With your background and rstats skills, you should definitly look into catastrophe modeling positions at (re)insurance companies and brokers. Good luck!

If you haven’t read it yet, any discussion of earthquakes in the Pacific NW should probably start with this amazing New Yorker article by Kathryn Schulz, from 2015. It’s a wonderful, and sometimes terrifying read.

I mean, I do expect the losses to be extreme and plausibly record-breaking, but...since when does Accuweather generate actuarial/catastrophe loss estimates? 👀

Sorry I've been gone a while. Indeed we tried in 2017 ish to do a TC intercomparison with both public and private models. Fell apart when the top private vendors pulled out (after we agreed to do everything they wanted to accommodate IP concerns).

That's only for retail, no? There should be a lot of commercial policies in that area as well

This team could be using results from the folks in the same company that do climate-related science 😉. Joke aside, this is a position for asset management, so I would understand that they are looking for someone with a good understanding of investments.

I used to be more active on Twitter, I'll try to post here as well! Usually highlighting interdisciplinary and open research, from geology to climate risk.

I decided to join the NatCat team at AXA where I am in charge of the plateform that collects all property risk and manage group accumulation for all perils. I have always been keen on risk analysis during my years in academia, and now I am lucky to be part of this community.
