Statement from the SANS Executive Board: Supporting Scientific Integrity for Advancing Social and Affective Neuroscience (Image for convenience, text in quoted thread.)

Recently proposed U.S. policies including cuts to NIH funding, keyword censorship of grants, withdrawal of information from the public, and mass layoffs of employees in federal agencies threaten the integrity of science and well-being of people throughout the world.

I have always considered SANS to be my "home" conference/society, so I am delighted and deeply honored to receive this year's SANS Early Career Award!

Please join us in congratulating the SANS 2025 Award winners! Mid-career award: Cate Hartley (www.hartleylab.org) Early-career award: Mark Thornton @markthornton.bsky.social Both awards will be presented at the 2025 Annual Meeting at Chicago (registration now open)!

We are SO excited to bring debates back to #SANS2025! If you aren't sure if you should submit to SANS 2025 -- I am here to tell you that you should :)

We have been working hard to put an awesome line-up of researchers with what we are hoping will be thought-provoking and inspiring symposia. Abstract submissions deadlines have been extended to December 30th -- would love to see your work!

#SANS2025 will feature two debates! First Damien Fair will debate @thaliawheatley.bsky.social about the usefulness of large consortia vs. small bespoke studies, then @mohammadatari.bsky.social will debate @markthornton.bsky.social about caution vs. acceleration in applying AI to social neuroscience!

The #SANS2025 Program-at-a-Glance and Preconference workshop information are now both available on the SANS website! socialaffectiveneuro.org/program/

Registration for #SANS2025 is open: socialaffectiveneuro.org/registration/ Register by March 15 for Early Bird Registration Rates! Registration is also less expensive for members than non-members.

New starter pack: people doing science with narratives, naturalistic memory, natural conversations, and using language models for psych/cog sci 📖💻📚 (Reply with 🙋 if you'd like to be added!) go.bsky.app/LGRYMvQ

I've started working on a (very incomplete!) starter pack for social interaction researchers! If you're working in this space, please asked to be added (or suggest others)! Meant to be inclusive of many disciplines, methods, interaction types, and types of interacting agents: go.bsky.app/44VAEhU

SANS abstract submission deadline now extended to December 30th! Submit here: socialaffectiveneuro.org/abstract-sub...

New paper from @beausievers.bsky.social & me, now out in SCAN! "Deep social neuroscience: The promise and peril of using artificial neural networks to study the social brain" Open access link🔓: doi.org/10.1093/scan...

I see a lot of psych/neuro researchers look at neural nets and go “huh… cool… better not mess this up… better to not even try lol” We wrote this paper to share “building blocks” for thinking about neural nets: what they can and can’t do, their benefits and risks bsky.app/profile/mark...

New paper at Nature Communications from me & @dianatamir.bsky.social! "Neural representations of situations and mental states are composed of sums of representations of the actions they afford" www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New paper demonstrating the hidden cost of receiving favors led by Xiaoxue Gao with @eshjolly.bsky.social, Hongbo Yu, Huiying Liu, & Xiaolin Zhou. We demonstrate that brain patterns of emotional states can be integrated with economic utility models to predict reciprocity behavior bit.ly/41Pm7O2.

There are big changes happening at Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, our field's flagship journal and SANS conference sponsor. It's remarkable how far things have come over the years, and the future is looking bright.
