The first polio outbreak in the US occurred in the Otter Creek Valley of Vermont in 1894. Dr. Charles Caverly wrote up 132 cases, and noted an overall mortality of 14%. Many deaths were due to encephalitis, a now-forgotten feature of this once-dreaded disease 🧵 #IDSky
