First senior-author paper is out today in the Journal of Microscopy! 🧪🔬 We present the first 3D printed microscope where both the optics & frame are entirely 3D printed - a low-cost, accessible, and reproducible tool for histological imaging! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jmi.13398

New paper out 🎇 It has been 13 years since @owenlabuob.bsky.social and co. published a stellar protocol on how to measure membrane order with smart probes! Since then, there has been new dyes, imaging modes and biology! We wrote a protocol for Nature Protocols: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I have a PAID 6 weeks undergraduate summer internship in my lab. You'll use #FRET #biosensors, #confocal #microscopes, and #RaspberryPi to try to discover how low humidity affects leaf development. @sheffieldpps.bsky.social @rmsearlycareer.bsky.social Project 5: www.rms.org.uk/community/ne...

Registration is now open for The Biology and Physics of Prokaryotic Chromosomes meeting in York, UK. 16-19 September 2025

Off to Oxford for Mirjam Kummerlin's viva today, looking forward to fun discussions about some very nice single molecule imaging

I was looking forward to this one! An open source software for fast reconstruction of 3D structured illumination microscopy (SIM) from Xi Peng's lab : www.cell.com/the-innovati... Matlab-based, code here: github.com/Cao-ruijie/F...

Interested in a single molecule bacteriology PhD? Deadline 16th Jan. Location Warwick, UK Broad topic is the physical biology of the bacterial cell wall. Could suit almost any scientific background, eg biology, physics, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science. www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Insightful thread by @erikvannimwegen.bsky.social arguing for nudges in the publishing system instead of blowing it up. What I find curious is how our truly vast publishing ecosystem is stubbornly resistant to any *experimentation*. eLife tries a couple things and gets vilified. What the heck! 1/2

Finally! Who's is next (Germany, looking at you 🧐). www.timeshighereducation.com/news/finland...

My main job in 2024 was assembling teams for several exciting and ambitious projects on bacterial cell wall biology. New lab members and new collaborations. Really happy to see that how collaborative and supportive everyone is. Looking forward to future discoveries!

Really proud of this one. Nothing speaks more true to my sentiments on the value of open source and accessible hardware. Hoping it can be a guide for fellow researchers. Look out for my next collab with @sarraceniamason.bsky.social, hopefully this coming year! pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

www.unige.ch/sciences/chi... Amazing news!!!!! Congratulations @gautamdey.bsky.social and @dudinlab.bsky.social

If there's any other miniature wargaming nerds on here, staff at paint manufacturer Vallejo are on strike. You can support them by boycotting the company until it is resolved www.polygon.com/news/490371/...

It was wonderful to visit COMPARE at University of Birmingham today and meet lots of great membrane biologists and microscopists. Many thanks to Davide Calebiro for hosting!

Is this not the finest lab crafted Christmas tree decoration you’ve ever seen? Courtesy of Amy Tooke!

Crosslinks can sometimes improve AlphaFold3 models. Crosslinking is an experimental method often used as a source of distance restraints in modeling. In AlphaFold3, instead of using restraints, crosslinks can be included as covalent ligands. Thanks to Agnieszka Obarska-Kosinska for the idea.

First attempt in a (loosely defined) Single-Molecule Biophysics starter pack. Please share and (self-) nominate. go.bsky.app/CteFZM5

Posting one of my favorite #organoid images for #microscopymonday. A 100+ day-old skin organoid with emerging hair follicles (ECAD, cyan) and endothelial cells (CD31, red). See: www.nature.com/immersive/d4.... Credit: Jiyoon Lee and Matt Steinhart from our lab. #devbio #stemcells

A complement to @peiferlabunc.bsky.social reposting this image – it was the cover of the 40th anniversary issue of J Neuroscience back in 2021, together with an historical review on imaging the neuronal cytoskeleton with lots of cool pictures: www.jneurosci.org/content/41/1...

I sometimes forget how flexible proteins are. It becomes really apparent when you use NMR states for an animation. That poor cofactor is getting pushed around a lot 😅 #sciart #blender3d #biocatalysis

I head someone explain this as “Good weird is being weird about your own business, bad weird is being weird about other people’s business” and I thought that summed it up pretty well.

We have two open PhD positions in my group at @crg.eu. We are seeking candidates with a background in computational and/or molecular biology, and with a broad interest in evolutionary biology, gene regulation, and comparative genomics. 📅Apply before January 12 here: www.crg.eu/en/content/t...

105 cool microscopists in this starter pack, but I know there are more out there! I want to find more 45 to complete the list, can you help me? 🤓🔬 go.bsky.app/Aaf8sKT

Thank feck for that. It's nice not to have to rub shoulders with fascists and scammers in order to find the latest papers

It is official! The fourth edidtion of our winter school on "Fluorescence markers for advanced microscopy" will take place on March 15-20 2026 in Les Houches, in the french Alps. fluorescenceleshouches.wordpress.com Selection of participants will start in 2025. Signup on the website to be informed.

Bacillus on the Blue place, starting small, but hopefully extending to keep the conversation active [it was also gorwing slow on Twitter] go.bsky.app/BfusVyD

Any more FFS/FCS Folks on bluesky? Where are you? Time to correlate. Please let me know who is on here and needs to be added. go.bsky.app/4BbiZyW

First experience with the eLife experiment - elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre... - constructive, high quality reviews that I will address soon in revision. Everything faster and more informative for readers than it would be if this were behind the scenes at a journal. What’s the drawback exactly?

Seems like its time for a re-introduction. I am a junior faculty at OHSU and a #teamtomo #cryoET enthusiast with a particular interest in membrane reorganization within mammalian cells. I develop the Surface Morphometrics toolkit (and some other bits and bobs).

Shots fired.

Here is a starter pack for CryoEM/ET enthousiasts To be completed go.bsky.app/JmQksC

Is this now happening for real? Are we acknowledging that SciTwitter transitions to BlueSci?!? 🤩 #bluesci #migration

go.bsky.app/KxWyLE4 Trying to put together a starter pack for journals!

We have a new lab website: roylelab.org The lab recently turned 18 years old 😮 and so it was time for a reboot.

The starter pack I made is at the 50/50 limit - I’ve heard many packs were expanded automatically to 150 people, any suggestions on how to make this happen? go.bsky.app/72NeGsT

Yesterday was the JOM, a special day in Swiss schools where students can spend a day with an adult at work to discover a job. I hosted our neighbors 10 yo girl in the lab to show her the job/life of a chemist. The good old trick of fluorophores and a laser beam never gets old, even for me 😊

I posted a while back about @cumsille.bsky.social ‘s lovely GenoVi software, but it really is great and makes lovely publication quality figures- recommend 5*s - GenoVi, an open-source automated circular genome visualizer for bacteria and archaea journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...

Our lab now rocking in bluesky also =)

Incredible graphic - the myriad of ways that bacteria defend themselves against antibiotics. 14 resistance mechanisms, summarised by Idan Yelin & Roy Kishony in Cell www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Since there are more people on here now - can anyone help us with our hunt for a new autoclave? Cheers!

AlphaFold 3 model code and weights are now available from DeepMind github.com/google-deepm...

Making the lab smell delicious today, cooking up some caramel to make interesting sugar substrates with an MSci student! 🍬

For #MicroscopyMonday, here are cells taken at the scope with my daughter last year 🔬 🧪
