What is the endgame is for every website having a paywall? Nobody can afford to subscribe to every website with interesting or informative content, so it doesn't seem sustainable, right? As much as I'd love to give money to every site I want to read, it feels like shooting ourselves in the foot.

Not even suburban. It's all we have for local news in cities as well. There is so little written abouy how Meta has become our go-to local news sources, regardless of where we live, for better (to fill a void) and worse (it isn't actually a news site.)

Not even rural. Lots of small suburban businesses post daily updates about unplanned closures, specials, and other random stuff that get picked up by local FB groups. It’s more reliable sometimes to check FB to see if a place is open than their website or Google Maps.

I think people underestimate how much of rural life happens on FB: businesses, restaurants, entertainment venues etc tend to have FB pages rather than websites. Town FB pages are a wealth of information.
