Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus malvae) had its worst year on record in the UK in 2024. It numbers at @ukbms.bsky.social monitored sites have been below average now in 20 of the last 25 years. Since 1976, its population has decreased by 49% (πŸ“·Mark Searle)

Another widespread & common butterfly that is now in long-term decline (-30% since 1976) in the UK after a disastrous, worst-on-record year in 2024 is Large Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanus) www.ukbms.org (πŸ“·Mark Searle)

One of the big shocks of last year’s UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme results was that, after its worst year on record in 2024 and a run of six below average years, Green-veined White (Pieris napi) is now in long-term decline. Numbers have dropped 28% at monitored sites since 1976.

Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) is another species that had its worst year on record in the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme results for 2024. It’s also another widespread & common species that’s in serious long-term decline: -44% UK trend since 1976 (incl Eng -41%, Scotland -51%, Wales -55%)

Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene) is really struggling in the UK, having lost almost three-quarters of its population since 1976 (72% decrease). Its numbers have been below average in 25 of the last 27 yrs and it had its worst year on record in 2024 at UKBMS sites. (πŸ“·Mark Searle)
