🧪⚒️ A M7.3 earthquake recently struck the island nation of Vanuatu, causing significant damage: collapsed buildings, crushed cars, landslides, and a small tsunami. The UN reports that at least six people have been killed. Why did this earthquake occur, and what made it so damaging? Read more:

The cat is (finally) out of the bag...my FIRST CHILDREN'S BOOK! is here! 📚✨ "How the Earth works" (DK Books) takes inquisitive 7-9 year olds on a journey of discovery into the inner workings of our planet, and is now available for pre-order! Links in my profile! #SciArt #geoscience #kidlit

A beautiful waterfall plunging down hundreds of feet from a glacier. I have absolutely no clue how those sheep got on that cliff, but they add a great sense of scale!

🧪⚒️ Sixteen M5-6 earthquakes have rattled the subduction zone offshore the Aleutian Islands in the last day, 3 above M6. What's going on, and what should we expect? Read more on our blog: earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/numerous-m...

Looks like the seismic swaminess offshore the Aleutians isn't over! The USGS just reported a M5.8. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Earthquake Q&A thread 🧵 Q1: Why didn’t this earthquake generate a tsunami? A1: This earthquake moved the ground sideways. Underwater quakes where the ground moves up are the ones that usually generate tsunamis. This video explains. (This is an older video so it sadly doesn’t have captions)

The M7.0 earthquake today is at the triple junction of 3 tectonic plates. It is historically the most seismically active part of California

A M7.0 earthquake occurred today off the coast of Cape Mendocino about 100 km southwest of Ferndale, California. This is in the vicinity of the Mendocino triple junction, which is where the Pacific, North America, and Juan de Fuca/Gorda plates meet.

⚒️🧪 Looks like the Mendocino Triple Junction at it again! At this spot, three tectonic plates come together, and since they're all moving in different directions and at different speeds, there's a lot of activity. This area has M6+ earthquakes more often than anywhere else in California.

The Triple Junction is the most seismically active part of California. Three M6+ earthquakes here since 2021 (2021, 2022, 2024)—all in December. This event appears to be farther offshore, and we will need to wait and see aftershock patterns and ground motions to get a better sense of the event.

A magnitude-6.6 (preliminary estimate) earthquake struck offshore northern California at 10:44 a.m. local time. USGS estimates place the epicenter just west of the Mendocino Triple Junction.

Did you know that there are normally 40-50 volcanoes in an eruptive phase? And at any one time there's typically around 20 volcanoes actually erupting? Like, right now? The amazing Global Volcanism Programme keeps tabs on them in this list. Check it out for #VolcanoMonday! 🌋🧪⚒️🪨

Sometimes when multiple volcanoes appear in the headlines around the same time, people can get freaked out by what they perceive as an abnormal amount of volcanic activity. It's not that eruptions are rare, it's that the average person doesn't hear about most eruptions! Same goes with earthquakes.

🧪⚒️ Another fissure eruption startedon the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland, about half an hour ago (11:15 PM local time). So far, I see no updates from the Icelandic Met Office, local news already has an updating liveblog. I'll post maps of the fissure when I see them. www.ruv.is/frettir/innl...

A las 00:27 (hora local española), comenzaba una nueva erupción volcánica en la península de Reykjanes, en Islandia. Aquí tenéis el momento de inicio de la erupción cortesía de mbl.is.

🧵SALT🧵 It's been snowing in the UK and the road gritters are out in force, begging the question: Have you ever wondered where that grit actually COMES from? The answer is more magical, beautiful and fascinating than you probably realised. 1/14
