🤦🏽‍♀️ The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has now set its sights on cutting foreign subawards, with a new policy effective immediately. 🚨 NIH issued a major update yesterday. 🚦Foreign sub-awards can no longer be included under parent NIH awards starting September 30, 2025. 🧵

It's May, so it's my obligation as a stroke survivor to remind you all to know the symptoms - face drooping, arm weakness and speech difficulties are common. But I had none of them. So also look out for a severe unexplained headache, trouble walking or seeing, or numbness, and seek treatment fast.

Everything sucks, but I'm finally figuring out how to do eka pada koundinyasa I and II and that has me feeling like I can defy gravity.

Our full letter, submitted to the Senate Committee on Appropriations, details alarming developments and the need to protect the integrity of biomedical research and public health, while urging policymakers to take decisive action. Read the letter here: www.treatmentactiongroup.org/letter/heari...

I guess no one fails completely in the Trump Administration. You just get to keep failing over and over again in whatever position you're assigned to next...

Bikini Kill changed my life.

The new @who.int guideline on preventing early pregnancy and poor reproductive outcomes among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries is excellent. Very strong, evidence-based recommendations on ensuring that adolescents have both agency and access to critical education and services.

Under the Impoundment Control Act (ICA), the Administration can report a rescission (a proposal to cancel funds Congress has explicitly directed to be spent) to Congress. Once reported, it's up to Congress to say yes or no. Our representatives need to say NO. open.substack.com/pub/ninaschw...

Pretty sure it's not normal that every day I check the official White House schedule to see if there are going to be more executive orders or if we get a reprieve for another day...

Actually, WPS has been broadly adopted by militaries because it makes them more effective - Baltic states and Eastern Europe have particularly embraced WPS - NATO has a WPS strategy - Middle Eastern states have adapted WPS somewhat, but use it regularly

“There is a surprising lack of data comparing buprenorphine—the most common treatment for opioid use disorder—with no treatment. We found that the benefits of treatment were profound, substantially reducing risk of preterm birth and severe maternal morbidity.” - @stephenwpatrick.bsky.social

This is a heart-wrenching example of the impossible situations young pregnant Missourians face. Barriers to abortion, punished for pregnancy, and harassed for parenting. missouriindependent.com/2025/04/28/m...

Ok I’m impressed

This looks really interesting.

NEW — I wrote about Beker Rengifo, a Montana resident from Venezuela who was taken by ICE on Thursday after a routine traffic stop, and how local law enforcement is working with the feds to ensnare people with legal status.

Good.

Florida wants to take away minors' right to consent to STD treatment without a parents' approval Seems like a surefire way to keep teens from getting treated for STDs reason.com/2025/04/23/w...

It’s gorgeous today and so I’m working on our deck and just noticed a pair of very chatty house wrens building a nest in a gourd we put out many years ago. Soaking in the loveliness of it all.

I can count on exactly zero fingers the things the Trump administration has done that would actually benefit women, while I'd need multiple hands to count the things that will damage our health and wellbeing for decades to come. This is such a massive, massive loss.

This is a terrible terrible destructive decision. These sorts of long running research programmes take decades to build and their insights accumulate over decades too - the longer they run, the more valuable they become. This is knowledge vandalism. Nothing new and shiny can replace it.

FWIW, we've been studying the nationalist pronatalism push for several years now. And it's powerfully driven by what you'd expect: patriarchal gender ideology, perceptions that Whites & Christians are under threat, & Christian nationalism. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Science and data nerds & other comrades, Are any of the amazing trackers of cancelled research awards tracking cancellation of U.S. funding for clinical trials and other research *outside* the U.S.? thank you in advance ❤️ #StandUpForScience #ScienceUnderAttack

Child marriage is not only a major risk factor for early pregnancy—it also increases risk of: ⚡️ Violence ⚡️ Dropping out of school ⚡️ Mental health conditions ⚡️ HIV/AIDS & other sexually transmitted infections Every girl deserves health, education & the ability to shape their future 🔗 bit.ly/4cIGwdf

High quality sex education prevents adolescent pregnancies & protects health. Evidence shows that young people are more likely to delay having sex – and if they do have sex, practice safer sex – when they are better informed about sexual health & their rights. 🔗 bit.ly/4cIGwdf

One of the best ways to kill a girl’s dreams, strip her of autonomy, and put her in place is making sure she gets pregnant early and can do nothing about it. Their opposition to sexuality education, contraception, and abortion and protection of child marriage all contributes to that project…

Now is a really good time to consider non-dairy milk alternatives, for your health (and also for the planet). There are so many to choose from! For your kids, Ripple kids and soy milk provide the nutrients that they would get from cow milk, like calcium, fat, and protein.

And I want to clarify: I discovered the Substack literally because I clicked link on State homepage shortly after 11am. ONLY b/c it was linked directly from the homepage did I think it was anything remotely official or drafted by State. This is too easily faked otherwise. So, is it real Sec Rubio?

Following up on the reorganization of the US State Department, Rubio posted this org chart today. It's significantly different from the draft EO that was circulated last week, which he dismissed as "fake news." But still suggests a major overhaul of the organization and downgrades key positions.

I saw firsthand the impact of stop-work-orders/terminations at USAID & now Harvard. My new @NewYorker piece is on the serious implications for the lives of millions across the world and the US – including for my own family and very possibly your own. 🧵 www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

if you don't understand how this is reproductive violence, reproductive injustice...

All of the alarm bells are ringing loudly. This is unethical at best and downright dangerous at worst.

Breast cancer diagnoses rose by over 300% between 1973 and 1992. Was there a breast cancer epidemic?! NO. Mammograms were implemented for screening in 1976. PREVALENCE is a function of being able to correctly diagnose something. This is also about autism.

Simon Sikwese of the Malawi NGO Pakachere on the struggle to save HIV services following #PEPFAR & #USAID cuts: “So many of our clients are saying, ‘Why are you doing this to us?’ They built so much trust on us. They thought we could protect them.” Full article from Positively Aware ➡️ bit.ly/4cHwDfX

Fantastic news for Canadians who are experiencing infertility. This is the type of action that will support people to realize their reproductive rights and meet their fertility goals, whatever they may be.
