Colleges have until midnight tonight to comply with ED’s Dear Colleague Letter. Some have proactively stopped all DEI activities, others are in wait & see mode. Many underresourced colleges don’t have in-house legal teams to assess their risk by the deadline. www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

Without a clear definition of "DEI" how can colleges comply with mandates to eliminate it from all activities, programs, courses and hiring processes? @ryanequinn.bsky.social reports www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

NEW: Three days before ED's deadline for colleges to be in compliance with its Feb 14 Dear Colleague Letter, the AFT and ASA have filed a lawsuit to block the guidance. Now all eyes are on the court to see if the judge will issue an injunction www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

we are about to literally step back in time decades ditto to what Dr. @taylorodle.bsky.social said

BREAKING: A vocal critic of the Biden administration will oversee the nation’s colleges and universities, according to a document obtained by Inside Higher Ed. @jessicablake.bsky.social reports www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

A federal judge blocked the NIH administration from carrying out a plan to cap payments for costs indirectly related to research after a coalition of 22 Democratic attorneys general challenged the policy in a lawsuit filed Monday morning. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

NEW: Effective Monday, the NIH is planning to cap funding of indirect costs at 15% of all grants, down from the average of 27-28%. The change means that colleges and universities are on the hook for millions of dollars. #academicsky www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

WaPo, WSJ reports and IHE sources say Trump is preparing an EO to dismantle ED. @jessicablake.bsky.social has more. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

A federal judge has blocked the Trump team's plan to pause federal funding for grants and loans until Monday. Here's what the order would mean for #highered and how the sector responded on a day of chaos and confusion. By @jessicablake.bsky.social www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Education department statement, for those who asked for more info (my colleagues are doing more reporting on some of this): “The funding pause directed by the January 27, 2025 OMB memorandum only applies to discretionary grants at the Department of Education." 1/3

BREAKING: The Department of Education has confirmed that the federal spending pause does *not* affect Pell grants or student loans. You will get the money. Story coming shortly. 1/2

The pause in funding and other processes at NIH and NSF seems to violate the Impoundment Control Act. University presidents spanning red and blue states (R1 especially) need to coalesce. They have standing, collectively, to push back hard via their Congressional representatives (of both parties).

The NSF said it cancelled review panels “to make the best use of everyone’s time... as we continue to develop guidance to ensure compliance with the recent executive orders.”https://www.insidehighered.com/news/government/science-research-policy/2025/01/28/nsf-cancels-grant-reviews-comply-trump-eos

Trumps EO against DEI doesn't change federal law and is subject to lawsuits, but DEI advocates are concerned that institutions will respond with preemptive compliance. We've seen many already do so, eg: U of Michigan. Read more from @jessicablake.bsky.social www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Here's our QuickTake on the Laken Relay act that has just passed the House and is on its way to Trump's desk. Immigration policy experts say the bill could have consequences for international students applying to study in the U.S. www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-t...

Miguel Cardona has left the building. Linda McMahon hasn't been confirmed by the Senate yet. So who is running the Education Department right now? @jessicablake.bsky.social reports www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

@byjoshmoody.bsky.social and @liamknox.bsky.social trawled the anti-trust lawsuit against the 568 President Group institutions to find evidence that some had admitted certain students based on family wealth or connections, regardless of their qualifications www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

I got this wrong. Schwinn is going to be Deputy Ed Secretary, not Education Department Undersecretary. She'll have far less influence over higher ed policy as Deputy Secretary. Sorry.

Doug Shapiro, National Student Clearinghouse's executive director, says the methodological error that resulted in the center saying first-year enrollments had fallen 5% from 2023 to 2024 has been present since 2020. @liamknox.bsky.social reports www.insidehighered.com/news/admissi...

BREAKING: A federal district judge in Kentucky tossed out President Biden’s overhaul of Title IX regs, ruling Thursday that they exceeded the department’s statutory authority and violated the U.S. Constitution. #highered www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

A new report from Temple University’s Hope Center for Student Basic Needs argues that the ED should issue guidance—and eventually develop regulations—for how to more accurately calculate cost of attendance. Thoughts? #highered #higheredsky #academicsky www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

Higher education is intertwined with, not separate from, the institutions being challenged. Re-upping this piece I wrote for @insidehighered two years ago. We cannot find work-arounds, but rather must lead for our sector to deliver on its democratic promises. www.insidehighered.com/advice/2023/...

@liamknox.bsky.social sat down the Virginia Foxx in her last days as chair of the House Ed & Workforce Committee. She says she's not trying to antagonize colleges. "I’m just trying to get them to understand that they’ve been on a gravy train for a long time." www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

I'm really looking forward to this! And to seeing what college presidents tell us in our annual survey which should be out in the field this week 👀

There were no shortage of higher ed news stories this year. From Claudine Gay’s resignation to Joe Gow’s academic freedom, from protests and Project 2025 to FAFSA and finances, it was a defining year. Here’s a look back at the major events of 2024 www.insidehighered.com/news/institu...
