We like to think of parking reform and single-stair reform as the salt and pepper of infill development. That's why PRN is a proud sponsor of the 2025 National Single Stair Design Competition, which is now accepting submissions! Learn more and register: www.singlestair.com

“Heck, just yesterday we did something with regard to single stairway that people said wouldn’t be able to happen in Austin, Texas." Mayor Kirk Watson on efforts to increase housing options for the city. www.kxan.com/news/housing...

when i talk to local electeds about why development in US cities leads to less space for trees (hint: it's zoning and absurdly deep floor plates) v. other countries - they never really want to hear it. status quo bias is so prevalent. us.images.westend61.de/0000771485pw...

This could be us Denver. Austin joined an elite club today following the lead of NYC, Seattle, Honolulu, Nashville, Memphis, and Jackson (TN) which all allow mid-rise single stair housing.

AUSTIN OFFICIALLY LEGALIZES 5-STORY SINGLE-STAIR APARTMENTS WITH A 10-1 VOTE!!! 🏗️🏬 This makes Austin the 2nd largest city outside of NYC to legalize single-stair apartments! Massive day for Austin and massive thanks to @CMChitoVela for taking the charge on this!

5-story single-stair is now THE LAW OF THE LAND in the city of Austin! Passes 10 to 1! @stephenjacobsmith.com @holz-bau.bsky.social @seanjurs.bsky.social

Not a single time in this article glorifying the need for sprawl to address the US's affordable housing crisis is there a mention of the vast transportation costs of sprawling living patterns. Nor is there mention of the fact that sprawl is directly linked to disinvestment in urban cores.

Austin's city council will vote this week on whether to become Texas first city to adopt single-stair. Its great to see city council and architects working together on missing-middle housing solutions. www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/...

Statewide legislation proposed in North Carolina for: -missing middle to six homes in single family zoning -housing allowed in all zoning types -ADUs by right And the one I’ve been waiting for: SINGLE. STAIR. BUILDINGS.

The 700 person waitlist for these apartments should be a wake up call for state of housing in Colorado denverite.com/2025/03/14/s...

This piece provides a useful view into code reform efforts at the state level. The model code debate isn't any easier, but I note that @stephenjacobsmith.com's proposal G154, which I look forward to supporting, remains alive and will be heard at ICC hearings starting in late April.

This morning, Colorado's 'Smart Stair' Bill has passed out of the House in a 40-25 vote. Next stop, the Senate Housing Committee. leg.colorado.gov/content/hb25... www.cohousedems.com/news/bill-to...

LA's single-stair motion has been adopted! And I very much appreciate these quotes from two moms of young kids on our council. More family-sized housing please!

Austin's Planning Commission just approved six-story single-stair! Hats off to @cityjane.bsky.social and @chris-gannon.bsky.social for their housing advocacy and code reform efforts www.austinmonitor.com/stories/2025...

Great diagrammatic crash course by @lanefab.com explaining the benefits of single stair design.

Homebuilders expect up to $10k in additional costs for single family and thousands more for each apartment from tariffs. www.azcentral.com/story/money/...

Tomorrow is a huge day for Austin housing! City Council will be hearing a local building code amendment to allow single-stair apartment complexes up to six stories tall. Meanwhile, in the Texas House...

Single stair safety session happening right now:

Very ambitious single-stair bill just introduced in the North Carolina Senate – up to 8 stories with 4 units per story, or up to 3 stories with 6 per story (current limit for 3-story bldgs is 6 per story). Bipartisan sponsors from the Asheville metro area www.centerforbuilding.org/trackers

Many nations that allow midrise single-stair apartment buildings have a far better fire safety record than the U.S. The codes promulgated by the #NFPA haven't delivered. The #NFPA should try to learn from nations that achieve better fire safety, instead of attacking those nations' code officials.

NFPA is misguided in making the claim that single-stair egress makes buildings "less safe." What evidence was used to backup the claim that single-stair legislation weakens safety codes? Recent data shows single-stair housing has a strong safety record. www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-a...

Franklin Station in Seattle maximizes the efficiency of what can be built the city's Streamlined Design Review process because it is <12,000 GSF with over 20 units The Eastlake project overlooks downtown & Lake Union: •22 units •5 stories •1 stair •illegal in the IBC

UPDATE: Colorado's single-stair bill passed through committee on a 12-1 vote "By modernizing building codes across our state, we can build housing options that hardworking Coloradans can afford.” - Bill sponsor, Rep. Boesenecker bsky.app/profile/sean...

Colorado firefighter opposes allowing single-stair in the state, says that Europe “frankly has different risk tolerance.” That is true, but not the way he’s implying – their tolerance is lower! www.ctif.org/sites/defaul... (pg. 63)

Next week, BSH researcher Conrad Speckert will be speaking on a panel with @canurb.bsky.social to explore single-stair designs for #middlehousing. Drawing from his research with Nik Luka, Conrad's work has already shaped provincial building codes—and could influence national standards.
