Ah, Gill Sands if I’m not mistaken. Happy San Serriffe Day!

Soft Machine co-founder Mike Ratledge has passed away today. He had such a distinctive and inventive voice as a soloist. I count myself lucky to have seen him play several times. A brilliant composer, he was also cool as fuck.

On this day in 1950, George Orwell, journalist, writer, socialist, died in London aged 46. Pictured here with his adopted son Richard. Seventy-five years on, especially in these dark times, essential reading or re-reading (and not just Animal Farm or 1984). RIP Eric. #Orwell

Solidarity, Christine. Welcome!

How terribly droll. I’m very partial to a wry martini at this sentimental time of year.

Vinterhare, Bruno Liljefors, 1917.

Regrets? I’ve had a few . . .

Would it be too absurd to wish you all a happy new year?

Genii - a word I use advisedly.

Something in the way she grooves. Genius.

They asked me how I knew.

Now do you believe in Sanity Clause?

“What's to-day, my fine fellow?” said Scrooge. "To-day!" replied the boy. "Why, CHRISTMAS DAY!”

Even if you don’t read the Guardian/Observer but care about the future of journalism and democracy, you really need to read this excellent thread. Solidarity.

Words fail me.

A Christmas Carol, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1867.

Gosh.

I don't see many long threads on here, but I'll try one - it's about Holbein's Ambassadors, his 1533 masterpiece in the National Gallery. It's often presented as a great mystery, but I think once we understand the circumstances in which it was made, its meaning becomes clearer. 1/

Abso-bloody-lutely!

This cartoon is from 1930. It could have been today.

Perfect!
