Richard Borg.

My desktop says it is -8 outside right now. The weather literally owes me degrees. When can I expect them?

New season of Cult of the Old has begun. Over the course of this season we will be covering everything from respected classics to mainstream hits. Wouldn't be possible without my excellent friends @sanildefanso.bsky.social and @mattthr.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/7HI4...

A snow day game of Ark Nova with my 14-year-old. I squeaked out a very narrow win, just 3 points. If we have to be cooped up in this hideous weather, this definitely softens the blow.

Oh happy day! The COTO podcast is back! There’s no better opportunity for a boardgame old-timer like myself to both agree & argue with what I’m hearing. :-)

Cult of the Old fans, we have an announcement. Season 3 is beginning on Monday! Along with @sanildefanso.bsky.social nso and @mattthr.bsky.social we will dive once more into the depths of boardgames past to bring up some pearls, and the occasional flounder. open.spotify.com/show/0diLNwE...

The new season of Cult of the Old is upon us! Listen to the capable hosting of @giantbrain.co.uk! Hear the insightful comments of @mattthr.bsky.social! Tolerate the American guy! The new episode, on Ticket to Ride, is available in whatever podcast platform you like.

I think my most played game of 2025 so far has been The Gang, and it's not close. This co-op take on Texas Hold 'Em is subtly very clever. When you remove better from Poker, you remove most of the mechanics. So The Gang exists almost totally above the table. But it's got a lot to chew on still.

Everyone clear your throat, and say it together... YEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH

There are few things in sports as deflating as believing your team was one of destiny, only to realize you are a bit player in another team's story. I realized that when Ohio State got bodied by Florida in 2007, and that's what happened to the Chiefs last night.

For whatever reason I've gotten a couple new followers today. So hi! I don't post very much, but when I do it's about board games. Also I am co-host of a podcast with @giantbrain.co.uk and @mattthr.bsky.social. Our third season begins soon!

My son wanted me to put some music on his phone, and he specifically told me that he wanted a lot of Spoon on there. I'm just so proud to have a twelve-year-old with such good taste.

No Star Wars. No Star Trek. Name a favorite sci-fi franchise. (Include the name in the alt text)

Is there a word for games with deep complex mechanics, that continually release piles of deep, challenging to integrate content into their games? Because few games are as challenging to get into as games like that. Looking at you, Root and Spirit Island.

Explain your username: When I was in high school, a friend of mine decided one day that he would call me San Ildefonso. I don't know why, but it was in reference to one of several treaties between France and Spain in the last 18th and early 19th Centuries. I'm a weird dude who had weird friends.

I've started using Signal a lot more, and exchanging info on that platform makes me feel a lot like I'm back in the AIM days.

My brain keeps singing the words to "Piano Man," but to the tune of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row." I'm not sure if it is or isn't an improvement.

When I was a preteen they would sometimes do a game of Risk or Monopoly, but by the time I was a teenager they left those experiences to my friends. Since I've become an adult I haven't subjected them to too many hobby games, unless I think it'll work for them. (Ticket to Ride, Codenames, etc.)

Hey, Civ VII will have Jose Rizal as an available leader! I've wanted more representation from the Philippines in that game. Now it will be less weird to create a religion called "Jollibee" and spread it all over the world. Not that I've done that...more than a couple times.

Uh oh, @gmtgames.bsky.social has put an expansion to I, Napoleon on P500. Not many auto-backs for me, but I think that'll be one of them.

Shocked that Dune Part 2 got a best picture nomination. Not because of its quality, but because I completely forgot it came out in 2024.

Years of sharing a car with my wife has trained me to always turn down the music. Now that I have my own car, and our kids sometimes have to choose who to ride with, and they often choose me. And I like to believe it's because I'm listening to music at a volume where you can rock out effectively.
