The thing about this is that I don't give a damn about productivity metrics. I care about people living decent lives. And y'know who isn't mentioned in this one line summary, paper title, or abstract? People. No people, just their disembodied productivity and efficiency.

Are strobe lights THAT cool? Epileptic here, reflecting on how much time I spend at concerts buried in my shirt. Like, if they are THAT cool, fine, whatever, the shirt thing works. But... Are they? This is a real question.

Folks are relating the recent wave of plane (near-)crashes to Ministry for the Future. But I'd like to remind folks that the Children of Kali (the fictional group that takes out a bunch of planes) ALSO assassinates a bunch of oil executives and pro-oil politicians. 1/

🚨 Academia complaint Below is a list of the application material requirements for a *part-time* *one semester* position. All to bring home, at absolute most, a grand total of $1507 (before taxes). The academic job market is broken.

Um... Before even getting to the racism of the "lazy welfare people" narrative, can we please all agree that IF "lazy welfare people" did actually exist, they'd still be REAL people? (Quietly to self: And to think that I was recently contemplating our ability to extend empathy to plants...)

It's really weird to me that people are celebrating the German elections. Like, yes, the *worst* didn't happen. But that can't be our bar for celebration. I mean, these maps do not put me in any kind of celebratory mood. Source: www.reuters.com/graphics/GER...

Awesome vibes out there today. The thing about demonstrating against hate speech is that you always end up meeting lovely and inspiring people. Thanks to everyone who joined, said hi, or gave us a smile. We hope we brought you a bit of joy.

‘Zeg nee tegen haat’ klinkt nu in Tilburg op de plek waar John A. vorige week over ‘omvolking’ klaagde

Hey #Tilburg! We'll be at the train station 13:00-15:00 demonstrating against hate and discrimination in our community. Stop by for a moment and help spread some love (we even saved a sign for you!)

Following @infinitescream.bsky.social means that my feed is punctuated randomly by a de-contextualized "AAAAAAH". And that just feels right right now.

America really trying its hardest to fail an open book history test rn

Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

🚨Demonstration alert - Tilburg Looking for something to do on Saturday? Why not join some loving folks to say NO to hate in our communities! When white supremacists show up to spread their fear, we show up stronger and louder. Feb 22, 13:00 @ Tilburg station DM for more details

Thinking of going soft on us?! Nice. Read @schuylerlaparle.bsky.social ’s latest piece on the misogynistic goals of the term “hard” sciences—goals more achievable as the government “deletes” social scientific funding. open.substack.com/pub/metaphor...

This week's Metaphor Society post is a reflection on how we come to value academic disciplines differently. The "hardness" of precision, rationalism, and quantification has its place. But making a virtue of that "hardness" does more harm than good. open.substack.com/pub/metaphor...

I’ve heard some stories recently of people complying with fascists’ demands after they were threatened. As a violence researcher (and someone who has received a good deal of threats), everyone should know that complying will not save you. It only teaches the threatener that threats work.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

#FuckNazis in Tilburg. Two men holding a huge "white lives matter" sign in front of the Tilburg station. Most people just walking by, some people stopping to grab a flyer. It is everyone's responsibility to call them out and call them out loudly. Yell. Every. Time. That's *your* freedom of speech.

One thing Democratic leadership could do right now is to name an alternate HHS secretary--someone to provide ongoing public updates and health information. And do it for other departments too. Start showing voters what a Democratic government would look like--press conferences, speeches, all of it.

Why think of recent US research funding news as a dismantling of academic research rather than an inevitable course correction of an inherently conservative system? The state never has and never will want status-quo-questioning research. We nudged too far towards progress, and it's shoving back.

Well over 600 signatories now. Please keep the momentum going. Sign and share to show how much the wider scientific community is concerned by the Royal Society's silence over Musk's FRS. Members of the UK and international scientific community are all welcome to sign.

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

Physically sick. If you are not a white man content with conducting research under our white supremacist status quo, you are no longer welcome in academia (you never were really, we just pretended for a sec). In fact, academia would rather not acknowledge your existence.

This is a beautiful and sad farewell to the university and UEL from Ash Sharma - he asks, ‘I loved you, but did you love me? ’ The answer is sobering for us all. open.substack.com/pub/ashwanis...

Microplastics are this generation's lead crisis. We came SO CLOSE to wiping ourselves out with leaded, well, everything. If it wasn't for a few insistent scientists willing to look insane, we'd be long gone. As usual, there's a great Radiolab episode on it: radiolab.org/podcast/heav...
