Respect for your principled position on Palestine, @avilewis.bsky.social! *Thank you* your vigorous defence of free expression & academic freedom related to Palestine and Israel.

Almost two decades since Cindy Blackstock and the Assembly of First Nations took the federal government to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal for knowingly underfunding services for 165,000 status First Nations children and youth, Blackstock says kids are still going without needed health supports.

Important upcoming discussion: "Examining the official responses of CDN public and global health education institutions and affiliated student groups to the public health crisis in Palestine." Register: tinyurl.com/436jt4dt Respect for the courageous student organizers 👏❤️

Horrific crimes against humanity are happening in Gaza.

Two interesting graphs from WorkSafeBC's most recent report on injury & fatality claims. First, the long-term (from 1954) decline in the work injury rate (line) & number of injuries (bars). #ohs #canlab

Little has been said about post-secondary education this election. But students themselves are paying attention. thetyee.ca/News/2025/04...

Antisemitism is a problem that must be taken seriously. Unfortunately, tonight’s CBC The National conflates antisemitism w/ criticism of Israel, treats CDN Jews as a politically & ideologically (Zionism) homogeneous group when it is not. And implies that antiwar/pro-Pal. protest are antisemitic 👇

Check out how the anchors of CBS Evening News ended their broadcast tonight:

This paper reports that more than 1000 Canadians died of work-related injuries or occupational disease in 2023, a tragic number that is probably a significant underestimate - since in many cases of disease we don’t even understand the extent of exposures.

2025 Report on Workplace Injury and Fatality Rates in Canada (Tucker, S. & Keefe, A., 2025) Dedicated to those who died because of their work. Report is available here: www.researchgate.net/publication/... #dayofmourning #canlab #ohs #workplacesafety #protecttheliving

Canada utterly failed to act to prevent the Rwandan genocide. It’s reprehensible that we’re failing to act now, and inconceivable that in the future Canada will formally apologize for our inaction in the face of genocide in Gaza, but we probably will. Do better @mark-carney.bsky.social.

"The silence of many church leaders… is too loud.” Palestinian Christian pastor Munther Isaac says this is the second year in which Christians in the occupied West Bank “mark Easter in the shadow of the genocide unfolding in Gaza”. 🔴 LIVE updates: aje.io/pr9u6l

Watching the Leafs/Sens game. The CPC braintrust should immediately pull this ad. 🤦

‘If I die, I want a loud death’: Gaza photojournalist killed by Israeli airstrike

On Wednesday, just days before her wedding, 25-year-old Hassouna was killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit her home in northern Gaza. Ten members of her family, including her pregnant sister, were also killed. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

In 2010, Canada formally apologized for its "inaction" to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. "I think we could have made a difference. I think we could have prevented the magnitude of the horror that brought genocide here." Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean 🧵 cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Dear Prime Minister @mark-carney.bsky.social, What is happening in Gaza demands maximum MORAL COURAGE, a sense of urgency and action. Slogans accomplish nothing.

Dear Prime Minister Carney: You know Israel is intensifying ethnic cleansing & genocide. You know it has blocked humanitarian aid for 49 days, bombed "safe areas" & targeted hospitals. You have seen pictures of dead & traumatized children. What will it take for you to find the moral courage to act?

No lawn sign this federal election. Stop genocide. Stop ethnic cleansing.

Mark Kersten explains why Israel’s recent attack on a hospital in Gaza raises “the presumption of a war crime.” Interview w/ @markkersten.bsky.social starts at 4:10. Worth a listen. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

My piece today. Shout out to @ubyssey.ca for their exhaustive coverage on these protests, encampments, and UBC divestment in general — it features heavily in here.

Wondering what you can do? Students invite community (everyone), alumni, students, staff, faculty to call on UBC to divest from corporations complicit in weapons manufacturing and in enabling illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Please sign! ubcdivest.org/petitions/ub...

Excellent article in the Tyee describing the state of divestment at UBC. thetyee.ca/News/2025/04...

I found some new decoration for my office door

Comprehensive report by @kehyslop.bsky.social on the impact of the BDS movement at UBC. Current state: 'We don't invest in Russian companies because we can't (sanctions).' 🤷 vs. Desired future state: 'We don't invest in Russian companies because it violates our ethical investment principles' 👏

Two months-long student encampments, a student referendum, a two-day student strike and a 12-day student hunger strike have not persuaded UBC’s board of governors to denounce Israel’s military response and divest from the institution’s financial ties to the country. thetyee.ca/News/2025/04...

From Omar El Akkad's new book 'One day, everyone will have always been against this'. On avoidance of the words "occupation" & "genocide" ("words to describe the things they were created to describe"), I couldn't help but think of @mark-carney.bsky.social's denial of what he must know is true.

The Federal Leaders' Debate has wrapped and APTN National News is unpacking what was said. Hosts Dennis Ward and Creeson Agecoutay are joined by Pam Palmater, Cam Holmstrom and Jennifer Laewetz. Watch live:

Petro politics 🙇

As atrocities and the aid blockade continue in #Gaza, hundreds of thousands of people are being repeatedly displaced. Shelters are overcrowded. People are left with nothing. "A message to the whole world," pleads one Palestinian woman: "Open the crossings for us." Watch. 🔽
