There is no bigger story right now than the White House asserting that California residents are in a state "of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States."

I am writing formally about this and wish the academic publishing process were a bit faster At this rate the USA will be a consolidated dictatorship by the time I get my reviews

I’m old enough to remember when I thought Bill Kristol and I would never ever agree on anything, but here we are, and I’m glad he’s saying it

Absolutely wild that LA has deployed LAPD, DHS has deployed both ICE and CBP, now the white house is calling in the national guard. You'd think the wildest riot in history was going down in LA right now, but it's actually just a bunch of protestors mostly just standing around holding signs.

This is good.

The genealogy of authoritarian practices

I just got a paper copy of my new book! It’s a good day. Even though I’m thrilled about the open access digital version, I guess I’m a bit old fashioned and it feels more real to me somehow to hold it in real life…

I am interviewing shortlisted candidates for a PhD position with me today, and running through questions. Here are some of them: “Why do you want to do a PhD?” “What gives your life meaning?” “Tell me about a time when you were overwhelmed and what you did to manage it.”

"You mourn the lost leverage of the ordinary American-of elections, of courts, of protests, of documentation. You remember when those things seemed to matter, or at least when the powerful felt obligated to pretend they did." @sarahkendzior.bsky.social #TheLastAmericanRoadTrip

I’m very happy to report that the City Collaboratory is alive and well. Here we are learning about the urban development of historical Geneva on one of the tours

Jorge Luis Borges would just love this though.

Dmitrijs Andrejevs and I were happy to contribute a chapter on “the Eastern European Mega-Event Decade” to this new and very topical volume. This chapter explores the diversity, political significance, and legacies of Eastern European countries’ experiences with sports mega-events.

My 2nd book came out today! Together with colleagues and friends, we wrote about mega-events like the Olympics and what they do to cities and societies underneath the intoxicating glow of the spectacle. It's free to read and has some really great work: link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

Happy to see my friend @sdwolfe.bsky.social's amazing book "The Hard Edge of Soft Power: Mega-Events, Geopolitics, and Making Nations Great Again" published. I provided a small contribution on mega-events in #China and the narratives crafted around the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in 2008 and 2022.

Very good point and keen thinking

And a good time was had by all

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

I look forward to reading what you write about this!

It’s incredible that the President of the United States is openly flirting with suspending Habeas Corpus, disappearing people left and right, arresting judges and politicians, accepting ludicrous bribes from foreign countries, and people are still trying to normalize this shit.

HAPPY 75th, NSF! We’re celebrating this milestone by highlighting some of NSF’s most transformative accomplishments—innovations that have shaped our world and continue to drive progress in health, technology, the environment, and beyond. Read on 🧵(1/11):

I sure am tired of countries cannibalizing their best and brightest

The man is divorced from reality, and I say this in my professional capacity

A USAmerican friend told me that she thinks the people are caught between 1) Outrage / Stunned disbelief 2) Depression / Grief 3) Mockery / Laughter at the absurdity of this - THIS - lunatic taking the country over the edge This pic for me fits squarely into Category 3

Belgrade gives a proper metaphor for how I’m feeling about our collective political future

I mean, you couldn’t really ask for a clearer sign of what they’re going for (Also applies to disappearing people, building gulags, attacking universities, weaponizing govt, shredding alliances, etc etc etc)

Hey @julietjfall.bsky.social : have you caught this comics science work yet? It's not geography or even social science but anything academic and comics-oriented obviously makes me think of you and your work! Personally I like how the lab makes comics for every article www.npr.org/2025/04/14/1...

This is still happening in Russia. Also, the USA is on this trajectory too, and further along than you might be comfortable with

This is the most plausible explanation I can think of for the misery he and they inflicted on the world this week. Let’s see what next week brings 🎢

Amen, inshallah, and may g*d grant us all the strength to come together and build a better world out of this catastrophe
