BREAKING Project 2025 leader and current OMB head Russ Vought directs all agencies to create plans for large-scale layoffs ("Reductions in Force") by March 13.

Write and call your representatives. It’s a false narrative that protecting wildlife and people cannot be done at the same time. Save the ESA and the MMPA. 🐳 🐬 🐻 🐺 🐟

My new favorite person. Cheers to Daniel Rohlf from @lclarklaw.bsky.social for being the sole champion of the ESA and MMPA in today’s hearing by the House Commt. on Natural Resources. They stacked the witness list against wildlife and have flat out lied about the data we have regarding right whales

@repdarrensoto.bsky.social Thank you Mr. Soto from my own home state of Florida for speaking up to support park rangers, biologists and dedicated staff in the hearing to weaken the ESA and MMPA. 🐋 🐻 🐢

When do we get to hunt grizzly bears again?- seems like a weird and sick question to hang your hat on to dissolve the ESA and MMPA. Addison McDowell (R) from North Carolina.

Thank you Mr. Magaziner @magaziner.house.gov for speaking up for the scientists who know how best to manage and protect wildlife in the U.S. in the hearing discussing changing the ESA and MMPA.

Watching this and the serious scientific lies started in the first 5 minutes. Shame on them. naturalresources.house.gov/calendar/eve...

And the Endangered Species Act. The summary is full of misleading analysis of threats to NA right whales among other things.

There's been lots of stories about H5N1, but I've yet to see a deep dive into where it came from—which is also the story of how industrial poultry production methods are responsible for turning harmless influenzas into monsters. My latest, for @nautil.us: nautil.us/the-unnatura...

I was feeling really stressed and the “dead shed” needed cleaning and organizing so a friend and I spent 4 hours making it nice and easy to use again. I am still fully stressed and now very tired- but in an organized way.

Yesterday I stood up for myself- twice. Success rate was 50%. But self- satisfaction increased 100% and I got some sleep last night. 🦋

I won’t stop talking about the broken pelicans until they stop breaking pelicans. Met some really awesome people on the front lines of wildlife surveillance and One Health- @Florida Wildlife Rehabilitator Association 🦆🦇🐍🐢🦨🦝

This is a difficult piece to read but incredibly Important.

I'm so excited to share that my first dissertation chapter on SF coyotes is out in the #OpenAccess journal Ecosphere @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social. We DNA metabarcoded and genotyped hundreds of scats to explore dietary variation across the city 🧬💩 🧪 doi.org/10.1002/ecs2...

Thank you @sfgate.com for this wonderful piece on our new study! www.sfgate.com/local/articl...

I was just about to say something similar. To all the artists out there- and in particular, nature-based artists, keep posting. We all need your art. More than ever. 🖼️

"the data we used started in the 1980s and cut out in 2020. This is all from before wind development really got going off the US east coast ... those who choose to blame the decline of North Atlantic right whales on the wind industry are either poorly informed, or else they’re just duplicitous" 🐳🌍🦑

Researcher Vanya Rohwer on how snakeskin aids birds' nesting reproduction: “The cavity nests with snakeskin had a much higher chance of surviving a 14-day incubation period compared to a cavity nest without snakeskin." Snakeskin deters predators taking the eggs! 🧪🌿🪶🦉

This art was a scroll stopper. Isn’t this incredible? 💚

I just finished two small permit reports that have been on my sticky note to-do list for way too long. I can’t explain the mixture of relief and embarrassment that just washed over me. 😵‍💫

Hello friend.

A study combining camera traps and modelling finds that grizzly bears and wolves avoid busy hiking trails. The effect is twice as strong for wolves. 👇 This photo of a elk chased by an off-leash dog speaks for itself. More in The Applied Ecologist: appliedecologistsblog.com/2025/01/23/g...

This is a gut punch.

Lots of people feed animals, and know that it alters their behavior. But since it often makes them do cute things like eat out of our hands, we don't mind! But it alters far more than that. It alters the animals' BODIES. www.sciencenews.org/article/hand...

Terrific article. 🐋

I'm keeping an eye out for this paper's release shortly, I hope it helps archaeologists, museum workers, and others (including myself) when thinking about the care and respect that should surround work with animal remains 🏺🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

It’s that time of year. 🦦 North American river otters are moving around to find mates and getting ready to have pups- leading to an uptick in vehicle strikes. #roadecology

Starting off 2025 with more broken pelicans. #wildlifeforensics

New Year birding- saw 20 sp. of birds. Not among them- the Dusky Seaside Sparrow. They once thrived here but are gone forever. The last of them, “Orange Band”, died in captivity June 17,1987. 🧡

This is pretty awesome.
