Much enjoyed the launch of @unileiden.bsky.social's Europe Hub in Brussels at @europarl.europa.eu today With great contributions from - and very many thanks to - Leiden colleagues & organizers at the EP's Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) www.europarl.europa.eu/stoa/en/even...

Why does the largest trading bloc on the planet have a miniature-sized currency? With Trump, the EU will again much regret this. 🎈In a new working paper, @steffenmurau.bsky.social and I set out to theorise failure and develop a new IPE perspective that foregrounds offshore money. A thread 🧵

Is the European Central Bank losing its independence by getting too political? Our new open access highlights how the ECB’s increasing involvement in crises and political issues has led to debates about its legitimacy and the need for stronger accountability. Issue: shortt.link/pag386bsky

📊 Last week, we released our new central bank speeches database, which almost doubles the coverage of the @BIS_org database. We also released a tool to facilitate research on central bank communication: meet the #CBSpeeches explorer! Four tools for the price of one (=free!)

Had a really excellent time at @weareceu.bsky.social in Vienna this past Monday discussing @ankehassel.bsky.social's recent research works on the political economy of growth & welfare with some wonderful colleagues. Engaging and thought-provoking exchanges - thanks so much for hosting us!

Back from @weareceu.bsky.social after a wonderful workshop on recent works by @ankehassel.bsky.social in the context of her Karl Polanyi Visiting Professorship, incl. •the much-anticipated 2nd volume of Growth & Welfare with @bpalier.bsky.social •joint work with @donatodc.bsky.social & Martin Höpner

Are you also still baffled by Trump's inauguration 🇺🇸, wondering what he will do next, how successful his policies will be and (frankly) why he is even there? Our new book "Understanding Political Economy: Capitalism, Democracy and Inequality", released today, can help with that! (Link below)

Thank you so much, Sebastian, for your kind and thoughtful comments. It was a great workshop. Congratulations to the Karl Polanyi Society, the university of Vienna and CEU for hosting me! @sebdiessner.bsky.social

Just out 🍃 first research output of a new agenda on the political economy of, and capitalist varieties in, the green transition 🏭👩‍🏭 Born from a joint effort with @donatodc.bsky.social and @ndurazzi.bsky.social 🚀 leap.luiss.it/wp-content/u...

Important work!

How widely (or not) the benefits of new technologies like AI are distributed is a crucial political-economy question. This paper finds evidence that collective wage bargaining helps ensure that the gains are not captured primarily by capital owners and high-skill workers. @wzwysen.bsky.social

with dear friends and brilliant co-authors @sebdiessner.bsky.social and David Hope, we have a new paper soon out in @comppol.bsky.social

Do you lose sleep over the future of the Economic and Monetary Union? Do you know what's wrong with it? Have you any idea how to fix it? Might you have a working paper on the matter? Then we want to hear from you! Submit proposals & come share your ideas for the EUI Schuman Centre EMU Lab!

Not happy this became so timely, but here we are. It's a very sharp piece, underpinned by two (!) new working papers: One tests the 'cost shocks as coordinators' mechanism behind sellers' inflation; the other traces fossil fuel profits to shareholders. We just uploaded both, links below.

This summer, I read Manuela Moschella's new book "Unexpected Revolutionaries", and wrote a short review for Competition and Change. Spoiler alert: it's a *great* book that provides a refreshing account of central banking transformations in the past 15 years journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

As promised (threatened?), I made a starter pack of heterodox and political economists! You'll see a range of pluralist theories here, as well as some heterodox-friendly economists that may be more mainstream. go.bsky.app/J86RtKh

Here is one for the EU central banking geeks around here 🤓💶 :-) bsky.app/profile/did:...

Today the ECB's revised operational framework comes into force 💸 What's a central bank's operational framework for? Why is the ECB's revision far from ideal? How should it be improved? Check out our report with @jordischroeder.bsky.social & Uuree Batsaikhan www.datocms-assets.com/132494/17212...

🚨 New article 📯 In 1999, the ECB realized that its map did not fit the territory. What gives? For a long time, it tried to reshape the territory. With @donatodc.bsky.social & @sebdiessner.bsky.social we trace how & why it went so out of its way. #ipesky #polisky www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

The ICT revolution has fundamentally transformed how we work. Has this had an effect on demand for redistribution? In our latest work in @jeppjournal.bsky.social, David Hope, Nina Weber, and I run interactive online experiments to answer this question. A short thread. 1/6
