If you are interested in #AI, #Innovation, #Science, & #Metascience, please apply for up to £260,000 to bring your #research to SPRU! www.ukri.org/opportunity/...

We’re excited to launch our new Campaign for Social Science hub which showcases research & evidence-based insights from the social sciences on how the UK might address its challenges around growth & productivity. Explore the good growth hub ➡️

Sounds like Govt recognises it can’t hold the line on its original proposals for AI / copyright but isn’t really sure what to do instead www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

We have three #Metascience projects live at SPRU at Sussex. We would be delighted to host scholars.

Has anyone recently taught/designed a course marrying the themes of populism, declining trust in institutions, oligarchy, and democratic decline? (I am thinking USA, but comparison/international is good too.) If so, let me know. I’d love to see a syllabus for some inspiration for a potential course.

Someone please explain: I needed a Notary Public to witness my signature. In the US, this can be done by a bank manager or even pharmacist, for cheap ($2.50) or free; states can cap prices. In the UK, this cost £240! They charged per page, non-negotiable. How can this be? Disruption required.

I think Wordle should just go the way of the crossword, and just time how long it takes me to get the 4.🤦

Creative industries protest against UK plan about AI and copyright - on.ft.com/41hZdPJ via @FT Opt-out should be for organ donation, not creative products.

Do any U.S. universities give professors credit--for tenure or promotion--for getting patents? If so, I'd love to hear more about the polices/details. Thanks in advance!

On the cutting room floor is the bit where the host introduced their interview series, The Interview, and I asked how long it took to come up with the name. Anyway, here’s me talking about birds and science and burnout and moving through the world. The photo’s nice! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Two Weeks In The Death Spiral Of Cardiff University, by an anonymous academic. This is truly shocking read. The Cardiff executive board should hang their heads in shame. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

Listen, university research isn’t perfect, but it is absolutely astonishing to me that anyone believes that the way to balance a federal budget is to cut spending on the folks who get paid a smidge more than minimum wage to bring us things like computing, clean air, and the cure for cancer.

Excited to share a new paper in @nature.com (www.nature.com/articles/s41...) We show how a change from five-star ratings to thumbs up/down eliminated a race gap in worker ratings and income Sometimes the right solution is the simple one w/ @decelles.bsky.social, Demetrius Humes, Sora Jun

Am I the only person who starts singing Gaga's "Disease", and it slips into "Judas"? Many of her songs are self-referential, but I've made this mistake more than a few times...

The Metascience Alliance is launching at #Metascience2025! This new cross-sector network is building collaboration to better understand & improve the research system. We want your input! Here's how to get involved (🧵)

Ill & trying to prep, I bring you a new season of "Slides from the Sofa"! First edition, #LoveIsBlind8. Am I right that the EP for this is the basis for "Unreal"? (Terrific series, btw.) Once again, none of these people makes you care about them. Did they fire all of the set psychologists?

Today is the first day of the year that my dog's favorite corner has had sunshine. She is so happy. Spring is coming!

Far be it from me to complain, but this was an 8 page paper. It had a single R&R which took 6 days.

Ok sociology, what do you think are genuine breakthroughs that our field has made. Contributions that might convince skeptical but sympathetic *academics* (not the public) of the value of our field? I'll brainstorm some of mine in the thread - I treat sociology very broadly

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

We'd like to invite you to FT Alphaville’s Art of the Chart show. Really! On 27 February we'll be taking over St Bartholomew-the-Great – London's oldest parish church – and displaying a series of charts so wondrous they deserve to be framed and hung in the Louvre. www.ft.com/content/a970...

Scientists, given more time and flexibility, often stumble upon unexpected discoveries—like Alexander Fleming, who saw a mould had killed the bacteria he was growing, paving the way for antibiotics. Recent study analysed such findings—more of them than you'd expect. 👉 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Data viz folks: we’ve been building community for years, but what defines our field? I’m on a quest to make a history of data viz and want your input! As the EOs and orders keep coming, I keep thinking of the exhibit in the Berlin Jewish Museum that displays the 962 anti-Jewish laws and policies in order as they came down. These kinds of drumbeats are designed not just to oppress but to normalize oppression. www.jmberlin.de/en/jmb-journ...

#AcademicSky #EconSky Say you need #Factiva to collect data for your #research project, but your university doesn't have access. What is the next best alternative? Or, is there a way to pay for access? A student summer project is the most urgent need, but will be an ongoing issue...
