The Unistellar citizen science program, a collaboration between the SETI Institute and Unistellar, had an impressive 2024 filled with groundbreaking discoveries. In a recent Q&A session, Franck and Lauren shared the program’s achievements and previewed what’s in store for 2025. 🧪

Onboard footage from US Navy Full Ship Shock Trials involving DDG-81 Winston S. Churchill: youtu.be/vxPTyJfTihk

I've made a number of videos using positional data from aircraft captured using ADS-B data - for example this story of a passenger landing a King Air after the pilot dies. youtu.be/D3MVTOnxCrc But there's an underlying technical story I want to share about the precision of this data.

Multichord observations of a Transneptunian object with several observations from @unistellar.bsky.social including 2 positive chords recorded by our citizen scientists. Bravo!

The US Forest Service AND The National Park Service once tried to use sonic booms to trigger avalanches.

How do you image shockwaves around an aircraft in flight? You need a light source that's well collimated.... like the sun.

Doing math on how big a spacecraft would be needed to divert 2024YR4 in 2028 so it would miss in 2032, according to Ed Lu at B612 the velocity uncertainty is 0.35m/s with a 2.3% chance of impact. That means there's roughly a .008m/s range in velocities which lead to an impact in 2032.

What happens when you suddenly realize the passenger jet you're flying is upside down.....

Firing NASA Ames Vertical Gun Range

I spent a day at NASA Ames Vertical Gun Range, and even after editing I still ended up with 50 minutes of video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5G9...

My phone is permanently set to vibrate, but for nostalgia I'm thinking I should setup a ringtone that sounds like GSM interfering with my computer speakers.

San Carlos airport will have no controllers because the company that won the contract to run it gave everyone a massive pay cut and they all quit. content.govdelivery.com/accounts/CAS...

Vulcan rocket launch at the Vulcan Gas Company in Austin

JUST IN: F-35 fighter jet crashes at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The pilot survived

Glad to get back in the air, the plane flies a whole lot better when the air temperature is lower.

That's my weekend sorted.

In October 1958 NASA had just assumed responsibility for a great deal of US spaceflight, and less than 2 weeks after founding they would launch Pioneer 1 towards the moon. There had been a previous attempt to launch this spacecraft design, but that had failed 79 seconds into launch.

I just posted my aircraft transit prediction code over at my patreon, it's not plug and play by any means, but here's some proof it works. www.patreon.com/scottmanley
