New work from @portugueslab.bsky.social

Yes, many worrying things happening in science that should take priority in grabbing our attention - but we are worried precisely because scientific knowledge is worth creating. In that spirit, I am proud to highlight our latest @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social preprint! #neuroscience 🧪

I feel like I've seen snippets here and there but this is the complete list of snow plow names from Wichita you need tonight. Top 3 are clearly: 1. Ice fought the Thaw and the Thaw Won 2. Sweet Caro-brine 3. Plowabunga fight me www.wichita.gov/DocumentCent...

Huh. Definitely the sort of thing that makes you go “why didn’t I think of that?” Exciting to dig into this and futz around.

Extremely honored to receive this award from a Society I value, full of colleagues and friends. Dev Bio is well and alive, and we're proof of it! Dev Bio FTW

The umbrellas always get me on the snow days. #photography #nyc #winter #snow

Switching fields to #zebrafish? Wanting to become an expert in zebrafish research? Check-out the @mblscience.bsky.social 2025 Zebrafish Development & Genetics course – a fantastic opportunity to learn from leaders in the field! Application deadline: March 13 www.mbl.edu/education/ad...

This is a huge recognition from the community I love so much. Winning the Elizabeth D. Hay New Investigator Award is a big surprise and honor! This recognition belongs to my incredible mentors, colleagues, and the amazing people in my lab. 1(n) #DevelopmentalBiology #DevNeuro

Winter is definitely here! If you look real hard you'll see the Queensboro Bridge peeking through the trees. #photography #blackandwhite #nyc #winter

Snow atop the brownstones, and the streets are wet but clear as the city settles in to watch the Super Bowl. #photography #nyc #chryslerbuilding #chaninbuilding

The new NIH policy for indirect costs going forward is capped at 15%. This is forever going to alter the science ecosystem, upending and destroying a number of programs at universities across the country. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

I always marvel at the bits that hold up 270 Park Ave. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/270_Par... I mean, we all learned about how strong triangles are but seriously— 1400ft of skyscraper on this? #photography #blackandwhite #architecture #ayfkm #nyc

Navigating the slush this morning in style! #nyc #fashion #umbrella #photography

Dear All, I believe that this thread will become one of my most important contributions to the fly field (I hope I will make other contributions)! Here, I introduce the Soy Milk Machine Fly Food Method, a.k.a., DeepCook!#Drosophila#NewPI

Thanks to @schoppik.com and Celine Bellegarda for their nice Dispatch in @currentbiology.bsky.social about our recent paper on circuit control of hunting saccades. www.cell.com/current-biol...

I love how the buildings just disappear into negative space. Makes oncoming traffic less menacing. #photography #blackandwhite #nyc

I asked him for a portrait and he gave me the feather in his cap. Crushing that #nyc look! #photography #fashion #street

One exciting advance in motor control is new insights into different types of motor neurons & their roles in behavior. Charlie Dowell's work in the Bianco lab is an excellent example of such a discovery; reviewed here by @cbellegarda.bsky.social authors.elsevier.com/a/1kYNk3QW8S...

These #Pittsburgh sunrises lately...my goodness. They just don't stop. This morning's was even better than yesterday's, with the sky on FIRE just before the sun came up. The West End Bridge was the perfect place to capture it from as well.

The Vestrahorn mountain in Iceland, taken with a 10mm lens. On that day, some very interesting frozen patterns created some alien-like foregrounds.

Don’t look at the photo too closely as it’s a bit sketchy - the light was so difficult to deal with. But the three people on the headland were too good to ignore. It’s a view that is usually taken in the opposite direction from where they’re standing, but do you know where that is? 🤔

This town is for the birds. #photography #blackandwhite #nyc #birds #pigeons

Light always prevails! A short lived moment of breathtaking beauty as a granite outcrop in Patagonia's Torres del Paine catches fire, in the endless struggle between light and darkness. #bluesky #photography #landscape #travel #nature #scape #landscapephotography #naturephotography #sunset

Wildflowers, forest, glacier, and mountains… the kind of place I love ☺️. Peaceful scene from Alaska, captured just along the road out of Juneau. #bluesky #photography #landscape #mountains #nature #art #sunset

A black and gold scene from over weekend in #Pittsburgh just as the sun came out after a cloudy morning. The snow covered rivers were crazy to see, almost like there wasn’t a river there at all.

OK first, dopamine -- is there anything it can't do? Second, this horrifying preprint exists and now you know about it too! Seriously though, lovely new work from Elissa Hallem's lab: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Some really beautiful developmental biology looking at how to build an arthropod body. Legs for days! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Here's a fun one working out how ambient light turns on genes in non-neuronal tissues in worms, enhancing olfactory memory. Reminds me a lot of this gem of a paper from @mnitabach.bsky.social back in the day pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I am trying to make the world a more beautiful place with my photography. Is it helping? #goodness #aurora #northernlights #Oregon #pnw #landscapes #photography

New paper out in @currentbiology.bsky.social with the inestimable @kurtfraser.bsky.social and @janaklab.bsky.social. We think this work illuminates an important way the brain dynamically orchestrates motivation, and look forward to testing new hypotheses this inspires in disease models.
