The more I think about it the more I'm stuck on this: If your average soldier was caught sharing classified information via Signal group chat, they would be absolutely, catastrophically turbofucked. I'm talking about a court martial, maybe a stint in Leavenworth and dishonorable discharge.

Honestly the biggest problem is not that they accidentally added a random journalist, it's that they were having these conversations on Signal at all. Granted adding a journalist (and not noticing!) is an incredibly huge problem, but it's not the biggest problem.
