Love seeing birds drink from knotholes in trees. That's your secret water, buddy

I’m obsessed with this embroidery! Zoom in!

Mallory, a Luther College student (biology / anthropology) made this amazing nod to the white rabbits in the Southern Reach novels.

Science books can be fun and this one is!

PLEASE don’t buy into Amazon’s booksale this week. They are intentionally trying to eat into profits from Indie Bookstore Day this weekend, a really important annual event for our important community institutions. Check out your local fave or bookshop.org.

Hey, Portland! Powell's Hawthorne and Steeplejack are hosting "A Book and a Beer with Jeff VanderMeer" on May 18. See the link for tickets, starting April 22. www.eventbrite.com/e/a-book-and...

This remains one of my favorite landscape photos I've taken. The path along the loch up through the heath towards the misty cliffs was incredibly enticing.

"That mallard meant nothing to me!" Wood duck at Oaks Bottom.

Bird art I captured.

When you don't know if you are hallucinating or not.

You’ll usually spot Great Blue Herons hunting solo - but when it’s nesting time, it’s a full-on gathering! These majestic birds form massive colonies called rookeries, sometimes with up to 100 nesting pairs! Why? There’s safety in numbers, better chances at finding a mate, and shared resources.

Closing in on finishing The Birds That Audubon Missed by Kenn Kaufman. It’s fantastic, I highly recommend to all bird nerds. Also here’s a six word summary: “Trust me, bro” - John James Audubon, 1785(?)-1851

Around Portland today, birding with @sarahlovesbirds.bsky.social. A beautiful day, with wildlife abundant and foraging.

i want more art. i want more conversation, constellations. i want more time with trees. i want more of my own heart. more pasta shapes! and the shapes of song! i want paintings so huge we have to build a new space. i want tiny paintings only baby pigeons can properly appreciate

Our first Lights Out Alert is tonight (4/14): An estimated 4.1 million birds will be migrating over Oregon skies! ✨ Every light turned off reduces the risk of window collisions and keeps their journey on track. Help them travel safely by turning off all unnecessary lights from 11 p.m. to dawn.

Kinda loved this kingfisher video, part of which is a little like if the Brothers Quay were wholesome, not creepy. youtu.be/AnxhH9fgrgY?...

Color and texture around PDX. Because birds are hard to photograph with your phone.

"De-extinction" is a marketing term, those "dire wolves" are designer dogs, and extinction is still forever. conservationworks.substack.com/i/160455290/...

You can now submit written comments and sign-up to give in-person testimony on our appeal case before City Council. City Council members will decide whether or not to uphold the approval of PGE's application, which would cut nearly 5 acres of trees in Forest Park. 1/2

This is disgusting Space X has already put a migratory bird hotspot in jeopardy on the Texas coast. The company has no ethical or moral compass to speak of. www.reuters.com/technology/s...

As usual, Saimi is right about all of this. Most of us can do better.

Tufted Puffins are officially back! The first ones have been spotted at Haystack Rock. Given that these birds have declined by more than 80% in Oregon over the last few decades, we want them to get all the attention they can. Help us spread the word, and head out there to see them for yourself.

I have a bunch more followers than the last time I asked, so ... can anyone help solve my ongoing ornithological mystery? Are these Carnaby's or Baudin's cockatoos? I found them in a place where the species' ranges overlap and I feel like the bill is right for Baudin's, but I wouldn't swear to it.

The appeal hearing on PGE's Harborton Reliability Project will be held next week on Thursday, April 17th at Portland City Hall at 2pm. We hope you will join us in person or submit testimony in advance to defend Forest Park. More details: forestparkconservancy.org/the-appeal-h...

This virtual event is going to be awesome! Pretty sure I will never misidentify a flycatcher ever again! 😆 @cintylee.bsky.social #birds 🪶 birdallianceoregon.org/event/nature...

If you find the Ponderosa Pine this puzzle piece fits into, you get to pet a woodpecker. Terms and conditions may apply.

Thanks for the concern about the Cheezit trap, you guys. There was a lot of weird stuff around there, but I think it was the ribcage (not pictured) that convinced me to hold out and not eat the Cheezits. 🪤 🦴
