What does an earthquake look like beneath your feet? This visualization shows seismic waves in action. We’re studying how such visuals improve public communication after major earthquakes. We'd love your input! Please take our short survey & share: ww3.unipark.de/uc/SIOseismi...

Fun fact: USGS does not, in fact, just study geology. Mission areas include core science (geospatial, mapping), ecosystems (biology, ecology), energy and minerals, natural hazards (earth quakes, volcanology), and water resources. We strictly do science and are completely non-regulatory.

There is sometimes confusion about the difference between earthquake magnitude and intensity. 🧪⚒️ 🧵 Full video - youtu.be/e8X-kZzeqLc?...

Even when you know how magnitudes work and so how big a M9 earthquake would be, it's still hard to fully fathom an event like 1700 Cascadia. The rupture area is just SO huge.

The last great Cascadia subduction zone earthquake occurred 325 years ago today at 9:00 PM local time. How do we know so precisely? Here’s the story. Full video - youtu.be/n6RmprLm3bI?...

“After a wildfire, the hazard to the public is not over,” said Jeremy Lancaster, California’s state geologist. …The two major hazards after a wildfire are flash flooding and post-fire debris flows.” www.nytimes.com/2025/01/16/c...

Despite my crankiness (horror, actually) over the inauguration, I’m going to calm my soul by focusing on things I can actually address. It’s #MisconceptionMonday, and today we’re addressing this one: Is the Cascadia subduction zone overdue for a massive earthquake?

The first of my likely several upcoming livestreams will be today at 4pm PT. I will be giving up-to-the-minute updates on the unfolding "extremely critical" wildfire risk event across SoCal; plus, thoughts on rain next weekend?? #CAwx #CAfire youtube.com/live/ZMV...

NEW: Maps showing estimated building damage from LA fires and latest fire perimeters and evacuation areas, huge thanks to Jamon Van Den Hoek and Corey Scher for the data. Read @grimeslikedimes.bsky.social's account www.ft.com/content/9400...

NEW: Animation showing how the LA fires have spread over the past 7 days. Near hurricane-force winds are expected later today which firefighters fear could fan the devastating wildfires. Read @grimeslikedimes.bsky.social and Myles McCormick's report www.ft.com/content/1304... #dataviz

Is there a link between #ClimateChange & increasing risk/severity of #wildfire in California--including the still-unfolding disaster? Yes. Is climate change the only factor at play? No, of course not. So what's really going on? [Thread] #CAfire #CAwx #LAfires iopscience.iop.org/a...

Insured losses from natural disasters topped $140 billion in 2024, up from $106 billion in 2023, reports Munich Re, the world's largest insurer. “Climate change is taking the gloves off. Hardly any other year has made the consequences of global warming so clear.” www.munichre.com/en/company/m...

Infrared imagery of the Eaton fire burning through the community of Altadena, California via Maxar. Many city blocks and likely hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

🔴⚠️🔥🚱In just 24 hrs the #PalisadesFire has burnt the 75% of the whole Pacific Palisades, extending for more than 6300 Ha,a catastrophic evolution boosted by strong winds and drought conditions in winter. Here the first Sentinel-2 📸 in its early stages, on Jan 7. #climateemergency @katharinehayhoe.com

"Downtown Altadena is on fire. Multiple structures are gone or burning along Lake Ave & Mendocino. What appears to be a bank and an apartment complex is on fire. This is Paradise. This is a warzone. This is bad." - @norcalstormchasing.bsky.social to me over phone

Downtown Pacific Palisades. There are plenty of commercial buildings still standing, but many have been destroyed. Row upon row of homes have been destroyed. #PalisadesFire

Starting again at or around 1:30pm PT today (1/8), I will begin a NEW livestream to discuss the ongoing catastrophic wildfire events in Southern California. The link is different from AM session! #PalisadesFire #EatonFire #CAfire #CAwx youtube.com/live/uRn...

Zeke Lunder w/ The Lookout has good analysis & maps of the Los Angeles fires What awful, awful days for LA folks, communities, landscapes, wildlife, and more 😞 the-lookout.org/2025/01/08/j...

Initial (very early) estimates of 1,000 structures destroyed in Pacific Palisades

Wrote a bit about the Santa Ana winds driving the Palisades fire, as well as the climate change context (with a huge shout-out to @weatherwest.bsky.social and his extremely informative livestreams) 🧪

Eaton Fire reports from LAFD scanner - don't take as gospel but this suggests a big footprint down well past the WUI (wildland urban interface)

2018 Camp Fire currently holds the record for highest insured losses for a US wildfire, at about $12.5B. Approx. $4-5B in uninsured losses, and I've seen some reinsurer estimates as high as $20B total. Given the price of real estate in the places currently burning, I fear we may see a new record.

We maxed out the air quality in Pasadena…

The images coming out of the #PalisadesFire are terrifying. This is a textbook case of a fast fire. Read more about the fast fire threat at earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/15368....

Wondering where these "climate risk" scores come from? Zillow is relying on models from First Street. When my colleagues @bloomberg.com compared FS predictions to another popular option this year, the outcomes were "startlingly different." Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

this is legitimately a big deal. zillow now putting climate risk on their website.

Today marks exactly 20 years since the 2004 magnitude 9.1 great Sumatra earthquake and tsunami, one of the worst disasters of all time. It was the planet's first M9 quake in over 40 years. More than 225,000 lost their lives across 14 different nations, an unprecedented transnational disaster.

Another hard lesson... This 7.3 earthquake in Vanuatu caused partial collapse of the US embassy.  Unclear how many were lost at this point.  A better plan based on knowledge of the building may be to evacuate on first warning if you are on a bottom floor. See: temblor.net/earthquake-i...

No insight into the earthquakes in California from me, but here are some focal mechanism cookies. Most of them are strike slips but some with non-double-couple component 😉

@nicobruneau.bsky.social and I have been scratching our heads with #hurricane Andrew for a while now, and whichever way we look at it, it always seems like a very unlucky occurence. Curious to hear what the industry thinks about likely return period ?

Hello to old and new comers! Thank you for following me. Here is a short intro if you don't know me: I am Lucile Bruhat or seismolucy, I work in Natural Catastrophe risk management at the AXA Group. After a PhD in Geophysics (specialized in earthquake physics) and few years in academia,

Great resource developed by @ruarirhodes.bsky.social for @rmets.bsky.social I've been lucky to explore the world of catastrophe modelling a bit in my research and it's a very cool job option for weather/climate enthusiasts! www.rmets.org/news/atmosph...
