I noticed this too that universities and PIs are increasingly trying to exploit their market power, and no one seems to stop them. In other countries non-fulltime PhD and postdoctoral positions are very uncommon, as far as I know.

I don't think this is only a german problem. The fact that juniors have to so extremely rely on advisor(s) for all the important steps in their career is in my view one of the biggest issues in academia.

Academic journals time bipolarity: Before acceptance, every interaction takes months. After acceptance, they need everything from you within 48hours.

The fear among academics and lawyers now talking on the record on just about any topic that involves the federal government or the White House is really extraordinary and worrisome, and getting worse, it seems to me, every week. Dissent by an establishment figures becoming verboten in the US

Elect stupid people, suffer from stupid policies.

What a time to be a young (european) scientist in the last 5 years: covid, budget cuts, hiring freezes, and now a potential wave of US-based scientists searching for a new home.

Elon Musk claims there is massive fraud in Social Security. Our Management Science paper from a 50,000-person field experiment tells a different story: Most underreported wages aren’t fraud—they’re due to complex rules and reporting barriers.

Waking up to a paper acceptance on a sunny Sunday morning makes the coffee taste substantially better. ☕️🎉☀️

Another great cartoon by @chappatte.bsky.social in @letemps.bsky.social

When you think you've hit the bottom, Trump, Vance and co. show you can go lower. 🤮

🧵 Who enters politics? Are politicians different from the general population? In our @jeeanews.bsky.social paper (M. Jokela, @jannetukiainen.bsky.social, Å. von Schoultz), we study Finnish politicians’ cognitive and personality traits using military conscription test data. 📊

As other places, @ethzurich.bsky.social now also focuses on net academic age (years +PhD) when evaluating candidates. This trend penalizes people who graduated from places with short PhDs. Some places make you graduate in 3-4years, while others give you 6-7. Huge difference! ethz.ch/staffnet/en/...

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

The fastest female to sail around the globe without assistance is 🇨🇭. Justine Mettraux made it in 76 days--beating the former record by 11 days. Amazing achievement!!

40 years later, we surely can't say that Zappa was wrong.

Using years after PhD as academic age becomes useless: Some people now do longer undergrad, predocs and stretch their PhDs to 6+ years, but others don't. E.g., why should someone with a 2014 MSc + 2019 PhD be considered “3 years older" than a 2014 MSc who does 2 years predoc & 6 years Phd?

The jackpot of a lottery is 2.6 milions. Probability of winning is 1 in a million. Lottery costs 2. Should you play? Maybe not.. unless you can buy enough tickets! This is exactly what happened this week in 🇨🇭 www.bluewin.ch/en/news/swit...

Tinder’s introduction + sharply & persistently increased sexual activity with no impact on relationship formation + increased inequality in dating outcomes among male but not female students + increased sexual assaults & STDs + improved female students' mental health papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Today is AEA P&P submission deadline day ... ... or, as I like to call it, "economist resume padding day"! Economists with more P&Ps are more likely to list them in a way that is difficult to distinguish from refereed ones (i.e., real AER articles). papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Je confirme.

As universities devote their resources to administrators and bureaucracies, they spend less on research (like most labs, my lab gets no money from my institution's endowment). This is having the untoward effect of driving some terrific scientists away. www.harvardmagazine.com/2025/01/harv...

Who are the #Econsky people to follow? I heard this website is becoming the new place to discuss academic research. Please reach out =)

So who's on #econsky?

🚨New paper in #PsychologicalScience🚨 Can vaccine nationalism be explained by a belief among policymakers that citizens will mistrust leaders who prioritize global needs over domestic protection. Short answer: Yes. Find out more here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Short #Cinema Thread. Movies can differ a lot between the US & EUR. I just rewatched Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue) by Luc Besson, and it's a great example. The movie is about the friendship and rivalry between 2 free divers: Jacques Mayor and Enzo Maiorca. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt1W...

Was thinking about this the other day. I paid upfront for about $10k of professional expenses (experiments, travels, etc..) and am waiting for reimbursement since several months. Quite insane that stuff like this happens.

Do you really find engagement better on #Econsky than on #EconTwitter? I don't see many discussions going here
