My once fractured wrist is now cast-free and feeling (almost) brand new thanks to the NHS Despite being under a lot of pressure, they were brilliant Shame on the Starmer government for pursuing the privatisation and thus destruction of this vital public service

When I trained in medicine I was told that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) was rare. I expected to see a handful of cases in my whole career. Now I have Long Covid related CFS myself, I know of many affected colleagues, & saddest of all, 3 of my kids’ friends. www.livescience.com/health/coron...

Any society where wealth is vastly unevenly distributed is by definition anti-democratic, even if it has the right to vote. One of the many ways to achieve democracy is to smash neo-liberal capitalism in favor of govt provided basic income, healthcare, food, and shelter, and transportation for all.

People in the UK, if you have a problem with the likes of Elon Musk donating £100,000 to the Reform Party, please sign this Parliamentary Petition: Tighten the rules on political donations, and please share it widely petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

They shall henceforth be referred to as swasticars by me too. 😂

Not a single Reform MP has bothered to turn up to today's House of Commons debate on tackling violence against women and girls

Stop framing abolishing fact checking as an embrace of free speech! Fact checking is speech!

It's that time of year again where we share Tom Gill's "Dangers of Shelf Ice" illustration. Please stay off the beaches near the waterline, in fact you may not know where the beach ends and the waterline begins because of the ice and snow.

Good riddance to another troublesome tooth! My teeth are dreadful. I like to blame the 18 months I spent vomiting during two delightful pregnancies, rather than the fact I never remember to floss!

The lengths I am going to to try and improve from Long Covid: There was actual ice at the top of my cold water immersion tub this morning! Thermometer said 1 degree C. I managed 1 minute up to my armpits. Unpleasant but I think it’s helping!

Isn't it time for democratically-elected governments in Europe to take back control of the web from the unaccountable globalisers of the California tech industry? Just a thought.

Came to this late, but it’s a must-read for anyone who wants to continue to live on Earth!

1. Hello everyone, Happy New Year. I’m back from a lovely time, though now stricken by a nasty bug. Right, back to it: In my catch-up reading, there are several articles about the “collapse of democracy”. Was 2024 the year in which it began to die? But NONE of them seeks to define democracy. 🧵

Public Health is Dead was featured in this list of Health and Science podcasts to start your 2025 off right! 🥳 This is a show about how we have f*cked up in public health and, with public health advocates of all kinds, explore how we get out of this mess #episky #medsky thetyee.ca/News/2025/01...

I absolutely love Marina Hyde's writing. It's so acerbic and to the point. We do live in the Muskoverse and quite frankly, it stinks. How low will British politics go? Ask Elon, master of the Muskoverse – he’ll decide | Marina Hyde www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The same country decided that letting very young children get "natural immunity" via infection with SARS-COV2 is a good idea. A lot of cognitive dissonance there, and I wonder if they will reverse course and vaccinate very young children against Covid-19 too.

A few years ago I caved and bought a cheap Robo vacuum. I had resisted for years - scolding myself with gaslighting comments like “your condo is so small - you SHOULD be able to vacuum yourself” I was so mean to myself that I refused an accommodation tool that would help me 🧵

Inset-day yesterday. Seven kids round my table at snack time. Two won’t be back in school today due to chronic post-viral illness, plus me, still off sick with long Covid. It felt nice we weren’t alone, but normalising chronic illness in kids is definitely something I didn’t see coming pre-Covid!

Alone or lonely at Christmas? New to social media? There’s a great tradition with the hashtag #joinin, you just search for it and see lots of friendly messages. Someone has also created a feed here: bsky.app/profile/did:...

In preparation for Christmas this year, Montague has been mining niche subreddits, reading autism studies from the 1950s and watching ABA success stories dredged from the bowels of TikTok. thedailytism.com/racist-sexis...

Definitely.

Funding for primary care should recognise clinical need which is currently not the case. To future proof the NHS this is more important than any reform. @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social @becksfisher.bsky.social & team thank you for articulating brilliantly what we see & feel on the ground in practice

SERIOUS QUESTION: what would it take to remove the gun and health insurance lobbies from existence
