Autocrats always try to dismantle universities and other sites of free thought. But the current effort to destroy American institutions is also a reactionary backlash against real progress on racial justice in this country. Backlash only happens when movements are winning the argument.

Trump’s tariffs will send international trade into reverse this year, depressing global economic growth, the World Trade Organization…says it had previously expected goods trade to expand by a healthy 2.7% this year. As a result of Washington’s trade policy, it is now forecasting a 0.2% decline.

Steve Kerr: "I believe in academic freedom. I think it's crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to. And they should not be shaken down and told what to teach, what to say, by our government. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

“China's President Xi Jinping called for support for the international system centred around the United Nations, trade and the rule of law as he continued on a Southeast Asian tour amid a sharp deterioration in China-U.S. relations www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...

All roads lead to Russia

We really are going to hand global leadership to China, aren’t we 🤷‍♀️

Hands-Off Rally - Sat. 4/19 at the Old Capital in Iowa City. 11:30am-2pm. Come say Hi to me at the @JohnsonCountyDems table and give the constitution quiz wheel a spin. www.reddit.com/r/Iowa/comme...

Wth! Why are they targeting Koreans?

1. T is killing territorial integrity norms and threatening to invade Canada, Greenland, Mexico, & Panama. 2. T is killing the US economy in a self induced trade war and destroying 100,000 of thousands of federal jobs. 3. T is killing the rule of law by refusing to follow judicial decisions.

So proud of our Hawkeye PhD students on the market who all got placed in post docs or TT positions. Go Hawks!

The way Bukele was treated in the oval vs. Zelenskyy is all you need to know.

I keep thinking about how Trump 1.0 walked away from TPP (not to mention the Iran nuclear deal)

Also the Chinese make more credible commitments than the T administration 🤷‍♀️

What they are doing will destroy this country and so many opportunities for young people

😂😂😂

Go Iowans! And props to Grassley for continuing these town halls.

Infuriating to watch the Trump admin send people to rot in foreign gulags on bogus gang charges. Even more infuriating? The U.S. helped create the C. American gang crisis in the 1st place—with disastrous deportation policies in the ’90s that fueled violence & paved the way for leaders like Bukele.

New court filings by the government reveal a “calculated strategy” by Trump administration officials to evade transparency laws through the illegal destruction of government records re: SignalGate The CIA has archived "no messages of any substance."

WTF. When is this going to be one of our students...

Good. We need economic costs to be large for these horrific policies.

#Breaking: Canadian academics are being urged to avoid all non-essential travel to the U.S. amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on research and education along with fears of being turned away at the border.

Oh dear you’re going to want to read this. Looks like DOGErs were caught exfiltrating NLRB data, likely on unions, for private (seemingly Elony) use. This is must read. What we’ve all suspected. But now details. www.npr.org/2025/04/15/n...

Hegemonic suicide

Need to multiply that by at least 10 for T 2.0 🤷‍♀️

History is replete with examples of trade wars turning into shooting wars. FDR blocked exports of scrap metal, aviation fuel, raw materials such as iron, brass, copper and, finally, oil to Japan in response to the Japanese invasion of China. Japan struck back at Pearl Harbor. wapo.st/4igWdcG

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

Guess we won’t be needing as many diplomats after we commit hegemonic suicide

“Despite judge’s ruling” seems to be a major theme of the Trump regime.

File impeachment articles that are just direct quotes from the Declaration of Independence

Harvard redid its whole homepage to push back against the administration’s demands. I mean, this is just a website but I think it’s kind of a great PR move: www.harvard.edu

There's a legal term for when a state abducts you, detains you, and then conceals or denies the detention. Enforced disappearance. It's a human rights violation and a crime against humanity. That's what this is.
