After the success of our 2023 Imaging Cell Dynamics conference, we’ll be hosting a second #JCSImaging meeting in 2026, organised by @franbottanelli.bsky.social, @guijacquemet.bsky.social‬, @drmichaelway.bsky.social‬ & Giulia Zanetti. To register your interest: www.biologists.com/meetings/jcs...

Kicking off a week of sphingolipid biology @slbiology.bsky.social with the Dresden #lipidtime crowd 🤩🔥 @fedorovalab.bsky.social and @sciezgin.bsky.social

A few GlycoDraw-related highlights of the upcoming glycowork v1.6 update (dropping in a few weeks): - our very own rendering engine (GlycoDraw for the masses, thanks to glycorender!); - SNFG-gradients; - automated Alt text; - reverse-highlighting; - even more support for highly complex sequences

New paper out! Would you like to fluorescently label the plasma membrane in live, fixed or permeabilized cells? I tested different lipid structures and labelling approaches to decide what makes a good membrane labelling probe for such imaging experiments! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Specificity in glycosylation! Have you ever wondered why some glycosyltransferases recognize glycoproteins, some glycolipids, and some both? Together with @kmikolajczyk.bsky.social and @rkaczmarekdr.bsky.social, we try to answer that complicated question. #glycotime tinyurl.com/5b6kxhp3

Why are biological membranes asymmetric, with different lipids in the two bilayer leaflets? Discovered in the 70s, lipid asymmetry is linked to many cellular processes, but why the cell needs it is largely unclear. @pavelbarahtjan.bsky.social addresses this question: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

It’s #lipidtime. The authors capture oscillations in the abundance of different phospholipid species during the yeast cell cycle, suggesting regulation and interplay of phospholipid synthesis, membrane fluidity, and metabolic efficiency during cell division www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Groundbreaking study in Cell from @leventallab.bsky.social: phospholipid asymmetry is a defining feature of the plasma membrane and cholesterol fills the holes — major implications for how this membrane works. A #lipidtime must-read! www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

Come and work with us OOH @oxforddpag.bsky.social: ❤️ organoids to study 1) failing hearts and 2) metabolite signalling, with @novonordisk.bsky.social and wonderful colleagues 1) Andrew Lewis & Chris Toepfer @rdmoxford.bsky.social; 2) Yimon Aye @oxfordchemistry.bsky.social. Reach out if interested!

New PI born 💥 Jan Schlegel @jan-schlegel.bsky.social is soon starting his lab in Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Germany :) So proud to see him flying to new horizons with his limitless curiosity! You want to be part of his journey? He is looking for a PhD/Postdoc 👇 lnkd.in/er5NYXGv

1/8 Exciting new work with Agu @mangiarotti.bsky.social @mpici.bsky.social ! 🚀 Our latest study explores how lipid packing and cholesterol regulate the interaction of biomolecular condensates with membranes. It turns out, it’s not just about membrane phase. Packing is the key! 🧵👇 rdcu.be/eelLq

🚨New preprint: There's this overlooked phospholipid with 3 acyl tails called NAPE that is made during ischemia. We identified its interactome & found it regulates lactate flux, suggesting metabolic functions in response to hypoxia. Congrats to Dylan Chiu! doi.org/10.26434/che... #lipidtime #chembio

Proud to announce our latest work on malaria-derived EVs is live! Couldn’t have done it without Daniel Alfandari and the lab of Neta Regev-Rudzki. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

How is one dye #NileRed (NR) the sensor of both polarity and microviscosity? Sarkar et al. correlate spectral shifts and fluorophore orientations of single molecules of NR in Lo/Ld supported lipid bilayers PhysChemB: doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcb.4c07578 🔓 bioRxiv: doi.org/10.1101/2024.06.21.600028

📢 SAVE THE DATE: Sept 29 - Oct 1, 2025 and come to Berlin to the BIOMEMBRANE DAYS Excellent line of speakers and slots for contributed talks. Registration will open in Spring. biomembrane-days-2025.mpikg.mpg.de Organized by [email protected] Thomas Weikl and myself @mpici.bsky.social

New paper out 🎇 It has been 13 years since @owenlabuob.bsky.social and co. published a stellar protocol on how to measure membrane order with smart probes! Since then, there has been new dyes, imaging modes and biology! We wrote a protocol for Nature Protocols: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Amazing EU cofunded postdoc program at SciLifeLab! if you want to do your postdoc in cutting-edge molecular bioscience, check this out! And if interested in biophysics and applying with us, let us know ;)

Big first for our lab on Friday as Wesley became its first PhD graduate. Congrats Wesley and a big thanks to an amazing committee including @bengoult.bsky.social (opponent), @sciezgin.bsky.social , Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson, Catharina Hagerling and Daniel Engelbertsen.

🚨🚨🚨Come and join us at the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine- tenure track positions in broad areas of 1)basic research and 2)advanced therapy in regenerative medicine. 🚨Deadline Feb 10th. DM me if you have any questions lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/... lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/...

Thrilled to share our latest review paper, "Advanced Fluorescence Lifetime-Enhanced Multiplexed Nanoscopy of Cells", co-authored with @samratb.bsky.social, now published in Methods in Microscopy! 🚀✨ Check it out here: www.degruyter.com/document/doi... #FLIM #SMLM #FLPAINT #FLSMLM #MIETPAINT

New paper out💥 in Nano Letters @pubs.acs.org High throughput single particle profiler with simple confocal imaging. We used this new method to study protein-lipid interactions, drug membrane interactions and biophysics of small particles from human donors: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Made one of these for lipids, will update continuously. Please share and let me know who I've missed go.bsky.app/A27yZA6

New PI born 🎁 In case you are one of the few who doesn't know @pablo-carravilla.bsky.social , he is starting his lab in Bilbao! Having Pablo in the lab as postdoc was a true privilege! Vividly remembering the first time we discussed this (Fig 1a) and today when he is ready to be a leader (Fig 1b).

Shoutout to @alexeychizhik.bsky.social for producing a spectacular (back) cover image for the Advanced Materials issue in which our paper advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... will appear.

There are now 24 step-by-step guides, explaining how to create these ⬇️ data visualizations with R/ggplot2 - I hope this is a useful resource. Find them all here: joachimgoedhart.github.io/DataViz-prot...

Thanks EMBO for the support. It is a true pleasure to be part of this community. Looking forward to the next 4-years of great science and fun! www.embo.org/press-releas...
