Open access! The treaty of Verdun and much more besides… journals.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/index.php/fr...

For #FindsFriday a denier minted by independent Venice for circulation in the Frankish empire. Deus conserva Romanorum imperium (“may God preserve the Roman empire”) and Christe salva Venecias (“Christ, save Venice”). The Hermenches hoard dates it to the 820s/830s (Louis the Pious). 📷 my own

For #FindsFriday three of the objects in the fantastic gold hoard from Hoen in Norway: Scandinavian armring, Anglo-Saxon finger ring and Frankish (Carolingian) trefoil mount, made into a brooch. Photos: Kulturhistorisk Museum, CC BY-SA 4.0: no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoenska...

@francescatinti.bsky.social caught out the British Museum - for me it's the Bibliotheque nationale posting a denier of Charles the Bald, minted no earlier than 864, and describing it as an example of Charlemagne's coinage 😢

A lovely recent #viking find from Denmark - a folded Christiana religio denier of Louis the Pious, possibly folded to be destroyed or maybe to show the cross. Photo (one coin, four angles): Tobias Schwartz Leonhardt-Lindqvist

An amazing excavation in western France, on the Ile de Ré - Carolingian period burials with grave goods linked with Frisia, AS England and perhaps Scandinavia. www.inrap.fr/des-tombes-i...

More details of the Herstal excavations: agencewallonnedupatrimoine.be/news/grande-...

For #FindsFriday a rare Carolingian cut halfpenny in the name of Lothar I (840-855) from Barton upon Humber (Lincs.). It was undoubtedly owned by a Scandinavian, having been minted by Vikings in the Netherlands, halved by a Viking (Franks didn't do that) and brought to England by one.

My most common mistake is “I won’t make a note of that before I go to sleep, I’ll just remember it in the morning”

Excavations in Herstal, site of a Carolingian palace frequented by Pippin III and Charlemagne - traces of a chapel and around 40 graves being excavated. #medievalsky www.rtl.be/page-videos/...

Continuing the theme of today being Anskar’s Day, this bell was found in Hedeby/ Haithabu harbour and is dated to the right period for it perhaps having been the town’s first church bell. www.researchgate.net/figure/Bronz...

Today’s the day the Church remembers Anskar, who brought Christianity to the Vikings of Birka (my picture) and Hedeby. Fun fact from Wikipedia - he has a crater on the moon named after him!

Traces of a visit by Vikings. Stonework from the 9th-C Carolingian Abbey of Jumièges showing signs of burning; now in the Musée départemental des antiquités in Rouen. Photo my own

What @trixranderson.bsky.social did not show in her photo! 620 (beautifully illustrated) pages 😍🤩

🏛💰 News! A hoard of coins, containing 44 gold staters minted by British king Cunobelin, has been found in the Netherlands. The hoard's composition and dating suggest it could be the donative of a #Roman soldier involved in the AD 43 invasion of Britain. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

404 silver and gold Roman and British coins found in Bunnik (Utrecht) have gone on display in RMO Leiden. The latest Roman coins date from 46-47, Emperor Claudius. 44 gold coins are of Cunobelinus, perhaps taken from Britannia after the first conquests. www.cultureelerfgoed.nl/actueel/nieu...

Very pleased to see this out: the huge Festschrift in honour of Lucia Travaini. Lots of interest here for those interested in all aspects of medieval coinage. libri.unimi.it/index.php/mi...

For #FindsFriday important Carolingian finds from the Loire, including dirhams and an Anglo-Saxon penny which are rarely found in France. They are single finds, not a hoard and were perhaps lost at a ford or river crossing. Two of them are pictured. www.arqueologiamedieval.com/articulos/52...

For #FindsFriday the astonishing (and unique) gold spur from the Viking age found at Rygge in Østfold, Norway, and the two gold mounts found in the same field. Borre style and thought to be from the secnd half of the 10th C. Photos Kulturhistorisk museum/UiO www.khm.uio.no/om/aktuelt/a...

Norwegian archaeologist declares war on Denmark 😂😂 No seriously, he claims that the Jelling stone was erected by a 12th century bishop. But then he’s not actually a runologist (or a Dane) www.forskning.no/arkeologi-hi...

A new book claiming the roots of Scandinavian kingship lay in warrior groups dismissed from the Roman army in the 180s/190s. Knowing Roman institutions and practices, they established centres and grew rich by stimulating production for trade. January price £31,99 www.routledge.com/The-Northern...

Very much looking forward to this! www.ssns.org.uk/events/ssns-...

For #FindsFriday very excited to be rewriting the history of Flanders with two Belgian colleagues in the light of a recent find of a coin of Charlemagne.
