Anyone want to go halves on that academic daydream bakery/bookshop/pet rescue 🥐 A post-PhD fellowship at £23k is insane. #AcademicSky #Skystorians

Thanks to those who have followed us this week. Our channel will provide you with updates on the Society's work to support and advocate for history and historians, as well as the activity of other Uk / RoW organisations who do likewise. They include 120+ networks in our Starter Pack bit.ly/4gLVuj7

Cuts to the Arts and Humanities have been going on for years in the UK. Several great departments were closed down. But in most places, the erosion was more gradual. /1

As Canada and the U.S. enter a trade war after spending decades as friends, neighbours and allies … I want to tell everyone a story about 9/11 Years ago I was asked to go to a Canadian college to see a workshop for a musical about 9/11. I scoffed. A musical about what now? 🧵

If 1000 job losses were announced in one day for another industry, it would make the top headlines. This one is going to take people by surprise with huge impacts on other sectors, cities, regions, life plans...

This quote is beyond disgusting. I’m telling you it’s okay to reject all of this on principle. We need our principles, our firm commitment to using our human brains to write history. Especially now when all of the things we care about are on the line.

45 mins into a briefing on applying for fellowships *on my day off* and they casually mention the college will only support 8 applications. There are +120 people in this meeting, and it's just one of two.

It's time for the Royal Society to revoke Elon's fellowship. Surely Nazi salutes are against the Code of Conduct? @deevybee.bsky.social's blogpost from Nov last year is evergreen ⬇️ deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/11/why-...

Can’t be repeated often enough ‘The UK’s creative industries are vital to the economy. Valued at £124bn, they are worth more than the life sciences, aerospace and automotive industries combined. Arts and culture alone contribute an impressive £34.6bn.’ on.ft.com/42hzVmL

Passed by this tree on the way home yesterday and had to go back today to see if I'd imagined it Can any folk/occult #skystorians please explain why it's so unsettling. I don't understand why, but I don't like it 🗃

The fragile power of archives.... Well done to those who grabbed those files and get them in a secure spot.

Something I should have added is that WW1/WW2 naval warfare is often HMS Fluffy Kitten vs the Ripper Von Mürderboat. With the Von Mürderboat either losing or coming away needing serious emotional and physical support. Never judge a Royal Navy vessel by her name. (Unless it's a Tribal Class)

Thanks to the 1,600 people and organisations who responded to the UK Ministry of Justice’s proposals on the retention of wills. Good news: The UK Government has determined not to proceed with any reforms that involve the destruction of original wills Read in full here: www.gov.uk/government/c...

As we head into 2025, I'll be sharing 25 MEDICAL HISTORY OBJECTS starting with... #1) 5,000-year-old prosthetic eye made of bitumen paste with lines radiating out from iris. Worn by a 6’ tall woman (possibly a priestess), found near the city of Zabol in Iran. The eye would have been painted gold.

OK here's the film! Elsie Knocker & Mairi Chisholm treating a Belgian casualty immediately behind the front line at Ramscapelle, 11 September 1917. Pioneering the rapid treatment of wounded in the front line, they were shelled out of their aid posts 3 times. #FWW #WW1 www.iwm.org.uk/collections/...

Field Post Cards were used by the French and British armies during the First World War to enable troops to send messages home without censorship. They were only permitted to delete what didn't apply but at Christmas they could add a standard message.

First World War Christmas, number 20: ‘With a Hearty Greeting’. In 1914, Cadburys, a Quaker company, committed to sending boxes of chocolate to wounded soldiers in hospital. Initially sent in tins, card boxes were later sent. Cadburys otherwise refused to supply the military on ethical grounds

All I want is a cottage in the Scottish Highlands, a raging snowstorm, and Agatha Christie novel, a crackling fire, a kettle on the stove, and a basket of emotional support pastries.
