“In controlling trans people’s freedom of identity, the establishment is sending a warning shot to all of those who dare to live a life outside of prescribed gender roles and expectations. Freedom for trans people, ultimately, means freedom for everyone.” Freedoms for all of us require solidarity.

A reminder to all you queer folks: keep blossoming. 🌸

The powerful imagine “free speech” as a right where they are free to vilify/harass marginalised people (women, migrants, LGBT folk, etc) while those who endure their abuse are driven to censor themselves or leave the platform to avoid abuse. This isn’t free speech — it’s domination by the powerful.

When I think of my identity-defining pop culture moments, I think back to my childhood love of Sailor Moon. The outfits and transformation sequences shaped my career ambition as a kid to look fabulous while fighting for justice. So it’s been a queer treat to reconnect with Sailor Moon here in Tokyo.

My boyfriend and I have stumbled upon some plum blossoms in Tokyo. It’s the perfect background for spreading some gay joy. 🌸

“We cannot have economic justice without social movements, that we cannot have a functional democracy while workers are exploited and people cannot easily vote or control their own bodies.” We must stop caricaturing “wokeness” and start confronting authoritarian abuses that corrode all communities.

Boyfriend and I have arrived in Tokyo.

“But the push for laws punishing women isn’t going anywhere. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to prosecutions for pregnancy-related conduct … including abortion seekers, who mails or receives abortion drugs or paraphernalia.” We must defend bodily autonomy and resist its criminalisation.

“Muhsin Hendricks became the first imam in the world to come out as gay back in 1996… A long-standing activist who has worked with interfaith communities around the world, he has done independent research on Islam and sexual diversity.” This is so sad. Love to his family and community. RIP, Muhsin.

“Thanks to Donald Trump’s sweeping executive orders attacking ‘gender ideology’ and DEI programs, the word ‘women’ – along with a number of other terms – is quite literally being erased.” The campaign against “gender ideology” is patriarchal, not to mention racist and homo/transphobic, at its core.

Politicians are attacking HIV initiatives. Politicians are trashing marriage equality. Politicians are encouraging homophobia as “free speech.” And yet some gay people will support such politicians because they think trans people are our biggest threats. It’d be funny if it weren’t so painful.

“The fight for LGBTQ+ rights is not just about responding to crises—it’s about building long-term movements that can challenge discriminatory laws, advocate for legal reforms, and create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people.” We must fight for our communities through protest, mutual aid, litigation, etc.

The brazen attacks on data collection and academia are yet more examples of how the US government is seeking to erase trans and non-binary people. Trans lives are being politically caricatured and trashed as “ideology.” We must join with trans and other communities against ongoing state censorship.

Banned from sport. Blocked from medical treatment. Denied legal gender recognition. Erased from historical monuments. Many politicians/media claimed trans folk were erasing others’ rights. Meanwhile, these politicians/media have systematically sought to negate trans existence. It’s sickening.

We like to do law fabulously! 🌈🎓 💖📚

Trans and feminist scholars/scientists have repeatedly warned us about the dangerous consequences of sex policing, including in sport. In addition to the blanket exclusion of trans and intersex women, the invasive bodily testing enables stigma, abuse, and shame for other groups of women too.

People who flee persecution and seek asylum, regardless of whether they arrive by boat or plane, require safety and security. The government should not make it even more difficult for such people to access citizenship. It’s appalling (not to mention unlawful!) to punish refugees for seeking asylum.

“What do you wear to your law academic events?” Me:

The conditions that have made it possible to politically degrade and dehumanise trans people did not just appear when Trump took office. Media outlets like the NYT have been expressing concerns about “too many trans kids” and published pieces treating their health care as a debate. It’s sickening.

Deporting people because they protest genocide is “cancel culture.” Erasing trans people’s gender markers is “cancel culture.” Defunding humanitarian aid is “cancel culture.” Weaponising technology to target political opponents is “cancel culture.” Fascism is the cancel culture we must resist.

This is a devastating indictment of politics at the moment. Denying gender affirming health care for trans youth is lethal. Much like the fight to ensure access to abortion and reproductive health care, access to medical transition is about saving lives. We defend it from ongoing political attacks.

“If there’s one person I wouldn’t want to be the judge of who goes into locker rooms, it would be the man who openly boasted about walking into dressing rooms of underage girls…” The conservative political rhetoric about “protecting women” is just misogyny. And anti-trans politics is anti-feminist.

Congrats to @senthorun.bsky.social and everyone who worked on this - very excited to read it!!

“While there is every reason to be outraged, we cannot let that outrage flood us and stop our minds. For this is a moment to grasp the fascist passions that fuel this shameless grab for authoritarian powers.” Timely words by Judith Butler on how we can confront fascism now with care and solidarity.

“Gay men and transgender people in Tunisia are often arrested based on gender stereotypes, behaviour or physical appearance.” This is chilling news. The policing of LGBTQ people for the “crime” of existing continues. Solidarity with LGBTQ folk in Tunisia who are resisting this state persecution.

Thrilled that our rewritten version of the High Court's Norrie judgment has been published in the exciting 'Queer Judgments' collection! A huge thanks to my co-authors @odettemazel.bsky.social and Dianne Otto and to the editors, Nuno Ferreira, Maria Federica Moscati and @senthorun.bsky.social!

In times of ongoing crisis and systemic injustice, which can overwhelm us, one of the most effective ways we can challenge systems of oppression is by slowing things down. Throw a wrench in the works. Shift gears. As feminists describe it, become a wench in the system by delaying and disrupting it.

Queer Judgments brings together scholars, lawyers, and activists to re-imagine and re-write legal judgments that relate to LGBTQ+ folk. It’s been a labour of love and community. We hope our book energises pursuits for justice! Download a copy here: counterpress.org.uk/publications... #AcademicSky

Thrilled to announce the publication of our new book, Queer Judgments! This collection brings together scholars from around the world to re-imagine and re-write legal judgments that relate to people who experience sexual, gender, and related marginalisation. counterpress.org.uk/publications... 🌈🎓

Patriarchal white supremacy is a system in which we often question the qualifications of racialised folks, women for specific jobs and exclude them from such jobs while preferencing white men “with connections” for those jobs. It’s affirmative action designed to insitutionalise racism and misogyny.

“United States President Donald Trump has said the US will ‘take over’ and ‘own’ Gaza after resettling Palestinians elsewhere under an extraordinary redevelopment plan that he claimed could turn the enclave into ‘the Riviera of the Middle East’.” This further disposesssion is just ethnic cleansing.

A reminder: stay fabulous.

A hostile legal environment that makes trans lives debatable is one we have to refuse. Tolerance of misgendering echoes the legal tolerance afforded to homophobes when they refused to see gay partners or parents as part of a family. Accepting misgendering only serves to institutionalise transphobia.

“Organizing on the scale that our struggles demand means finding common ground with a broad spectrum of people, many of whom we would never otherwise interact with, and building a shared practice of politics in the pursuit of more just outcomes.” Listening and discomfort are key to solidarity work.

“A sequel reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is reportedly in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to return to the titular role and the Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao to direct the pilot episode.” Well, this news is a great birthday present!

Another year older. Another year being unapologetically gay. 🦄✨

This is a great collection, with a few chapters written by contributors to the Queer Judgments Project. Check it out!

Insisting boys must be strong is “gender ideology.” Telling girls to be nurturing is “gender ideology.” Assuming that kids ought to grow up to be heterosexual and get married is “gender ideology.” This gender ideology is everywhere. It just goes unnoticed because society mandates it as “normal.”

“Black History Month means honoring the importance of Black knowledge production and emphasizing the deep and enduring themes of Black life...” Today is the start of Black History Month in the US. We can learn much from Critical Race Theory, especially when it comes to fighting inequalities today.

Sexual violence is an endemic problem, overwhelmingly perpetrated by men against women. Conservative politicians talk about “protecting women” from trans folks or migrants while making it easier for the mostly white male perpetrators to avoid accountability for sexual violence. It’s painfully gross.

“In controlling trans people’s freedom of identity, the establishment is sending a warning shot to all of those who dare to live a life outside of prescribed gender roles and expectations. Freedom for trans people, ultimately, means freedom for everyone.” Freedoms for all of us require solidarity.
