I think I can explain this. As long as I've been following US politics, everyone involved in public discourse has obeyed Murc's Law: Dems are the only ones with agency, the only ones making choices for which they are accountable; the right merely reacts, is driven to its behavior by the left.

🙃

making an LLM deliberately bad at being a code assistant also makes it a nazi, because all good and all bad things are correlated with each other

i mean that's really interesting and everything but this ideology is common among the money guys and not among the people who actually do the work

i have once again been sentenced to the brain gulag

In 1980, Atari held a Space Invaders Championship with 10k participants, one of the first video competitions ever held, and it was won by a trans woman, Rebecca Heineman, who would later become one of the founders of Interplay and then work on companies like EA, Microsoft and Sony

Besides everything else, an absurd misapprehension of the political environment by the far right. The whole point of Bostock v. Clayton County is that you can't fire LGBTQ people for their identities. Trying to deny jobs to people systematically is extremely unpopular.

I feel like media literacy would improve by like 65% if we all agreed “the villain has a motive” doesn’t mean “the villain was right.”

We are just fucked beyond belief.

They’re not called Rare Earth Metals because they’re scarce, but because as a group of elements they took a long time to isolate. It’s an antiquated English use of rare meaning “widely distributed or isolated” that died in Victorian times.

once again the number of trans kids prescribed puberty blockers every year is less than half the annual number of child marriages where one person (almost always a man) is old enough that it’d be rape if not for child marriage carve outs

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

HOW COOL IS THIS? In preclinical studies, Stanford scientists discovered that a harmless skin bacterium triggers a powerful immune response. By tweaking a bacterial protein, they developed a topical NEEDLE-FREE vaccine, training the immune system to fight diseases like tetanus and diphtheria! 🧪🧵⬇️

A lot of the inefficiencies in government come from efforts to make it *leaner*: micromanaging workers in the name of eliminating waste, withholding the perks and salaries that they could expect at an equivalent private sector job, etc

I’ve said it before but a lot of people who are very smug about their contempt for “liberals” actually have just mistaken “liberals” for “Garfield creator Jim Davis.”

My kingdom for someone who will stand up and said “diversity is hard work, but we don’t have any other choice, so let’s roll our sleeves up and get to work figuring out how we can build peace with each other rather than fear and hate.”

I remember when Trump was elected in 2016, there was a common joke that he was the “First low info voter President” you’re definitely getting that vibe a lot more this time around though. It’s like President Grandpa is appointing the only people he knows: FOX news personalities.

The society which scorns excellence in bureaucracy as a humble activity & tolerates shoddiness in executive leadership because it is an exalted activity will have neither good bureaucracy nor good executive leadership

Anti-migration, anti-globalization leftism is dead at the scene of the ascendant far right. Surprise!

I’ve assembled a rag tag team of rivals composed of rough around the edges misfits for a vital mission. It’s going horribly, they can’t work together well and professionalism is sorely lacking, what the hell was I thinking

Measles are contagious. Measles cause 1 in 4 people to be hospitalized. Measles can be deadly especially in children. Measles can cause blindness & deafness. Measles can cause brain damage yrs later. Measles can cause "immune amnesia". Measles are preventable with MMR vaccine. #medsky #IDsky 🛟 😷🧪

‘Venture capital is killing more value than it creates,' author and tech activist Catherine Bracy argues in a new book, World Eaters. Silicon Valley needs to focus more on solving real-world problems and less on fast profit, she says.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

The attacks on DEI are a pretext for a much more radical agenda of reversing the gains of the civil rights movement, an objective the Trump administration is pursuing with zeal. A Great Resegregation. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Coming around to the view that a certain kind of narcissist simply needs Musk to be a genius rather than a fraud, because they want to believe there’s a hereditary Brahmin class of accomplished, beautiful minds—and that they’re a part of that class.

the literal exact same VCs who turned hard to trump in 2024 bought and owned Sinema

one thing that does irritate me a little about senior academics complaining about research integrity, p-hacking, etc. (concerns that I totally agree with) is like, I wanna see how many manuscripts with null results you've recommended for publication as reviewer/editor.

The NYT does this exact move--presenting someone active in Republican politics as just a regular voter--enough times that it cant be considered an accident. Its part of their MO of laundering GOP talking points to try & help them win.

I still can't get over how ruining our relationship with Canada never came up during the campaign but is apparently now a flagship issue for the WH because ???

Putting a face to what you read in the news. Until last Friday, I served our nation working as a Research Ecologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS). As a federal scientist, I provided robust, defensible information to support good decisions in natural resource management.

Don’t make me tap the sign (cc RFK Jr)

In many ways it's fitting that the showdown between monarchy and democracy ends up being over NYC congestion pricing. Cities are where the power of kings were first challenged, and few things are more fundamental to government than control of public space. The cameras are staying on!

This is exactly how Hitler talked. It's not even a comparison or analogy, as people claim. It's a direct connection in ideology as well as a similar approach to governance and relationship to democracy. This needs to be how we talk about it. They are the ideological descendants of Hitler.

In case you're wondering how a goddamn ALABAMAN grand jury decided to suggest closing a police dept, it's because the cops were drug dealers getting high on their own supply, until one of them died overdosing on a mix of "fentanyl, gabapentin, diazepam, amphetamine, carisoprodol and methocarbamol."

the “make america healthy again” agenda appears to be an elaborate op conjured up by sentient strains of listeria and salmonella www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

Wrote about how the yellow star led to increased sympathy for Jews in Germany. atrocity and discrimination wasn't popular...but that didn't stop the genocide. www.everythingishorrible.net/p/atrocities...

It is always important to remember that the American left is AOC, not randos online. That said, the randos online have so far predictably proven themselves predictably useless in opposing an actual hyperacceleration of imperialist activity by their government

"the sin of empathy" is an expansion of a CREC doctrine first expounded in a short work called "your eye shall not pity," which argues for death camps for gay Americans
