I had the pleasure of visiting the construction site of the Rubin Telescope over the years. I was gobsmacked by the images. But, Rubin is not about single evocative images. It will image the entire sky every 3-4 nights, making an HD video of the universe as it evolves. THAT is the value of #NSF.🧪🔭

Science fiction & science all in one place! Come hear about astrophysics, planetary defence, and my musings of life beyond Earth! Oh, amazing celebrities, too! As a fan-run convention, you avoid the avalanche of sponsorships.🧪 www.shore-leave.com

Catching the sunset at the NSF funded Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 10 years ago today. Don’t let the Sun set on NSF-funded discovery. #NSF 🧪🔭

The footage from the parade in DC is chilling. Shades of the USSR and North Korea.

Williamsburg having a HUGE turnout! #nokings #nomorekings

Ready for Williamsburg. #nomorekings

A well-crafted news release with a pristine nut graf. Considering the amount of caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol my mother consumed while pregnant, I was probably born jonesing for an Irish coffee and pack of Camels. 🧪 www.newswise.com/articles/why...

For some reason, this song came to mind. youtu.be/HHhZF66C1Dc?...

And I just donated. Add your voice!

And it’s not “misinformation” or “inaccurate.” It’s lies and deception.

It’s the equivalent of trying to take a picture of a lightning bug on a Time Square marquee. The difference is, the license to operate a satellite requires they don’t broadcast at protected frequencies!!! FCC to the rescue?! Not bloody likely.

"A famous bon mot asserts, opinions are like assholes in that everyone has one. There is great wisdom in this but I would add that opinions differ significantly from assholes in that yours should be constantly and thoroughly examined." -- Tim Minchin

Congrats to Vera! The Nobel Prize should have been hers. Side fact, she called me to ask about a paper. Seems my number was one digit off. I geeked out… 🧪🔭

Yes, Phil. I share your sentiments.

I am furiously, flamingly, incandescently, *supernova-levels* of angry right now. Trump is trying to kill NASA science. And hoo boy, do I have something to say about it. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/trump-thre... 🔭 🧪

Happy Pride Month.

Pro-Life…styles of the Rich and Famous.

I devoted a good portion of my career to TMT. Though worthy, GMT will be one of many telescopes in Chile studying the southern skies. Without TMT, next generation astrophysics will miss out on 50% of the universe. 🧪🔭 www.science.org/content/arti...

The human nervous system is compelling evidence against intelligent design. Witness for the prosecution, me. 9 months of unrelenting hip, leg, groin, sciatic pain: injections, surgery, imaging to pinpoint the source: no idea. Fish-based pelvis and spine structure has no business walking upright. 🧪🩻⚕️

A really well-crafted science feature on new insights into food tolerance and infections: Informative, factual, engaging tangents, and a clear narrative with tempered speculation on future research. HT to @scifood.blog for flagging. medicalxpress.com/news/2025-05...

Have been considering AI of late. My conjecture: “Intelligence is programmable. Consciousness is emergent.” But emergent from what? Possibly collapsing wave functions on the quantum scale. Thoughts? 🧪

A worthy read (and worth following). Rob wields facts like a rapier to cut to the point. The "Dread Pirate Roberts" of science journalism. "This isn’t just about science. It’s about economics, public health, national security, and how well America competes globally." medium.com/wise-well/am...

Today I’m speaking at the Association for Psychological Science meeting in DC about communicating science to the public. I’ve been honing this talk for a decade, adding new insights and learning as I go. Two messages: Identify WITH your audience and precision is the enemy of understanding.

11 years ago today, I spent 2 weeks escorting a team from 60 Minutes around the Atacama Desert for a feature on the ALMA Telescope @thenrao.bsky.social. ALMA has since exceeded all expectations; For 75 years, NSF achieved wonders. Those days are over. I grieve. 🧪🔭 www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfFL...

I needed that today.

Smartwatch data, too?!? Time to ditch the Apple Watch.

Evocative.

“When Harley Was One” or AI can be an a-hole. Science can’t predict when AI goes from informative to misleading, wrong, or even dangerous. Is a proposed Jekyll-Hyde model of AI the secret “formula?” www.newswise.com/articles/new... 🧪

So I took a mental-health break from social media for a few weeks (moving into a new home, and all). I naively thought "it's got to get better!" Then Innovation Suicide Friday hit. 40 years of my life communicating the value of science. Time to show the true meaning of a "Mad Scientist!"

Nitrous oxide (aka laughing gas) provides wonderful relief from dental anxiety. New research also suggests it has quick, lasting benefits for those with treatment-resistant depression. Unless you’re Frank Booth in “Blue Velvet.” 🧪 @newswise.bsky.social www.newswise.com/articles/und...

We are a young species that evolved in a world where tribalism, fear of the unknown, and magical thinking proved valuable to survival. Come back in a few 100,000 years (a blink of the eye to deep time). If animals like us still survive, see if we’re gotten any better.

Chilling. While on my morning walk, I listened to @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social Everything is Tuberculosis, until I reached chapter 8 "Not a Person." Green's elegant prose and gentle voice amplified the chilling account of systemic racism and its brutal legacy of death by disease. Life changing. 🧪🩺

This is where Neil Armstrong and ‘Buzz’ Aldrin trained under simulated 1/6 gravity at NASA Langley. The “Gantry.” 🧪🔭

The “Moon Tree” planted at NASA Langley, dedicated today. The seed from which this tree grew was flown around the Moon on Artemis I. It joins the Moon Trees from seeds flown on Apollo 14. 🧪🔭
