Now they’ve gotten rid of the US Institute of Peace, the African Development Foundation, and the presidential management fellowship (PMF).

Good one

For some of the most comprehensive USAID reporting yet, @timothypmurphy.bsky.social & I spoke to ~12 USAID workers about how Musk & Trump have screwed over FSOs, interrupted life-saving projects, & shattered the foundations of the entire humanitarian aid industry. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Now we’re talking.

With humanitarian aid in the news right now, here’s a guide for navigating conversations about its impact.

Just 1% of the U.S. federal budget goes to foreign aid.  This small investment has helped:  📉 Lower maternal mortality by 34%  🌍 Cut extreme poverty by 27%  💪 Decrease polio cases by 99%  ❤️ Save 25M lives through HIV/AIDS programs  🦟 Decrease malaria cases by 50%    Foreign aid funding saves lives.

New hashtag I like, #fuckelonald Like when we learn a new vital federal agency is being shut down, causing needless suffering, drama, and other annoying dumbfuckery.

New piece from @devex.com explaining the US foreign aid crisis: “They’ve effectively just taken away the U.S.’ ability to respond to a humanitarian emergency” www.devex.com/news/devex-n...

Cut off humanitarian aid, leave the UN Human Rights Council, tell Gazans they have to leave their land. This is, explicitly, ethnic cleansing. Send him and all his friends to the Hague

Shutting down #USAID and abandoning our partners and colleagues around the world is a recipe for enemy-making. This will jade millions of people in developing countries, it will be the final straw. They're done blaming trump, it's the American people's fault now, since he actually 🤮 won again.

Trump and Musk are recklessly and illegally dismantling USAID, an essential national security agency that saves lives, advances U.S. interests, and promotes peace.

Effects of foreign aid freezes: People will die. American aid will be unable to reach the most vulnerable populations, undoing decades of progress on health, security and human rights. This devastating blow risks worsening humanitarian crises, violence, conflict, and political instability.

Jesse Marks, senior advocate for the Middle East at the humanitarian organization Refugees International, told ABC News he's worried the stoppage of aid from USAID could put the Israel-Hamas ceasefire in jeopardy. #Gaza

"Soft power" is like the carrot, instead of the stick. You provide humanitarian aid not just because it saves lives, but because it gives you influence in that country. It's also just really good PR. So maybe that country's leaders will side with you over, say, Russia or China.

The data at USAID's ForeignAssistance dot gov was removed over the weekend, but it seems to be back (for now). As a backup, I've uploaded the data both as static CSV files and a queryable API - Details: andrewheiss.github.io/foreignassis... - API: foreignassistance-data.andrewheiss.com

The sheer injustice of the richest man in the world freezing humanitarian aid in the name of saving some money for the richest country in the world. apnews.com/article/usai... What is USAID? Explaining the US foreign aid agency and why Trump and Musk want to end it

U.S.A.I.D is a humanitarian relief agency providing health aid, war relief, and food security to impoverished nations. It has been in the crosshairs of Musk and isolationist conservatives that state it is a drain for the U.S. The dept. has a budget of $23 billion, less than 1% of the federal budget.

So many important programs are being abandoned right now. This only makes us enemies. And brings needless death and suffering. This is an own goal for the USA. #saveUSAID #usaidstopwork #elonsucks apple.news/AdmIThpu_RnS...

Rally in Support of U.S. Foreign Aid, Wednesday, February 5. peacecorpsworldwide.org/rally-in-sup...

Just because it is in plain sight does not mean it is not what it is: A hostile takeover of the U.S. government by an unelected and unfettered power monger. Believe what you see, do not see what you believe.

The #USAIDStopWork has created unnecessary chaos. As our community organizes, www.usaidstopwork.com was developed to provide two key elements: 1. Advocacy: a petition to gather supporters in one location and a script to contact members of Congress 2. Tracking job loss www.usaidstopwork.com

As the evolving situation around US foreign assistance remains uncertain, with a critical waiver for “life-saving humanitarian assistance” programs now issued, read @rachelbonnifield.bsky.social on what a smart US aid review would look like ⬇ bit.ly/42rHM1k

Hoping this means good things. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

@montereybayfc.bsky.social - why aren't you playing in the USOpen Cup this year? Was an incredibly special moment watching you beat the Earthquakes and **almost** take out reigning MLS Cup Holders LAFC in 2023, it's a shame we can't get the chance to see that again at Cardinale!

Yep! Grant-funded PhD students' entire income is at stake. Their tuition as well. And maybe also their health insurance. There are lots and lots of students who are funded on federal grants.

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.” Diary of Anne Frank January 13, 1943

I would like this comic I drew in 2017 to stop being relevant pleeeaaaaase

We could have had a real leader yet we are stuck with this FELON now.

New from me: Trump is a lame duck, an old, tired, easily manipulated one, whose vanity is a useful tool. Foreign leaders like Claudia Sheinbaum are right to mock him, and American elites should uncurl from the fetal position and get in on the fun.

links in the thread - thanks for posting this!

This is depressing... I served as a Peace Corps Vol. in Niger at the end of the 90's. Better time, at least in terms of no ISIS, Al Qaeda, etc. Always low on UNHDI. You could travel across the Sahel then. Now, part of Wagner client state trio w/Mali & Burkina. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Today is January 6, the anniversary of the felon/GOP’s violent insurrection trying to stop the peaceful transfer of power in the 2020 election! We remember 140 officers who were injured & those who lost their lives due to the attack on the Capitol! Hold all involved in the insurrection accountable!

The attack on our Capitol was an act of domestic terrorism—an unforgivable assault on America. Trump and his MAGA extremists betrayed us all, spitting on the sacred oath our Troops swore to defend and dishonoring the Constitution and the sacrifices of countless Americans.

White people are being weird in the comments everywhere, but that’s to be expected. I’m sharing because me, my editor, & my comrade @jennmjacksonphd.bsky.social are all included in this knockout list: www.huffpost.com/entry/empowe...
