A fat bureaucrat once asked, "do you make a living doing art?" "As good of one as did Van Gogh, Gauguin, or Modigliani," replied I. Matt Foley, mafo: Visualator; mysterious maker of sensory variegations; an alchemical distillery of artistic extremes. 11/24

Euonymus (foreground), White Crabapple (behind), both I started from little cuttings. Pink Crabapple (lower right) I planted. I really make Spring look like an Impressionist painting for all, in real life, with all my plantings, perfuming the area with heady, exotic fragrances. Spring is my thing.

He is, by nature, a joker, a witty man with a sense of fun. A comedian, comic, wit, prankster, sometimes a clown. One to lift spirits when one is feeling down. One to bring a smile when one is sporting a frown. Give into a jester's magic when you're feeling down. Matt Foley : "The Joker Is Wilder"

“A joker is a little fool who is different from everyone else. He's not a club, diamond, heart, or spade. He's not an eight or a nine, a king or a jack. He is an outsider." ― Jostein Gaarder “When a joker dies, the joke remains.” ― Mokokoma Mokhonoana #MattFoley : "The #Joker Is Wild" #AprilFool

Not the tragedy of which Tennyson wrote, but a poetic play of words and reference to a lyrical experience, a portrait of a friend that had an Italian restaurant in which culinary delights were served in generous portions, spiced and savoy. "Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art." ― Charlie Parker Blues is the song of your soul. The real, true Deep of being. "Lady Sings the Blues" - #MattFoley - acrylic on canvas, 24"x18"

“You aren’t like them. You’re not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more you feel like an outsider." ― Dr Timothy Leary

At an old zoo built long before I was born was a tiger who'd been given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Humans tended to make it unhappy. Little wonder, the rude creatures gawking. I would visit, come close to the bars so it could lick my face. Perhaps it was the salt of my tears.

Being with kids in class in Singapore remains a favorite adventure. She did me justice with her picture, don't you think? (I can go anywhere people take me.) I made a "color me in" and "cut me out" character that people could make and take me to fun places. I got to spend quality time in Singapore.

One #MattFoley is a fictional character from the comedy program #SaturdayNightLive performed by Chris Farley. Foley is a motivational speaker who exhibits characteristics atypical of anyone in that position. The sketch was popular in its original run and became one of Farley's best-known characters.

Psst. Art should be for everyone. No one should be prohibited having aesthetic experiences. Art is enriching. It is almost a genetic thing: even cave people had paintings on their walls. Little kids learn to write so they can sign their artworks. #Art is a universal language open to all. Be edified.

There are many mysterious forces with faces of mythics from even before those of my own ancestors long gone, reaching back into mythic times where dwelled giants and monsters and magicians. In my dreams, they call to me to join them in the annals of history. A day will come when I will. #MattFoley

I don't need a full fieldhouse. I don't need a stadium audience. I don't need roaring applause. I make #art, scintillating creations of imagination. Documented spiritual odysseys of a wandering soul. Personal existential explorations. For me. Sometimes, I let others look. Like now. #MattFoley #mafo

The daisy follows soft the sun, And when his golden walk is done, Sits shyly at his feet. He, waking, finds the flower near. "Wherefore, marauder, art thou here?" "Because, sir, love is sweet!" ― Emily Dickinson, poet I'm in a truly serious Spring mode. ― #MAFO #MattFoley #Art #Painting #Poem

#Art is where you find it: perhaps only battered and worn, left in the dust of indifference, whereupon, the thoughtful eye may surely resurrect a modicum of a once former glory into some new expression of perseverance, so it can, or may, live and even last once again. #MattFoley #mafo : photo, poem

“While the authority of the doctor or plumber is never questioned, everyone deems himself a good judge and an adequate arbiter of what a work of #art should be and how it should be done. It's therefore a risky and unfeeling act to send it out into the world.” ― Mark Rothko: #artist #MattFoley #mafo

The presence of that lovely daffodil always sure to give a golden thrill, and growing greenthings given birth now thrusting forth from warming earth, for a promise of an impending Spring, is the sign these flowers surely bring. ― Matt Foley (mafo) #Art #Artist #Poem #Poetry #Poet #MattFoley #mafo

Matt Foley: "Little Napoleon" acrylic on canvas, 76 x 61cm Each has that proud little Napoleon inside. Unadmittedly. Yet a secret point of pride. You can run. But, you can't hide. The personal dictator you're forced to abide. A presence that can't be put aside. #Expressionist #Moodist #Art #Artist

Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." ― Harriet Tubman: abolitionist, activist "The experience of being in the presence of something magical is empowering." ― Matt Foley

'In the pink' is from the 16th century, the meaning being 'the very pinnacle of something' but not necessarily limited to health. #Pink being used with that meaning is found in Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, 1597. 'In the pink' was an idiom once cherished by Queen Elizabeth I. Sometimes, drunk. #drum

All #art is quite useless." ― Oscar Wilde “Only through art can we emerge from ourselves and know what another person sees.” ― Marcel Proust

Supreme Irony How many people have, or are, making a decent, comfortable living from Vincent Van Gogh? This is a question I ask myself. Museums and staff, art historians, teachers, writers, critics, print publishers, calendar makers, coffee cup creators, the list goes on. On poor, starving Vincent.

An ultimate irony, confirmed time and again, is when a house burns down, the chimney is all that's left. Fire is certainly a jealous god, when the remnant of an inner shrine is oft the only item deemed worthy of remaining. Prometheus weeps in absentia. Contractors circle like vultures. #MattFoley

"Shall we take the position that, submitting to threat, it is better to surrender pieces of free territory in the hope that this will satisfy the appetite of the aggressor and we shall have peace? “Real is rare, fake is everywhere,” said 49 year-old rapper and actor, Shifty Shellshock, shortly before his death from a drug overdose. “The black sheep, the odd ducks, the rejects, the eccentrics, the loners, the lost and forgotten. More often than not, these people have the most beautiful souls.”

“To evoke in oneself a feeling one has once experienced, and having evoked it in oneself, then by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others may experience the same feeling - this is the activity of #art.” ― Leo Tolstoy #MattFoley

"The process of telling a story has not changed. It's like cavemen sitting around the fire; somebody's going to tell the story. Somebody is drawing on the wall. You're communicating. You're your own student and you're your own teacher, but the process is of the communicating." ― Stanley Kubrick #Art

Colored glass is a gas. A #Chihuly visit photo. So closeup. "I don’t know if something can be too colorful. When asked if I make a living off of making #art, I reveal that I live to make art, and earn a living so I can. Van Gogh, Gauguin, Modigliani, Rembrandt, just to name a few more notables, died impoverished. It's a cold, cruel world for artists. It seems the best are always broke, and often starving.
