It was generally another mild meteorological winter in Winnipeg, but much colder than last year. The worst cold snap was in February. Snowfall was around normal, but most of it fell in December. It was also windier than normal, tied 6th windiest winter since 1953.

A strong cold front will pass through southern Manitoba late tonight/early tomorrow. This will cause very strong winds and falling temperatures. Winter isn't ready to leave just yet!

As a member of the private sector in the weather enterprise, I want to emphasize that reducing support for national meteorological agencies is bad for business. Moreover, weather does not follow borders, so curtailing data collection in one country has global repercussions.

At this time of year, snow cover plays a big role in temperatures. You can see on today's satellite image that most of southern Manitoba has snow cover (white), but some dark patches are starting to peak through.

Most of southern Manitoba is back on the plus side of zero today! Winnipeg is currently sitting just below freezing, but should make it above zero later this afternoon.

Happy Flag Day!

The long-range forecast is now strongly suggesting a flip to warmer-than-normal temperatures for the last week of February. But, the Prairies will have to endure one more week of bitter cold before the pattern finally changes. Early next week will be especially frigid!

Snow on the way tomorrow - will continue into Thursday morning:

Today’s “high” in Winnipeg was -27.8 C, a true arctic air mass!

The core of the cold is centred over the eastern Prairies this morning (map at 9am central time). But the extreme cold is on the way out - a warming trend will begin to take hold tomorrow from west to east.

The low was -32.6 C in Winnipeg this morning with a minimum wind chill of -47 at 8 am. I'm pretty sure that is the lowest wind chill reading so far this winter. Believe it or not, this is the only -30 C day we've had this January (so far)! But there have been 4 days of -29 C.

This might be hard to believe, but today’s high temperature in Winnipeg will go down in the history books as +2 C. We were briefly in the warm sector of this system overnight, with the high reached at 3am. It’s been all downhill from there. #mbstorm

First time I’ve ever received one of these:

Conditions are at their worst for most of southern Manitoba right now due to the combination of new falling snow and very strong winds. Most major highways are now closed due to low visibility and slick roads.

Winter weather will return with vengeance tomorrow in southern Manitoba! A powerful cold front associated with an Alberta Clipper will sweep through the region. Light snow is expected, accompanied by very strong northwesterly winds. (1/2)

It was -28.5 C in Winnipeg yesterday morning. This afternoon is is +1.0 C. Quite a turn of events!

December ended warmer than normal and snowier than normal in Winnipeg. The mean temp was -10.2 C, which is 2.5 C warmer than normal. There was a total of 37 cm of snow, 8.5 cm more than the normal.

Manitoba Highway 75 is closed as of Monday, Dec 16 at 2:16 pm.

This may spoil the prospect of a white Christmas for many across North America!

It's shaping up to be a month of extremes on the Prairies. There has been plenty of cold and snow to start the month, but long-range forecasts are now suggesting the month will end on a warmer note! This forecast is for Dec 20-27.

It was another frigid night across southern Manitoba. Winnipeg had a low of -33.4 C this morning, which sets a new marker for coldest day of the winter so far. It also marks the first back-to-back -30 C days since Feb 2-3, 2023. #mbwx

Welcome to the arctic! Winnipeg recorded a low of -30.7 C this morning, the first -30 C day of this winter. Decent chance we hit -30 C again tonight before a warming trend begins for the weekend. #mbwx

An arctic cold front will push across southern Manitoba today, signalling a shift into very cold weather for Wednesday and Thursday. Some light, fluffy snow will precede the front, so expect some blowing snow later today as the front pushes through and winds pick up. #mbstorm

For those wondering, the @weatherlogics.bsky.social storm total snow measurement for Winnipeg was 18.6 cm up to 6am. It appears the north side of the side got less because a heavy band stalled over the southern part of the city yesterday evening. #mbstorm

I measured 15 cm of snow on the SE side of Winnipeg just before 9 PM. Snow is going to continue overnight, but it will tend to be lighter for the most part - there will be some heavy bursts, but they will not be as persistent. #mbstorm

More snow is on the way for Manitoba this weekend, potentially marking the biggest event of the "winter" so far for the Red River Valley and southeast. However, with a few days to go, a last-minute northward shift in the system could still alter the forecast.

A significant warm-up is on the way this weekend, with temperatures on Sat and Sun around or just above the freezing mark. However, it won’t last long, as another storm is expected to move through from Sun into Mon, bringing more snow and much colder temperatures early next week!

Freezing drizzle overnight may have helped to reduce blowing snow today by "crusting over" the snowpack. Nevertheless, it will be a nasty day, with strong winds, falling temperatures, and some blowing/drifting snow in open areas. #mbstorm

A brief band of heavy snow is pushing through Winnipeg right now. Once this heavy snow tapers off, watch out for freezing rain later today. Thanks to @weatherlogics users, we can see freezing rain has already occurred following this snow farther west: #mbstorm

Another punch of winter weather is on its way, starting tomorrow. A passing system will bring light snow to many areas, with heavier snowfall expected in the Interlake region and eastern Manitoba. However, the real challenges will arise as the system moves out tomorrow night.

It was the 2nd warmest fall on record in Winnipeg. As Julien points out, the late November cold snap is all that stood between us and 1st place:

The Manitoba lakes are starting to freeze over in response to the much colder air mass that has taken over the province. Unlike the much larger and deeper Great Lakes, the Manitoba lakes are very shallow and don't take long to freeze once colder weather arrives.

A total of 4 cm of snow fell in Winnipeg yesterday. There aren't any more significant storms on the horizon, but don't be surprised if there are frequent flurries as we shift into a colder weather pattern.
